And, for the two council seats on the ballot, they should pick incumbent Tony Daysog and political newcomer Paul Beusterien. We are definitely aligned with the priorities that I want to pursue on the Board of Supervisors. Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft  Mayor – Ashcraft Since she was elected mayor in 2018, Ashcraft has been a breath of fresh air. But the group wasn’t finished. She is well-informed on city issues, works well with others and has been a calm leader during the pandemic. No matter the city issue, Ashcraft can engage in a thoughtful discussion with analysis that appreciates the policy and political nuances. An appellate court is scheduled to hear the case in November. Her primary opponent is Trish Spencer, a divisive council member who had a disastrous term as mayor when she served from 2014-18. Spencer, who overstepped her authority with city staff, wanted the city to switch to a strong-mayor form of government under which she would be the top administrator. Meanwhile, the delay has cost Eden some of the tax-advantaged financing it had lined up, forcing the group to wait until the litigation is resolved before reapplying. “We are taking nothing for granted, and continuing to reach out to voters, including precinct walking, mailing, online, and speaking with community groups,” Kaplan added. That’s the last thing this city needs. The third candidate in the race is Barack D. Seppala’s group paid signature gatherers to circulate a referendum petition to try to overturn the sale — even though the city attorney had determined that the council action was administrative and not subject to a referendum. Obama Shaw. No, that’s not his birth name. A Superior Court judge and an appellate court refused to grant a stay, and the sale went through in September. He says he legally changed it in 2013.” She also expressed interest in boosting alternative mental-health programs that don’t rely on law enforcement responses like one in place in the city of Alameda for two years, and Oakland’s recently launched MACRO program. He also says he’s a business communications consultant. Misleading campaign For each effort to block the project, Seppala and her allies operate under a different group. He has little knowledge of city issues and has never run for office before. He told us he wants pay raises for school teachers and to keep children safe in school, which suggests that he should be running for school board, not mayor. While they purport to be grassroots efforts, the groups have spent more than $330,000 in the past four years for professional signature gathering for their ballot measures, according to research and analysis by Woerner, the current mayor. Council – Daysog, Beusterien There are two City Council openings on the ballot and only one incumbent running. That’s because John Knox White decided one term was enough and is not seeking reelection.4 million-plus in funding has come from Seppala, her husband, her sister and other relatives. When asked about her opponent, Tam pointed in part to her mayoral endorsements. Tony Daysog (Laura A. Oda/Bay Area News Group) Four of the six candidates running deserve serious consideration. For the Nov. The checkered past of a fifth, Jim Oddie, should eliminate him from voters’ consideration. And the sixth, Bill Pai, dropped out. The officers for the group are the same as those for one of the prior groups. Daysog, the only incumbent in the race, has served three stints on the council, totaling nearly 18 years. Kaplan pointed to her work with Chan to pass a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages to fund community health and nutrition programs, and her success in finding new funding to support the county’s Chan-backed All In Eats, which delivers healthy food to seniors, people with disabilities, and others in need. A city planner by training, he tends to march to his own drummer, sometimes to a fault, but his understanding of the city’s finances and housing issues is excellent. One of the mailers from the group misleadingly accuses Marchand, Branning and Chiong of trying to block a public vote on the City Council decision to sell land to Eden for affordable housing. Paul Beusterien  Beusterien, a software engineer and board member of the Community of Harbor Bay Isle homeowners’ group, demonstrated a sharp understanding of the city’s long-unresolved pension debt problem. He also is an advocate of ranked-choice voting for Alameda. The mailer also doesn’t mention that a judge has denied Move Eden Housing’s attempt to block the sale, saying that it had not shown it is likely to prevail on its lawsuit claiming a public vote would be permissible. This race, in which someone such as Oddie could win a seat because voters split on four better-qualified candidates, is an excellent example of why Alamedans should consider ranked-choice voting. The system, already used by Berkeley, Oakland and San Leandro, requires voters rank their preferences to ensure winners garner majority support. We’re witnessing a manipulative powerplay by a small, well-funded group that wants to control Livermore politics.. The other thoughtful candidates in the race are Tracy Jensen, a member of the Alameda Health Care District board and former trustee of the Alameda Unified School District, and Hannah Groce, who has worked on housing policy for the cities of Oakland and San Francisco. Neither was as well-informed on city finances as Daysog and Beusterien. They should elect Marchand, Branning and Chiong. In contrast, there’s Oddie. .
