UNT ground game After setting a school record with 475 rushing yards in last week’s win against Louisiana Tech, North Texas ranks sixth nationally with 251. I love a lot of those guys. My brothers were just as destroyed as I was. We were all just crushed. He ranks sixth in the FBS with 328. But I'm going to get Charlie back one day. Q: Any unusual home visits or places you traveled for recruiting? A: Here, recruiting has been so weird. “As long as we’ve got him back there,” Traylor said, “we have a real chance. Our first year was COVID, and even for a while, we still had COVID restrictions. Most of my recruiting stuff, when you’re a head coach, it’s basically by phone. Cooling UNT The Mean Green have won eight straight C-USA games dating to last season, taking all three of this year’s matchups by at least 17 points. I hate to fly, believe it or not. Charlie was a great recruiter. You want one that’s going the other way,” Traylor said. He loved to recruit. And so, in one day, we went up and down eight times. They’ve got good players, and they’re coached well, and they have a tradition of winning. We saw eight kids in one day. We went everywhere from Liberty-Eylau, to New Orleans, to Atlanta, to Florida, on a private jet, in one day.” greg. It was the longest day of my life. And because I was known as a great recruiter, he had me with him. He wore me out, now. I know every coach in Texas, so, he used me for that. That would probably be my craziest day. I couldn’t believe we went up and down that many times. I prayed every time, because I hate to fly. But I love Charlie. I still do. Q: Now in your role as a head coach, how do you determine who you go visit yourself versus which recruiting trips should be handled by assistants? A: A lot of that depends on, obviously the head coach is important in all of them, but it depends on the relationship the assistant has with that kid and how important I really am, versus the other ones. So, I can’t mention the kid right now, but there are a couple of them right now that I've known them or their parents forever, that they don’t need to see me. And it doesn’t matter what head coach comes in, it doesn’t matter which school comes in, they’re not going to betray me or us. So, I'll say to them, ‘Look, I'll come to your school if it really makes that big of a deal. I'll come there. But, if you don’t make me, I can go to this one and get you a better player on your team. ’ That’s kind of how that goes. Q: You have assistant coaches take responsibility for different areas of the state, right? How does that get broken down? A: Just who they know and where they’re familiar. Relationships. Q: Why break it down that way rather than having each assistant handle their own position group? A: We do that, too. We do both. We area recruit, and we position recruit, as well. It's a tough task, because the area coaches have to make sure they’re doing a great job with relationships with all of those high school coaches, and identify the talent in the area, and start the recruiting process to get the information back to the position coach. Then they come in, and it’s basically a tag team between the position coach, the area coach, and the head coach. Q: Has anybody on the staff jumped out as a great recruiter? A: We staff recruit a ton. And each guy is responsible for their own room. So they have an area, and they position recruit. It’s really pretty simple. Whose room is the deepest? Whose room produces the most? It’s not that complicated of a formula to figure out. greg.luca@express-news. net .
