My uncle passed me down his old Walkman and cassettes like Daydream Nation, Nevermind, Fugazi’s In on the Kill Taker etc. The fuzz and artifacts in the audio actually add to that sorta music and I prefer those versions to the vinyl. With the SoR soundtracks, I reckon the fuzz would add to it too as they’re kinda hazy, druggy bangers for you to rave to at 4AM. I’m really tempted to get the cassettes even though I already own the second one on vinyl. Aw thats awesome! Vinyl quality as a media is worse. What people liked about vinyl was better mastering. Now you have the product of the loudness wars from CD being pressed onto cheap vinyl for idiot kids. That's called noise. It's a defect. I already own them on vinyl, but those cassettes are really tempting, as I actually still listen to my cassettes and it's a more "retro" package than the CDs. I'd be tempted by those as well, but frankly, a CD I can easily burn and I'm not a fan of digipaks. There's literally no reason to buy cassettes in 2020. Once upon a time they were handy because they were the only media you could record on at home. They lost that advantage before the turn of the century. Their audio quality can be good but degrades rapidly with every play, and they are fragile as hell. (Source: I'm older than audio tapes) Loads of new vinyls is from original master tapes etc.
Atleast in the metal genre as sound quality is very important there. You are correct, the smaller labels are doing this right. The stuff designed to attract kids, isn't. You think this is going to be that? Certain genres just suit the noise. Plenty bands’ best albums were before they had access to high quality equipment too. Not everything that sounds ‘better’ actually is better. Honestly, try listening to any early Daniel Johnston on Spotify and you’ll understand why it suits tape. I’m all over cassettes ! Love them and I love seeing video games getting them on cassette, perfect format for them imo ! Ordered !! I never said otherwise, however it is a recording and playback defect. Personally, I rather find artists who sound like they do live. I like live music and recorded music is to me only a substitute for live music. If you don't view recordings as a replacement for live music then the accuracy of the reproduction doesn't matter. The music in Streets of Rage 4 is digital, so there is no benefit on having it on Vinyl or any other analogue format.
Recording real analogue instruments to analogue is where you get the best sound.
Big record companies which you hint at is probably caring less about sound, and might even transfer sound digitally to vinyl. Then you can just play a CD instead. Anyways. Cassettes have started to become a trend again, so it's not just here. I don't think much new music is released on cassettes yet atleast.
Vinyl players can be bought everywhere, but tape players is quite rare nowadays. I still have a big proper HI-FI Tape player from JVC with great sound. Hahaha I love this. Also, SoRII has the best gametrack ever I don't understand why you are abusing the word real this way. There is no magic about analogue. They all have minimum resolutions anyway. How fast a needle can move, how fast something can be cut, etc. The best sound is that with the least noise. There are no analogue formats that I know of that have a low noise floor. Vinyl is noisy as heck. That's that famous warmness, just like tubes. Those are defects not found in the original sound when it was recorded. I don’t blame you for thinking so, but there are a number of tape manufacturers in the states. I’ve put out a few releases on cassette as well as a bunch of my colleagues in the independent music world. That said, they’ve been a trend for years now just depends on what circle you’re in I guess. Lots of new music comes out on cassette. There’s beauty to the format. I love being able to take my boombox to the park or wherever. Feels much better than using my phone with a Bluetooth. You can get a boombox that accepts bluetooth.
Why make everyone else at the park suffer with your music though? Who makes tapes in the USA? I agree that it's cooler with a boombox than a phone with a BT speaker. There is no charm with a phone. Buying the digital album for sure! A stupid novelty of no benefit whatsoever. I had my fun with cassettes back in the day (I used to record music videos on VHS and then transfer the audio from the tapes to cassettes as I couldn't afford to buy all the singles/albums that I wanted), and while my memories are fond ones, I have no intention of regressing. I believe I may have transferred whatever few CDs I had to cassette as well as I only had a cassette Walkman in the late 90s (everybody else seemed to have a Discman). And on that note, I don't see people clamouring for films to be presented on VHS again (and cropped to hell and back). I understand the yearning for a certain type of sound/aesthetic, but that is typically better handled in production/post-production. For example, I prefer films to be shot on 16/35mm film, and while some films try to get away by faking it in post, one can tell the difference if they know what to look for.
