Thomas Jane: Well, I was sent the script, and I believe Asher the director is related to someone I worked with named Josh on comic books, and it was him who called me up and said "Hey, you're being sent a script, why don't you check it out?" I did, and that was how I met Asher, and I loved the Midnight Movie feel. It had a bit of a cult movie feel to it, and the tone that we were trying to hit was a little bit self-aware but not too self-aware, and trying to have some fun with those kind of movies that I used to go see when I was in my 20s. The last Fire Drill Fridays protest took place on Jan. Rocky Horror [Picture Show] is the obvious example where you line up and go see some Midnight Movie, and the '80s and '90s had all kinds of crazy, weird horror movies coming out. I really enjoyed that tone that we had a chance to hit and have some fun with it, and I liked the commentary on what we're doing with ourselves on this planet right now, this post-pandemic strange world that we're living in right now. Because it was such a small brand and so new, I worked on all aspects of the business — product development, marketing, Christmas, promotions. So we got to play with that too. Was Slayers filmed during the early days of the pandemic? Did that impact the making of the film significantly? Thomas Jane: We were right in the damn middle of it, and before the vaccine had come out, and I don't even know if they were talking about a vaccine seriously at the time that we shot the movie. The witness also partially rebutted Cohen’s insistence that she had conversations with her cousin and others about the rape after being asked by the LAPD not to do so. So, the fact that there's a vampire vaccine in the film and there's a lot of layers lined up either consciously or unconsciously with the world that we're living in today. Everybody had a mask on, I didn't know what anybody looked like until the end of the movie! It's a weird experience to know people like when you're working with them on a daily basis. That's an odd experience, but happy to be out of the house. After the return from the lunch break earlier in the afternoon, Cohen trained his continuing cross on possible inconsistencies in Jen B’s discussions with the police over the years and her time on the stand over the past few days. I know the company very well and the business side, but now I’m leading enterprise marketing and data and analytics, I brought in people who are really experienced there. Everybody was happy to be there doing what they love to do, and we were fortunate that we got to make it. How was making the film different from other movies you've made previously? Thomas Jane: I think it's all about the tone that you're trying to hit. I had the opportunity to take a character and sort of say whatever the hell is on his mind. “Inadvertently,” she replied. I think that was really attractive because in this world today, it's getting harder and harder to speak your mind and just say how you feel. Everybody is just kind of watching their back, and that is odd.L. I think young people don't really understand how odd that is, because they're still growing up in a way, but in America, one of the tenets is freedom of speech. Cutioned again by the judge in his questions about Jen B’s talks with certain LAPD officers on the rapes by Masterson, Cohen pivoted to have the witness determine if she was more concerned about injuries to her throat from alleged chocking by the actor during the “interaction” or harm to her hand from the bedside drawer. That's something that cannot be messed with, and the fact that we're being messed with in that way is really strange, and I think the job of art, movies, entertainment is first of all to entertain, but then to also hook us into what's going on right now. If you hook into how people are feeling and what they're going through now, then that's always an added plus. And we've got Elliot Jones, he'll just say whatever the hell he wants, he doesn't give a s--t, he's not on social media, and he has no idea what these kids are doing with these glass things in their hands, so it was liberating, I guess you could say. Cohen did place photos of the witness in a bikini in Florida soon after the alleged 2003 assault on the monitor to erode claims that Jen B was covered in bruises from the incident with Masterson. Slayers also has a theme of social media and online influencers as a parallel to vampirism.L. Is that something that really drew you to the film? Thomas Jane: Well, like I said, it's a fun way and sort of a safe way of stepping outside the box, taking a step back, and being able to look at ourselves in a way that has some honesty and some humor. If we can't laugh, then we're all gonna turn into Communists, and you know, name a good Russian comedy! What were some of your favorite moments or scenes in Slayers to tackle? Thomas Jane: Well, when you're making a movie, every day is different. After the jury had left the room for the last break of the day, Cohen said he didn’t believe such “shocking” photos existed. You never know what you're going to run into. I really liked working with my co-stars Kara [Hayward], I really had a blast with her. She didn't take any s--t, you gave her some s--t, she'd hand it right back, and it becomes play when you find an actor who's really good like she is. B. A. So, that made it a lot of fun, and then the beard. When I first read the script, I was like 'This guy's gotta have a big, giant, three, four-year old beard that he hasn't combed or groomed and there might still be pieces of dinner left in there somewhere', and that sort of was the launching pad to create the character of Elliot Jones. Were there any big challenges or setbacks you encountered in making Slayers during the height of COVID? Thomas Jane: Well, making movies during COVID, it's a pain in the a--! Everybody's got a little zone that you've got to hang out in, you've got masks on, gloves and face-shields, so it's little bit like trying to make a movie on the moon. On the topic of bruising or other injuries she may have endured from the alleged rape, Jen B was tripped up briefly over whether she saw a doctor in Florida while vacationing with her family, or in her home state of California. That brings its own challenges, it can slow things down a little bit, but we didn't let it stop us. Like I said, we're just happy to be out of the darn house.L. What would you say was your favorite aspect of Elliot's role in Slayers and how it deals with the themes of vampirism on different levels? Thomas Jane: Well, you get to inject a sense of humor into something. UPDATED, 12:34 PM with more details: “It was pressure and squeeze,” Jane Doe #1 said Thursday under cross-examination in the second full day of testimony in the Danny Masterson rape trial, regarding what occurred in an alleged sexual assault by the actor in April 2003. Horror-comedies are kind of hard and they're few and far between, and hitting that balance is always a challenge, but finding the material that actually gives you the space to do something that mixes those elements, these things don't come around too often. When they do, people really enjoy them. We premiered at Scream Fest in Hollywood and the audience loved it, and it hits a lot of notes for these horror kids. “I don’t recall if I used ‘strangled,’ ” Jane Doe #1/Jen B said of the supposed second rape by Masterson and the way she referred to it in a later interview with the LAPD.
