Therefore, don't try and reinvent the wheel when it comes to addressing an obvious storyline for a particular NFL matchup. So, if a middle-of-the-road running back is squaring off against a generous defense -- let's just say the Detroit Lions, for example -- do not hesitate to put that player in your starting lineup.. With that in mind, Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott (and RB Tony Pollard) vs. Lions People are also reading… While Elliott hasn't done much feasting on opposing defenses this season, he is coming off a 13-carry, 81-yard performance with a touchdown in the Cowboys' 26-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles last Sunday. Detroit ranks 28th against the run. Pollard is averaging 5.3 yards per carry and faces a Lions defense that has also allowed 10 rushing touchdowns this season. Detroit must contend with the return of Dak Prescott from a season-opening thumb injury. Dallas might lead with the run, but is expected to open up its offense after keeping it close to the vest with Cooper Rush. Verdict: Start Cleveland Browns RB Kareem Hunt vs. Baltimore RavensSure, you drafted Hunt with the caveat that if anything happened to Nick Chubb, you'd have a Top 5 running back on your hands. Well, the only thing happening with Chubb is he's leading the NFL in rushing yards (649) and rushing touchdowns (7) this season. Hunt also isn't doing much in the passing game with offseason acquisition Amari Cooper, fellow wideout Donovan Peoples-Jones and tight end David Njoku carrying the load on a run-first team. Let's face facts: The draft-day gamble didn't pay off. Hunt deserves a seat on the bench. Verdict: Sit Denver Broncos QB Russell Wilson vs. New York JetsWilson admittedly looked good to start last week's game against the Los Angeles Chargers ... then he played the second half. The high-priced offseason acquisition has provided little bang for the buck this season, and now he's also dealing with a hamstring injury that pretty much nullifies any semblance of a ground game. The Jets feature a better-than-expected secondary and should have little issue silencing a Broncos offense that has mustered a league-worst 15.2 points per game. Verdict: Sit Indianapolis Colts WR Alec Pierce vs. Tennessee TitansWhether you selected Pierce with a late-round draft pick or took him off waivers, the rookie should pay dividends in Sunday's matchup versus the Titans. Pierce has proven to be a consistent threat behind Colts No. 1 wideout Michael Pittman Jr. and faces a Tennessee defense that has more holes than Swiss cheese. Pierce also will benefit from the Colts likely lightening the workload of star running back Jonathan Taylor, who is working his way back from an ankle injury. Verdict: Start Jacksonville Jaguars TE Evan Engram vs. New York GiantsEngram has 11 receptions on 16 targets in his last two games after being limited to just one catch in each of his previous two contests. On Sunday, Engram will face a Giants team that pretty much gave up on him just a few years after selecting him with a first-round pick. Is that enough motivation for you? Just temper your expectations given that Engram has yet to find the end zone this season. Verdict: Start Waiver wireThe waiver wire seemed particularly barren at an unfortunate time given teams will be without their representatives on high-powered teams such as the Eagles (Jalen Hurts, A.J. Brown) and Buffalo Bills (Josh Allen, Stefon Diggs) as well as the Minnesota Vikings (Justin Jefferson) and Los Angeles Rams (Cooper Kupp). Ravens running back Kenyan Drake serves as the highest upside waiver-wire option this week after he rushed for 119 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries in Week 6. J.K. Dobbins' ailing knee is worth monitoring. Colts quarterback Matt Ryan could be worth a waiver-wire addition given the matchup (see Pierce, above). The 37-year-old recorded season-high totals in completions (42), attempts (58), passing yards (389) and touchdowns (three) in a 34-27 win over the Jaguars last week. Gambling problem? There is help.
