"You wouldn't believe the costs that come with dealing with cancer, and it's not just the medical bills. It's daily living. CHICAGO (WLS) -- "Embrace Emily" is an organization helping local women suffering from breast cancer. Those women are faced with a devastating diagnosis, and oftentimes, deep financial burdens. "It has a pump, a tank of water and has a hose,” said retired firefighter Marshall Moneymaker. "You wouldn't believe the costs that come with dealing with cancer, and it's not just the medical bills. That survey by Orlando Health also found that 22% of women ages 35 to 44 have never gotten a mammogram and have no plans of getting one. It's daily living. I've driven her on a few calls. "The beauty of the story is, it actually served in the same station that I did,” he said of the truck. In fact, breast cancer has a more than 90% survival rate when it’s caught early. Emily Klaus fought hard, but ultimately lost her battle in 2017. The following year, Embrace Emily became an official nonprofit." The bright pink fire truck now serves with Moneymaker on a new mission – raising awareness of breast cancer as"The Pink Fireman. "We decided as a group - all of her good friends - that we would keep Embrace Emily going on her behalf because that's what she would want us to do," Noonan said. So, Emily's friends keep fighting. "While I was on the job, I lost three of my seven sisters to breast cancer," he said."I've seen the ugly side of social media and this has been a beautiful side. In her absence, they've become allies to other women across the Chicago area, hosting fundraisers and putting donations to use in assisting breast cancer patients and their families, financially. "I'm a single mom, so I'm used to having two jobs. "I didn't know I was dealing with mental issues or processing things until a breast cancer walk set up a pit stop in our firehouse," Moneymaker said. I'm in full control. I take care of everything. I went to Walmart and found the funniest pink pajamas I could find and, you know, just put an ensemble together, so to speak. I live on my own."Just because you're young and healthy, it doesn't matter. I'm used to the control. "Me getting my own fire truck – I like to think that's the sisters involved, you know?" Moneymaker said. And when I got diagnosed, for the first time in my life, I'm not in control. That really terrified me," said Diana Vargas, a breast cancer patient. "I love this truck! I love this truck! I am so proud of this truck because this truck is more than just a truck,” Shannon Moneymaker said. Vargas underwent a double mastectomy after being diagnosed earlier this year. RELATED She's currently in treatment at Loyola University Medical Center." Their foundation helps those with breast cancer facing financial hardships. Margaret Thompson, a doctor in breast services at Cleveland Clinic Florida,. That's where she heard about Embrace Emily and reached out to the organization for help At this pas summer's annual fundraiser, she received a $6,000 check. "I thought, 'This is it. For them, October is go time. This is the hope I've been waiting for.' And it was a game-changer after that," Vargas said. That means they travel to numerous outreach events - with their Golden Retriever ambassador, Hope -- and let people know they can help. "This means that now, I'm able to get treatment. I'm able to not work two jobs. "I was treated for breast cancer like seven years ago, almost eight now," Davenport said." Grant recipients like Diana use that money to offset costs that medical insurance doesn't cover. That includes things like food in the fridge, rent or mortgage payments, or even rides to chemo and radiation treatments." The work also includes making sure kids aren't forgotten, either. They are things that are equally life-sustaining. "We share Emily's story with all of the women that we help.
