I grew up in Iran, as the Islamic Republic and its interpretation of Islam took hold of Iranians’ daily lives. I witnessed how women in my extended family were forced to wear the veil. Many were teachers, some were government employees, and a few had their own businesses. Most were observant Muslims who fasted during Ramadan and prayed regularly. They did not believe in hijab.
