This is a clever way of the show giving Alicent a motive for moving against Princess Rhaenyra after the King dies (although Alicent and Rhaenyra seemed to have a reconciliation moment).  In the novel, The Hand of the King, Otto Hightower, moved to place his grandson Aegon II on the throne and convinces Alicent that she and her children will be murdered by Rhaenyra if they do not. Also, Otto believed that Princess Rhaenyra's husband Daemon would end up being the true ruler if she ascended to the throne. Otto hated Daemon, a feud that lives on throughout the civil war. However, Lord Lyman Beesbury, the Master of Coin, disagreed with denying Alicent her right to the throne. He believed they should honor the dead king's wishes by putting Rhaenyra on the throne. Soon after, an argument broke out about putting a woman on the throne, and also about Daemon's ambitions. In the debate, Beesbury was murdered by Ser Criston Cole. This made Beesbury the first official casualty of the civil war.  The Small Council, who I'll now call the Green Council, tried to hide the death of the king by not reporting it right away. Aegon II, who married his sister Helaena and had three children, Jaehaera, Jaehaerys II, and Maelor, would be the new King. He was crowned in the dragon pit while the realm was unaware of King Viserys I's death. Rhaenyra, who was pregnant and at Dragonstone during this time, was unaware of everything that happened as well. HBO Max The Green Council arrested anyone who may be loyal to Rhaenyra in the capital. Ser Steffon Darklyn of the Kingsguard would steal the crown worn by the now-dead King Viserys I and defect to Dragonstone to side with Rhaenyra. Aegon II was instead crowned with a new crown. When Rhaenyra found out about the treachery of her half-siblings, she gave birth to a stillborn out of agony and pain. She blamed this on the Greens, and swore vengeance. Rhaenyra   is then crowned Queen on Dragonstone with the stolen crown of her father. She also created her own council — the Black Council.  To kick things off, Daemon and his dragon Caraxes flew to Harrenhal, which they took as their base of operations for Queen Rhaenyra. Then Lord Corlys Velaryon, the Master of Ships who is known as the Sea Snake due to his extensive naval experience, blocked off imports to King's Landing by placing a fleet in Blackwater Bay. HBO Max Grand Maester Orwyle was sent by King Aegon II to sue for peace with Queen Rhaenyra around this time. Rhaenyra denied the terms of the treaty. All the while, Queen Rhaenyra's cause gained support across the realm.  Lucerys would travel to Storm's End to try and recruit the Baratheons to his mother Queen Rhaenyra's cause. However, when he got there, he was met by Aemond, who was there doing the same for his brother, King Aegon II. Lord Borros Baratheon refused to let the two Targaryen kids fight there, however, Aemond would follow Lucerys once they left Storm's End.
