Greg Abbott has said he intends to use at least half of the surplus to reduce property taxes. While Whitmire does not outright oppose that idea, he believes there is some “momentum” to find more creative uses for those funds. He has done a number of interviews, many of them televised, but this will be the first and maybe only chance for voters to see him in an extended exchange, with no edits. “We have a lot of deferred maintenance, we have prisons that have horrible conditions, we don't have a mental health system that is functioning to help people in their communities,” Whitmire told the editorial board. Aside from the substance of his answers, it’s a chance to show voters he’s well enough to do the job.” His challenger, Republican George Vachris, 72, is an engineer and public school math teacher. He’s running to improve Texas’ failing infrastructure, with a particular focus on the state’s vulnerable electric grid in the wake of Winter Storm Uri in 2021. Julia had the scoop and the details. According to the letter, Fetterman's physical exam was normal with blood pressure 116/82. Unfortunately, Vachris is woefully misinformed on what actually caused the problems that led to millions of Texans losing power during the freeze, parroting false talking points about the vulnerability of wind power despite federal regulators concluding that the state's natural gas system failed on multiple levels and was the largest contributor to the grid failure. One issue that both Whitmire and Vachris agree on is public safety. “You have to be really careful about how you handle that, particularly as a physician,” said Berwood Yost, of Franklin & Marshall College. Both are keen observers who clearly understand the myriad factors contributing to rising crime rates across Harris County and Houston in the past two years — they mentioned the criminal case backlog in the courts and a lack of accountability for judges granting bonds to repeat violent offenders. Governor takes appropriate medications to optimize his heart condition and prevent future strokes," the letter states It also says he can walk four to five miles regularly without difficulty. Among his biggest accomplishments in the past decade are “smart-on-crime” reforms such as banning the biased “pick-a-pal” grand jury system and shepherding the Sandra Bland Act, which diverts mentally ill inmates toward treatment and requires independent investigations into jail deaths. "Since my stroke five months ago, one of the best parts of this campaign has been the unbelievable number of Pennsylvanians who have shared their own stories with us about the major health problems they've faced and overcome in their lives," Fetterman said in a statement upon releasing the doctor's letter. Yet he too can at times fall into the habit of sounding like he’s auditioning for the mayoral stump, pleading for state and local officials to work together to solve the problem rather than pushing for specific bold measures. How much will the candidates address each other? Can Oz relate? Oz is a polished daytime TV host who knows his camera angles and how to craft TV moments, but one of his biggest challenges has been proving he’s also a relatable Pennsylvanian. Here's how to submit letters and op-eds to the Chronicle When asked whether he’d be open to amending the state constitution to allow judges broader discretion in detaining defendants who pose a public safety risk, Whitmire demurred. “I’m very cautious on directing judges on what they can and can’t do,” Whitmire said. Mehmet Oz who has accused him of a lack of transparency leading up to the election. “So, you know, when I speak about my concern about the courthouse, I'm very careful to say there's some judges that I would not disagree with their practices.” Instead, Whitmire said he would continue to push for a new state law that would require bail bondsmen to collect a minimum 10 percent payment before they post bond for individuals accused of violent crimes — a measure that the .
