Leseliey Welch has co-founded a birthing center in Detroit and enlisted the help of an impact investing fund to steer capital into birth centers across the U.S. run by and for people of color. Leseliey Welch, a former public health official, wants to help improve birth outcomes in communities of color. She believes midwives working in free-standing child birth centers will be key. .Babies born at birth centers are 25% less likely to be born preterm versus those receiving typical Medicaid care, according to a 2018by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid.Still, the vast majority of U.S. births todaytake place in hospitals. Of the roughly 400 birth centers in operation, less than 5% are led by Black, Indigenous or people of color. There have been efforts in state legislatures and Congress to expand access to birth centers, but today many are boutique operations whose main clientele tend to be white and educated.
