The beat em’ up turned turn-based RPG series is one of the most unique gaming series out there. Here’s everything we know about the game so far, including the release window, trailer, characters & more. The Yakuza series is well known for its quirky but often insightful look at Japan’s criminal underworld, paired with over-the-top combat and hilarious side activities. This extra layer of silliness is one of the reasons Yakuza has gone on to be an incredibly successful franchise since its debut back in 2005, producing seven mainline titles and numerous spin-offs. Like A Dragon 8 is officially set to release in 2024. Unfortunately, there is no confirmed release date just yet but rest assured the game is on the way as it was officially revealed during the RGG Summit stream at the 2022 Tokyo Games Show. The first look at Like A Dragon 8 was revealed on September 14, 2022. The announcement trailer featured a cinematic of long-standing protagonist Kiryu Kazuma and Like A Dragon’s Ichiban Kasuga – who replaced Kiryu alongside a new supporting cast in the series’ seventh installment. From the brief glimpse shown in the trailer, it looks like both beloved characters will be working together in the eighth game. You can check out the trailer below: Yakuza 8 characters
Alongside Ichiban and Kiryu now being confirmed, fans got a first peek at a handful of characters that will feature in the game earlier this year. MMA fighter Mikuru Asakura uploaded a video of a Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio tour, the developers of the Yakuza games, and a small section of it showed off three characters that players will recognize. On the monitors, you can see Ichiban Kasuga, Koichi Adachi, and Yu Nanba from 2020’s Yakuza: Like a Dragon. While the first trailer for Yakuza 8 didn’t show off any gameplay footage, as this is a sequel to Like a Dragon, we have a good idea of what the gameplay could entail. Yakuza: Like a Dragon was the first game to abandon the real-time beat ’em up action the series is known for in favor of a turn-based approach. While the Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio tour didn’t go into where Yakuza 8 might be set, a follow-up story from Famitsu revealed that the next game will see a “new town” introduced. It’s unclear at this time if this is in addition to Isezaki Ijincho (based on the real Isezakichō district of Yokohama) from Yakuza 7 being expanded on, or if players can look forward to a totally different setting.
