Artist Jennie Carr fueled the rage and sorrow she felt about the overturning of Roe and the loss of federal abortion rights into a series of paintings This summer, artist Jennie Carr launched a series of prints, fueled by the rage and sorrow she felt about the overturning of Roe and the loss of federal abortion rights. Now, her pop art prints are available for purchase. The prints range from $30 to $75, and a large portion of the proceeds will be donated back to Ms. magazine to fuel our feminist reporting, rebelling and truth-telling. MsSzaldropped? Can you tell us a little bit about that day and the days that followed?I cried a little. It was a quiet intermittent crying that continued as I began painting. I had been working on a series of women, but the painting I made that morning had a very different mood. It was raw and sad and a little dark with some shame. It just came together and it expressed what I was experiencing. Opinion Wonking Out: Facts, Feelings and Rural PoliticsThe hard-right turn of rural America has become a key factor in our nation’s troubled politics, writes PaulKrugman. paulkrugman “Suits in ivory DC towers profess to understand the needs of rural America.” paulkrugman Paul, you are a social scientist & supposed to be an authority on understanding society & the state, & yet you refer to America as a 'nation', which like an astronomer referring to Earth being stationary at the centre of the universe. paulkrugman Follow BFBT_ for news on spying and terrorism. What’s it like for you for “Terrifier 2″ to be connecting on that level? It’s mind blowing to us.” Below, Carr and I discuss the origins of her artistic inspiration, political motivation and sense of civic duty. Generative art NFTs are created using smart contracts and stored on a blockchain in the form of NFTs. Szal : Where were you when Dobbs dropped? Can you tell us a little bit about that day and the days that followed? Jennie Carr : I was having coffee at home when I heard the news on June 24. That’s the master of horror himself, the true king. Even with the knowledge of the leaked draft of the Supreme Court’s opinion to overturn Roe weeks earlier, I remember feeling stunned and confused … kind of lost and unable to find the words to make sense of what this meant and how it would impact us all … how it felt emotionally and physically. How the LIT Axis Works At a glance, the LIT Axis looks like a basic (albeit very sleek) resistance band set: it comprises four resistance bands (for a load of up to 200 lbs), plus an anchor point and attachable handles and ankle straps. I cried a little. And of course, Fangoria magazine, I grew up reading that as well. Instead, you simply have to devise a series of traits that constitute your NFT, and design one or more variations for each trait. It was a quiet intermittent crying that continued as I began painting. I had been working on a series of women, but the painting I made that morning had a very different mood. This thing has taken on a mind of its own recently, the past week or so, and they just mentioned us on Howard Stern today. It was raw and sad and a little dark with some shame. An example of generative NFT art is Solvency by Ezra Miller. It just came together and it expressed what I was experiencing. It started a little bit with part one though. While you're working out, the Axis can count your reps, show how much resistance you're lifting, record time under tension, and even point out by comparing the movements on your left and right sides. I wanted to share it online but I was a bit hesitant. Traditionally i’ve used my social media to share what I find funny and beautiful—through my photos and paintings.” She had posted a post on Instagram about it. How Are Generative Art NFTs Shaking Up the Art World? The has helped improve the way we create, collect, and interact with digital art, thanks to their accessibility, transparency, and scalability. I’m more ‘peace and love,’ and I’m not trying to get into it with people who have different opinions. But the anguish I felt made me feel like, ‘Oh fuck it, if not now then when? This is the exact moment to express what I’m feeling’—because i thought others would recognize something in it also. He had me on his podcast way back in 2019 and he’s been talking the movie up ever since. The painting, “GOVT PROP USA” was the first of many expressions in an ongoing series. Transparency Because NFTs are stored on a blockchain, anyone can look up the transaction and ownership history of an NFT, making it easy to verify its authenticity. Szal : What does the Equal Rights Amendment mean to you? Carr : To me the subject of equality is less political and purely human and common sense. But recently it’s just taken on a life of its own that we couldn’t even ask for. “Equality of rights under the law, shall not be denied or abridged by the united states or by any state on account of sex.”  It’s pretty simple language and powerfully clear. It’s purely organic too because we didn’t really have a publicity team to do this kind of campaign. Unlike JPEG and PNG files that can become distorted with time, the code of a generative art piece allows the image to be showcased at any size without sacrificing its quality. No state or the nation can deny personal freedoms based upon gender. Period. And it’s just captured media’s attention now and now everybody else is talking about it. Equality for all! Szal : What do you think is the role of art in resistance movements? Carr : Art—whether it’s visual art, spoken word, music, comedy—is a way to shine a light on the darknesses that creep up on us in society. As the NFT art market continues to evolve, so will the generative art medium. Art can help people feel a full range of emotions and hopefully leads to a questioning of why you feel those things and how the feelings and thoughts shift and work with each other. There’s a lot of creativity in horror right now, from the recent hit “Barbarian” to what you all are doing with the “Terrifier” series. I like to incorporate humor whenever possible in my art and my life. I appreciate how art can open minds and can be a bridge between us. They’re all playing it way too safe. I guess art can push people further apart also, but it is meant to express and expose raw truth. I think art gives us hope by showing us what is beautiful and what isn’t and what’s still possible. Because the people making these films are actually the fans of the genre. Mostly though, art allows people to feel. Szal : Is there anything in particular you’d like Ms . So I think that’s kind of what’s going on right now. readers to know or do? Carr : I want to thank all of the Ms. readers, especially the longtime Ms. That’s for sure. readers who continue to work for peace and equality for all. It’s sad to think of how long so many people have had to fight for women to attain equality. We took that a starting point. The heartbreak they must feel to see the overturning of Roe almost 50 years later. Thank you, for not giving up. Because we don’t want to let the fans down, especially since they practically funded the whole entire film, so we definitely intend to do crazier with things. None of us can afford to be afraid to speak up for equality. I’m really enjoying the wide audience this new series is reaching. It’s just basically blood splatter. Keep a sense of humor and don’t lose sight of the beauty of the world. Be kind because now, as much as ever, we all need to support one another. We’re just getting started on this kill.  To see more of my work, follow me on my instagram accounts: @ .
