Ky recently published Love & Justice , a book that documents the evolution of her work, accompanied by personal essays. “We examined various conditions, including growth factors, activators and inhibitors of signalling pathways and essential culture medium components,” says Fukuda. In an as-told-to interview with associate features director Dianna Mazzone, Ky shares her personal hair journey and the inspiration behind her advocacy. It was that project that convinced Hovey to switch from hand drawings to an entirely digital production process. I was born on the Ivory Coast, in the city of Abidjan. “If you think of a hair follicle, it’s got the hair down the middle of it and then it’s got layers of epithelial cells around the follicle and other specialised cells,” says Hodivala-Dilke. [West Africa is] still deeply impacted by colonization, even though we're independent now. But to put it in terms its chef male lead, Lino (Eugenio Mastrandrea), might understand, it could’ve used a little more acid or salt to balance all that sweetness. Growing up, the I had were all white and had straight hair. The hair follicles grew for up to one month, reaching up to 3 millimetres long. “Having an analog part of the process is time consuming,” he explained. I would remove it and buy extensions at the markets and sew them in. I first got my hair relaxed when I was five years old; it was the norm. The team is now working to recreate the experiment using human cells. When I went into middle school, I was forced to shave my head completely. “Zooming in to 300 or 400 percent to erase all the little ink splatters that came off the end of my pen, that drove me a little bit nuts,” Hovey recalled. In a lot of public schools here, it's believed that if girls let their hair grow, they will be too attractive and the boys will not focus. “You might be able to take hair from someone whose hair is really lush and make it grow in the lab and then use those follicles to do a transplant,” she says. My high school was private, so I was allowed to let my hair grow — and I was back to relaxing it again. After I got my high school degree, I went to school for business management. “This discovery is not going to cure hair loss, but it lays the foundation for somebody to potentially do so,” says Hodivala-Dilke. “So I took a lot of time to create a pen in Photoshop that pretty much exactly replicated the one I used in real life,” Hovey said. But three years in, I told my mom I couldn't continue. Ky serves as artist, model, and photographer for her sculptural work. Courtesy of Laetitia Ky I didn't know exactly what I wanted to do, I just knew that I wanted to create. A planned bake by Kim-Joy Hewlett for The Great British Bake-Off . She told me to take a year off to think about it, that she would support me. That year, I spent a lot of time scrolling the internet and observed a lot of people making careers [online]. It was a very important year, because I realized I could also do that. And because eight months of the year is very much about drawing cakes, I look for anything and everything different just to keep a level of sanity,” Hovey said. I just didn't know what kind of content I would create. [A few years earlier], I discovered American natural hair communities on YouTube when I was looking for ways to make my hair — which was extremely weak from relaxing — grow again. I was following a lot of accounts promoting the beauty of Black hair.S. Around the time when I was thinking about what content I could make, one of those accounts shared a photo album of women in West Africa in the precolonial era. I was completely blown away by their hairstyles. They were like sculptures: huge, abstract, geometrical.) But no matter what variety of show it is, or what the challenge is, Hovey’s task is always the same. I felt [inspired] to do some experimentation. I made a long, braided extension, like a straight line on top of my head. I posted it and my friends and family were completely impressed.” A planned bake by Selasi Gbormittah for The Great British Bake-Off . That's when I thought maybe this was something I could do. To manipulate hair into shapes, Ky wraps hair extensions over wire. Courtesy of Laetitia Ky . In more recent seasons, the production team has also instructed bakers to take photographs of their work while practicing at home, so Hovey can get a better sense of their planned vision even if it isn’t successfully realized in the tent.
