Gamescom Is Still Going Ahead For Now, Coronavirus Threat Being Evaluated "Daily" Nintendo Life Official statement provided by Share: With the likes of , , and more major gaming events all being postponed or cancelled by the threat of the coronavirus outbreak, the first half of the year is looking a little bare. Naturally, then, all eyes now fall to gamescom which is currently planned for August. The event organisers have an official statement on the matter this morning, addressing concerns raised by those interested in attending. At present, the trade fair will be going ahead as normal, with legal requirements in its host city of Cologne only forcing large events up until 10th April to be banned. Recommendations from responsible authorities are being evaluated on "a daily basis": "We are currently receiving enquiries about how a possible threat from the coronavirus could affect gamescom. We take this topic very seriously because the health of all trade fair visitors and partners is our top priority. On 10.03.2020, the city of Cologne banned all major events with more than 1,000 participants up to and including 10.04.2020 on the basis of a decree issued by the state government on the same day. Since gamescom takes place at the end of August 2020, we are not currently affected by this decree. However, we will of course follow the recommendations of the responsible authorities regarding major events, evaluate them on a daily basis and make our decisions after careful consideration. The preparations for gamescom 2020 are continuing as planned according to the current status for the determined date. Should gamescom be postponed or cancelled by Koelnmesse, all ticket purchases of the official ticket shop will be reimbursed for the already paid visitor tickets. Voucher codes lose their validity and will be made available again for new events. We look forward to you and your participation." Should the event go ahead as planned, it'll take place from 25th - 29th August. You can find the event's official website . He’d much rather just have a night in with Mario Kart and a pizza, and we can’t say we blame him. Comments ) Cool yes very smart move for a definitely necessary event where the laws of nature don’t apply I'd like to think the epidemic will have been stemmed by August. Here's hoping! It's far enough out we might be in the clear by then, And I'm hoping thats the case. I think realistically we are going to be dealing with this all year At least there's some good news despite the pandemic. While it's likely true that this won't go away by summer, it doesn't help to start cancelling all events that far in advance. I think you're right, as well. Especially since there's still cases of Ebola, H1N1, SARS, MERS, and typical flu. Only around half the USA even gets the annual flu vaccine. Here's hoping they'll figure something out for events like this that still let companies show their projects and give people cool things to see. I'll take "Bad ideas" for $1000, Alex. I'm all for canceling events and whatever else it takes but they just shut down E3, scheduled for June, so I think they should wait a couple of months before canceling Gamescon if need be. I mean August, geez, let's get the kids back to school in April before we start talking end of summer. Can we at least get to Friday and get ACNH out. what are you basing that on, and what your metric for helping? Have you been keeping with this? At this rate, we could expect another video game crash as per 1983, except this time people will be burying the mass copies of WWE 2K20. it’s all just part of a refusal to believe that we are stuck with this for a while, people will die, and the global economy could tank Of course i have been keeping with this, but deciding to cancel every even that is 5 months away doesn't improve what is happening today, and just feeds into the panic people are feeling. I'm not one of the people saying it's not big deal and ignoring the significance, but making decisions that far ahead, without allowing time to get the full picture of what it will look like even a month or two out doesn't keep it from spreading. August is still a ways out so I would like to think this whole pandemic thing will be behind us by that time but you never know... by August everything should be fine can't just just everything down in the world Hopefully by then the peak will have passed and it will be coming down. But at the moment it's anyone's guess. I can see this being cancelled too, alongside the Olympics. exactly! The idea is that cancelling events like This is a preventative measure. Absolutely no reason a big video game conference should be happening in Europe 5 months from now. Scientists have no idea how big this will get. It’s about acting now for the future. This should have started months ago If Nintendo was really concerned about our wellbeing they'd release ACNH immediately so we don't go crazier than we already are. Don't count on schools being reopened in April. There's talk of hoping to reopen in September. I hope you are feeling better. It's not, it's reported to hit its peak by may and then gradually decline until fall - winter, this year. Until they're legally required to cancel the event, they will not be able to collect on insurance. If they cannot collect on insurance it will be financially disastrous. As in they may never be able to hold another event. This underpins the cancellation of all the recent events. They're not cheap. Morning mum. Hopefully you're sane enough to not spend too much time on twitter so here's what I posted 21 hours ago.
