This is by far the longest clinical ex situ preservation ever published, and was achieved using a self-assembled machine containing an automated pump system for graft perfusion; membrane dialysis for waste-product removal and electrolyte, hematocrit and acid–base balance control; a continuous administration of nutritive and vasoactive drugs; an automated control of glucose levels by injection of insulin and glucagon; a fine regulation of portal venous oxygen saturation; and a mechanism for continuous liver movement to prevent pressure necrosis.
