Guillermo del Toro is sharing his inspirations behind 'Cabinet of Curiosities.' The anthology series kicks off on October 25 on Netflix The monster master revealed that since reading his very first horror book, which happened to be an anthology series, it’s been a lifelong goal of his to see that same style play out on the small screen. “I wanted to do an anthology that harvested some of the best that I’ve read, and a few new ideas that I want to write,” del Toro said, adding that he has a soft spot for “writing short stories.” The upcoming project will see two of del Toro’s musings come to life, with others penned by folks including comic book author Emily Carroll, Mandy co-writers Panos Cosmatos and Aaron Stewart-Ahn, and, of course, H.P. Lovecraft, because what horror series would be complete without a tale inspired by or straight from the writings of the legendary Lovecraft? Read more:

The Academy Award-winning director recently sat down with Netflix alongside fellow horror crafter, Mike Flanagan, with both talking about their 2022 spooky season projects. Excited to give his fans a look behind the stories yet to be told, del Toro opened up about what led him to create the four night event and his inspiration surrounding the two tales that he penned. Featuring eight composers across eight separate episodes along with two more providing the show's theme and other tracks, each brings their own style to the table to make the series as a whole sound as terrifying as it looks. Now fans have been treated to perhaps one of the most anticipated of del Toro’s on-screen stories - an adaptation of H. “I wanted to do an anthology that harvested some of the best that I’ve read, and a few new ideas that I want to write,” del Toro said, adding that he has a soft spot for “writing short stories. With various string instruments going, it beckons viewers to open the cabinet and look at what's inside.” The upcoming project will see two of del Toro’s musings come to life, with others penned by folks including comic book author Emily Carroll, Mandy co-writers Panos Cosmatos and Aaron Stewart-Ahn, and, of course, H. In practical terms, the “Cabinet” really contains eight one-hour films, with settings including rustic 1909 Massachusetts (“Pickman’s Model,” directed by Keith Thomas) and a late-1970s version of future shock (“The Viewing,” Cosmatos). P. Their various tracks run the gamut from the chilling, plonky "Surveillance Video" from Davies to the tense, ambient tones of Luppi's "The Lotion Lady" and even the synth-rock epic "The Viewing Suite" from Lopatin.” COLLIDER VIDEO OF THE DAY The chilling poster has an old-timey feel with a painted picture of a man inside a golden frame. COLLIDER VIDEO OF THE DAY Del Toro’s collections act as bookends to the multi-night event, with “Lot 36” kicking things off on October 25, and “The Murmuring” drawing it to a close on October 28. Both original ideas from the The Shape of Water director, the former was born out of the thought of someone obtaining a storage unit that holds dark and dangerous secrets. COLLIDER VIDEO OF THE DAY Closing out the soundtrack is a cover of Lydia Mendoza's "Mal Hombre" courtesy of Guatemalan singer-songwriter Gaby Moreno. Speaking about his own storage mishap, del Toro recalls, “They sent the mail to the wrong address, and they sold all my storage to somebody. The original story centers around two men, one being the titular Richard Upton Pickman and the other known only as the narrator. It had all my storyboards and it took a while to recuperate. RELATED: Unlock Guillermo del Toro's Mind in New 'Cabinet of Curiosities' Poster Finding different composers for each episode aligns with del Toro's process behind making Cabinet of Curiosities.” Multiple cinematographers and editors worked on the series, but there was only one industrious production designer, the del Toro regular Tamara Deverell (“Nightmare Alley,” “The Strain”), who embraced the task of designing everything, such as a giant animatronic rat (for “The Graveyard Rats,” Vincenzo Natali) and a sketchy storage facility (for “Lot 36,” Guillermo Navarro). ” A nightmare indeed, but it eventually led del Toro to dream up the plot for “Lot 36” which was then adapted for the screen by Regina Corrado (Deadwood). Bringing another familiar name in to direct, del Toro recruited Guillermo Navarro (Pan’s Labyrinth) and cast Tim Blake Nelson (Watchmen) in the episode’s leading role. Individual stories will cover all shades of horror, ranging from the classically creepy tales to the more grotesque or downright Lovecraftian. Chilling revelations lie around every corner as the story delicately walks the line of what’s real and what’s an illusion. What if they were forming patterns because they carry the souls of the dead?’” Bringing another clever mind in on this installment, the Crimson Peak director asked The Babadook’s Jennifer Kent to stand at the helm of the episode. “She made it a story about healing, and I was blown away,” del Toro recalls, surrounding a move that Kent made that he “didn’t see coming. On board for the series is a star-studded cast featuring F.” The final episode of the anthology collection will star Essie Davis (Babadook), Andrew Lincoln (The Walking Dead), and Hannah Galway (Under the Banner of Heaven). Curve writer Lee Patterson adapted Lovecraft’s original story for its Netflix makeover. “He understands space and things like ceiling heights and square footage and the shapes of things in a way that a lot of directors don’t,” Deverell said. And, there’s even more chilling tales where that came from! Created, written, and executive produced by del Toro, it'll see him reunite with a few previous collaborators like The Shape of Water's David Hewlett and Pan's Labyrinth's Guillermo Navarro as well as join forces with other creatives including Mandy's Panos Cosmatos, The Babadook's Jennifer Kent, and The Empty Man's David Prior among many others.
