Power Is Shifting To The States Women Running For Governor Are Looking To Grab It The number of female governors may finally hit double digits after the upcoming midterm election. Women are not just vying for the top job—they’re also positioning themselves as the best leaders to make decisions about hot-button issues such as abortion, voting rights and others. For those keeping score, Oregon’s Kate Brown is the only woman incumbent governor currently on her way out. The Democrat first assumed the governorship in 2015 following the resignation of John Kitzhaber. Now due to state term limits, her seat is open. With three women at the top of the ballot, Democrat Tina Kotek, Republican Christine Drazan and Independent Betsy Johnson, the state will almost certainly be sending another woman to the job. Along with Oregon, Alabama, Arizona, Iowa and Michigan are likewise all but assured to see a woman governor, with the nominees for both leading parties being women. This marks amajor pickupof all-woman gubernatorial races as, prior to the 2022 midterms, the U.S. had only ever seen four such contests, with three in 2020, one in 2002 and the first in 1986.
