Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings universe will put players in the shoes of Gollum, the ring-chasing Hobbit of the Third Age – so here’s everything we know about the game so far, from gameplay details to platforms and the story trailer. The Lord of The Rings: Gollum looks to explore the twisted tale of Smeagol, a hobbit whose lust for the One Ring takes him on a long and tiresome journey, changing him into a whole new creature. Set well before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring, this stealth adventure will take players on a true tour of the realm. From the misty Elven forests of Mirkwood, to the underbelly of Sauron’s personal fortress Barad-dûr, Gollum will be venturing well beyond the usual locales of Middle-Earth. Contents

Though Lord of The Rings: Gollum previously boasted a release date of Thursday, September 1, 2022, Daedalic and Nacon have delayed the game “by a few months” to allow for more “polishing.” The developer and publisher have yet to share a revised due date but it remains in development for PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch platforms. Shown off at The Game Awards 2021, the first story trailer for Gollum gives players a look inside the warped mind and split personalities of its nefarious titular character. Following on from the trailer release, an FAQ on the game’s Steam page went live on May 21, 2022, with a series of juicy details surrounding the story. “The story of the game largely takes place in parallel to the early chapters of The Lord of the Rings, from Gollum’s time in Mordor, his capture by Sauron and his interrogation by Gandalf.” This was combined with the announcement that everything in-game will become LOTR “canon” with the approval of Middle-earth Enterprises. Staying true to Tolkien’s vision of the character, the game will see Gollum sneaking and deceiving his way through Middle-Earth. The iconic figure “must stay in the shadows,” as he said during the gameplay reveal trailer. This means crawling through bushes, avoiding enemy sight lines, and generally staying out of trouble. Our first look at gameplay revealed a range of both stealth and traversal features. Not only is Gollum an expert climber, but he’s crafty too. More than eager to throw rocks and distract enemies on his path. Daedalic hopes to mix discretion and agility in equal parts throughout the game.
