Ampex Brands shifted from franchisee to franchisor with the acquisition of Au Bon Pain Bakery and Cafe in June of 2021, adding 171 cafes to its portfolio.By. What was the biggest challenge to growth in the past few years and how did you overcome it? The widespread adoption of third-party restaurant delivery apps ignited by the 2020 pandemic has posed a challenge for the Original ChopShop brand. To compete with these providers, the neighborhood eatery has introduced new technologies, including its new branded app, loyalty program and gamification training system. We also have enjoyed the lowest interest rates in history, which has allowed our team to provide financing for more homeowners than ever before. … This led to digital sales accounting for 46% of total revenue in 2021, compared to 37% in 2020 and 15% in 2019. We acquired Au Bon Pain in 2021 and bellagreen in 2022 after recognizing the opportunity to turnaround brands that didn’t weather the pandemic as well or were looking to divest. The Chops app and loyalty program, powered by Paytronix, was a significant digital sales driver with 71% of direct digital orders originating in the Chops app by year-end. This happened quickly and our business grew rapidly, while our employees were having to work from home. In addition, the brand implemented a new training platform in 2021, 1Huddle, an interactive training system that digitally gamifies new material to engage team members while also using repetition techniques to improve information recall. Where do you see growth opportunities for 2023 and beyond? The brand will open its fourth in Atlanta next month and has six new Shop openings planned in existing markets over the next eight months. Our great employees stepped up and did the rest by going above and beyond, and working harder than ever. Au Bon Pain will open 11 new locations in 2022, signed four new franchise agreements and announced a new bakery designed to be rolled out companywide in 2023. Additionally, Original ChopShop just opened its new home office in DFW. What is something that will change your industry in the future? Continued migration to off-premise dining and hybrid work models along with the growth of the Metaverse will change the restaurant industry in the future.
