Random: After 25 Years, Ash Ketchum Is Now The Very Best, Like No One Ever Was Nintendo Life Pokémon protagonist finally becomes world champion by Share: Image: The Pokémon Company Well folks, it finally happened. After 25 years, the protagonist of the Pokémon TV series, Ash Ketchum, has finally achieved his dream of becoming a Pokémon World Champion. Since the very beginning of the series back in 1997, our lovable trainer has tried countless times to become the very best, but ultimately failed time and time again. Now, however, after beating Leon during the Masters Eight Tournament of the Pokémon World Coronation Series in an episode entitled "The Finals IV: Partner", Ash has finally done it. - Pokémon (@Pokemon) The episode has only aired in Japan so far, but will be broadcast for western audiences in the future. It was a close call for Ash, regardless, who lost the majority of his team - including Gengar, Dragonite, Dracovish, Sirfetch’d, and Lucario - before his beloved Pikachu managed to take down Leon's Charizard. The episode also featured multiple familiar faces, as highlighted by webmaster Joe Merrick below: - Joe Merrick (@JoeMerrick) It's certainly been a long time coming, and it begs the question: where does Ash go from here? Well, the obvious answer would be Paldea. With on the horizon, no doubt the TV series will branch out into the new region, requiring Ash to compete against a whole host of new characters and Pokémon. Please don't be mad, I edit my comments 12 times before they are clear of typos usually. XD And it only took (give or take) 1200 episodes? Cool, definitely getting the feeling this will be the point they retire him as MC since he's basically achieved his goal. 25 years and not aged one bit. Should call him hasbulla ketchum instead. You know what guys? Screw you for this headline. Some people here actually watch the show and want to avoid spoilers for an upcoming episode...
What's next, you guys are gonna post the leaked final evolutions of Scarlet and Violet starters? Thanks for the spoilers I guess. That’s twice that he is won? It’s about time, with all the battling he has done, he has a whole boat of experience, which this show showcases pretty well. Removed - unconstructive feedback Jumped the Sharpedo Gives credence to the rumour that they may be dropping Ash from the anime at the end of this season, and moving on with all-new characters in Paldea. Last time I saw Pokémon, a gaggle of Gyarados was attacking the cruise ship. What have I missed?
The second time he's won a major league yeah.
Although the Alola league was brand new when he challenged it, so it's not as prestiguous as something like the Kanto League, Sinnoh League, Kalos League, etc. Ash defeat on the Kalos League still sting on me, now this victory has avanged me. All of this in under 1 year, at the age of 10.
Well done, Ash! And how many girls did he friendzone before achieving his goal? If they do change Ash as the main character, it has to be in the same way the anime started (someone turning on a Game Boy and playing a Pokémon version, only this time pixelating the image and turning off a GB).
It did occur to me that with the direction of Scarlet and Violet having very generic school child protagonists, that this really could be the end of Ash Ketchum's journey as they take the games and the animated series in a new direction.
Historically, Ash Ketchum's new look for each new region had some basis on the default male protagonist for each new game with a debut region. Ah, that’s true! I forgot about that, my bad, 1221, not counting movies and specials. Well.. that was season one. There are 25 seasons. So.. a lot. I do hope they will move away from Ash now, he got a bit boring through the years. He won the Alola league a few years ago Thanks for the spoiler It's been a while, but Ash did win the Orange League and Battle Frontier. Not that anybody cares about those accomplishments anymore XD So, the pokemon anime can finally move on from Ash Spoiler much? It only took a quarter century, and he still looks like a teenager. No big deal. maybe in some universe where the franchise is not a money printing machine. Never give up on your dreams, even if it takes you 25 years. Plot twist… everyone forgets who Ash is next season like his victory was some fever dream. Geez, Ollie Reynolds. Thanks for the MASSIVE SPOILERS, dude...
¬_¬ Made an account just to say thanks for the MASSIVE SPOILERS for episodes that won't be aired in english for another year.
Not even a spoiler warning, just right on the home page "here's the spoiler in the title so you can't miss it." I don’t watch Pokémon anymore, but I gotta say, that’s pretty cool. Reminds me of when I would watch the newest episodes at the time when Ash was at the Pokémon league and I would be super invested lol Clearly, this confirms the formula for eternal youth. We should've entered a portal to the Pokeverse, began training Pokemon, and working towards the goal of a Pokemon Master. Then we'd all still be adolescents. XD Thankfully I stopped watching many years ago otherwise I'd be pretty annoyed at the massive spoiler. This sort of thing isn't cool. Can we stop with Ash as the protagonist now? It only took him 26 years to do what most of us can do in a matter of days. Watched this earlier today, was actually a good epsiode. I thought Serena was missing, she is there. But I can't believe you've just ruined the ending for anyone who doesn't watch the Japanese version ?? Spoilers much. As someone whose making his way through Master Journeys with his kids, this is a major d**k move to post spoilers. Not that I'm happy about it either, but to be fair, the official English Pokémon Twitter spoilt it before it's aired in English. NL only did their job and reported what's official. Yeah, I realized that after I made the comment, but it's still a d*** move. I wonder if the conditions have been met now to lift the curse that's clearly been placed on the people of this world. Imagine finding out you're not allowed to get older until some dufus spends 25 years trying to win a major Pokemon tournament! But yeah, new protagonist, please. I can't take a show seriously when it's still about the same darned kid I was watching as a tot. This kind of headline is pretty inconsiderate. The episode isn't even available outside Japan, famsubs not even yet available from what I know. A title a bit more vague like "Ash's Most Climatic Battle Yet Concludes!" Or something would have been a lot more appreciated. Blatantly spoiling the result (one that comes as quite a shock considering the direction the previous episodes were heading) takes a lot of wind out of the sails for us who couldn't watch till later (or those stuck waiting months for the dub). Same thing happened every other big climax moment in the anime. So many news sources were so quick to talk about the big Alola finale too. Not like they had to put the result in the title itself. Spreading the mistake to spoil the results to people who don't have their eyes on the official Pokémon Twitter is still poor form. OK, but they still didn't need to post the spoiler in the title of the article. They could have just as easily labeled it as "Pokémon Anime Spoilers" or something and left it up to us to decide if we wanted to be spoiled or not. This is a new low for NintendoLife. I don't watch the anime, but wow, you guys really don't care about spoilers anymore. PLEASE change the damn title. I'm gonna try to be relatively calm about this, but I actually watch the show and am a few seasons behind. How dare you spoil this and in this fashion. What the hell, NL!? What the heck made you think a click-inducing headline was more important than spoiling this for viewers?? That is not a rhetorical question, I'd love an answer. Celebrate googd times come on. Now let’s get a good protagonist who understands how to Pokémon battle and maybe a more mature series about a police officer hunting an evil team Wow, I grew up watching the original anime up through Battle Frontier, so this is a pretty big achievement for Ash. About time. Didn't they once say that if Ash wins the series is over? Well…he finally did it…I’m gonna kick the bucket Eh? He still has to catch Ho-Oh and evolve his Pikachu. The ratings would be through the roof. yugioh went away with Yugi and is still doing fine. In fact, I liked Jaden more than Yugi Why are you spoiling this?! Not cool YESSSSS
Now time skip or have Goh take over as protagonist Ok, now evolve that damn rat... I still go with the theory that Ho-Oh, as one of its Dex entries says it does, granted Ash's inner wish for happiness. Happiness for Ash is the journey to be the best, thus Ho-Oh made him a forever-young Pokemon trainer. Anyway... so I guess we can move on and finally have a new protagonist and mascot? OR... just make an anime out of the Pokemon Adventures manga. Saw the episode earlier today, was one of the best episodes in the series! , I think they have mentioned something like that yeah, but they probably have said a bunch of things they don't really follow anymore, like that the reason they switch female main characters is to give viewers new eye candy
While it would have been awesome to see the original starters back in his team, it's awesome that he did it with a Dragonite and a Gengar, two of my favorite pokemon. I'm not sure how different this is from this other article from 2019 It would be 22 years instead of 25. This is an anime made for kids. It's just to have a familiar character there, and that's it. I know it's not exactly the same, but Simpsons have not aged in +30 years and none bats an eye. The Nintendolife's article from back then: Clearly the next logical anime step is for him to get sucked into a higher realm to compete the inter-dimensional Pokemon league. That's true, as much as it pains me to admit it, though I still hope that one day they'll at least branch out with a Pokemon Adventures anime as a more mature spin-off like the one that featured Red. Wow... I'm actually watching the anime and the dub is nowhere near those episodes yet, a spoiler warning would have been fantastic... this is such a huge spoiler I am so disappointed... not how I wanted to find out about this outcome, kinda really ruined the suspense of watching the anime now... Still watching one episode per day. Right now I am in season 8. Great way to start the day and I can not wait to see that moment. Even BBC news is reporting on this. About damn time, The thing is, this episode just recently aired in Japan and you are posting about it in an English language news site which obviously means the people reading this speak English so that would obviously imply that most of the anime fans still keeping up with the anime are watching the English dub which is currently about 20ish or more episodes BEHIND the Japan series. Ash only just recently reached the Master class so this... this was a big major spoiler... sorry, but we do not appreciated this at all. I sure I'm glad I don't watch the show because I would have just had the ending spoiled Like many others here, this is beyond disappointing to have this so blatantly spoiled - the English version isn't even close to this episode yet. And I remember them spoiling the Alola league result for me as well. This is so easily avoidable - just don't include the spoiler in the title itself. But I guess that would require common sense... I'll admit it was bull how Tobias just had back-to-back legendaries. At least some of Ash's Pokemon did put up a good fight but still lost. I was happy to see he won Alola and now the Pokemon Masters Coronation. I'm not gonna lose my crap about this and I'll admit to being the first to suggest staying off social media til you got a chance to consume whatever it is you don't want spoiled. But in the case of this, I was taken aback the English twitter account spoiled this when I saw it this morning. In fact, I thought they were tweeting about his Alolan win (which did happen. So the impression as if this is the first time he's won a championship is a bit odd). I saw all kinds of explanations as to why they may have chosen to do so. One was that they knew it would get spoiled anyways. Which I can understand on some level. But maybe it's just my twitter feed. I rarely see anyone spoil anime plots when they air initially in Japan. So that didn't seem like that would be an issue. I also don't consistently see the English account tweet out spoilers from the anime. Which would at least provide some context as to why they chose to do it. But they don't. So why choose to spoil, of all things, this?
There's a big difference, though. As someone who watches the anime, I would never follow or check the official Pokemon Twitter, as I would expect to find spoilers for something Pokemon-related there. I wouldn't expect to have to avoid a site covering all Nintendo gaming news for fear of having something in the Pokemon anime spoiled. That would be unreasonable - I'd never be able to follow any Nintendo news at all in that case. I remember there was an interview where it was asked why Ash never wins the championship, and the reason was because they needed a reason for him to keep training, for him to keep exploring the world, and now he's achieved his dream, so what else is there? This may be a hot take, but I hope they'll switch out protagonists for each region from here on out. I'm getting sick of the same joke that Ash is a 35-year-old trapped in a 10-year-old's body, and giving the series a new protagonist presents an opportunity to not give them a name with Ace Attorney levels of silliness. World Champion, yes
Pokémon Master, no
his adventure is not yet finished people For the people complaining about spoilers: The entire world is talking about this. It would be IMPOSSIBLE to avoid. And i would say that 95% of the people celebrating abandoned the anime years ago. Speaking of which, The Odyssey of Ash Ketchum is over and the anime should end aswell. No reboots trying to make a New protagonist. Focus on games, movies, toys, cards, and so on... I for one, would have never known if NLife hadn't put it in the headline.
Furthermore the anime has been one of the biggest drivers of the series since the beginning. I doubt it's going away. Twenty-five years later, Ash is the World Champion. What the heck have /I/ been doing with my life in that time? >.> Well, I'm not an anime character, so... Congrats, Ash, and what an awesome moment! <3 See this is the problem I have with cartoons. If it took him 25 years to achieve this why is he still 10 years old??? Now he has to become a Pokemon champion of the universe I'm over a decade out of date on the anime, but didn't Ash just win his first proper regional league a few years ago? I'm pretty sure they're supposed to squeeze another few seasons out of him before they let him actually accomplish anything again. Wow. Thanks for the spoiler. You really had to do us like this, huh? Wait… where is Charzard in the pic? Did Ash get rid of him from his team? ?
Like , I would never have had this spoiled if not for seeing it on this site. I'm essentially never on social media, and I follow this site for Nintendo (video game) news. Crazy, I know. So not, in fact, impossible. In addition to being in poor taste to spoil something like this and the fact that the topic has nothing to do with anything video game related, another thought occurred to me: Who exactly is the target audience for this article? Because the way I see it, some people never watched the show, some watched it in the past but stopped due to lack of interest, and some still watch it to this day. Well, those who never watched it don't care, so it's not for them. Those who used to watch it but stopped clearly care very little about it - at most, they might read it and say 'Oh, cool' or 'how bout that.' (Along with casual jokes about Ash being a 35-year-old kid.) Whereas those who still watch it have a central 25-year-long-built-up plot point spoiled. So I'm genuinely curious who the target audience was, and whether any perceived reaction by them was worth the blatant spoiler visible without even clicking on the article. So what next? Ash finally runs into his dad who is revealed to be the Pokémon master? You will be punished for you heinous spoiler crimes, NL. I regret that I've ever given you a chance.
>:- ( Like most people my age I watched some episodes of this as a child at the height of the Pokemon craze in the late 90s. Crazy to think its still going. Let this be a lesson older Millennials, you too can accomplish your dreams… decades behind the average age for such milestones. Don’t give up, your student loan debt should be almost paid off by now right…right? My man. He finally did it in my lifetime. The Pokemon games always left open Red, who was an older more experienced version of Ash Ketchum. Here's to hoping they have him as an adult being the ultimate antagonist / rival of a new series where he just snuffs out all the competition with his fully evolved set of started Pokemon. To everyone complaining about the spoilers, blame the official English Pokemon Twitter account as they spoiled the whole thing first before the episode aired in English. Nintendo Life could have worded the headline differently yes but they only reported on whats been made official here. On-topic, I haven't watched the anime series in years now as I lost interest in Pokemon a long time ago, but hey congrats Ash for making your dream come true after 25 years and not aging one bit.? Thanks for the mayor spoiler Nintendo Life... Would have been cool to experience this unspoiled with my kiddo. Guess I'm of this site... ***** spoiler culture I guess he will travel to "Spain" now and lose the champion title. Haven't watched the anime since the early Diamond and Pearl episodes, but this is really awesome, it's like a chapter from my childhood is now complete. I still remember crying when Ash lost to Richie in the Kanto league. Thanks Nintendo Life for the spoiler in the title. In my region, the last part is not even released. Been waiting since may and now you ruined it for me. Spoiler in title AND picture. I forgot why I took a pause from NL. I guess it's time for another one. NL could've taken some care to not spoil the point in the headline, but I get the hustle of farming clicks in the same way the English Pokemon's Twitter account was. Why did the official Twitter spoil it too though? Are they self-aware and know a majority of the longtime fans watch fansubs? My bet is more corporate; I think the spoiler is getting out there early to illustrate their intention to replace Ash as the protag. Sorta like how all the Marvel actors like Chris Evans and RDJ announced ahead of time that Endgame was the last movie in their contract and they weren't planning to renew.
The Pokemon Twitter can apparently be blamed, yes. However, at least people like myself who still watch the show (in English, long after the Japanese release) could easily choose to never look at the official Pokemon Twitter account, for fear that something could be spoiled - which is what I do, I've never looked at the Twitter account. This site, on the other hand, is supposed to be about Nintendo video game news - a far more broad topic that shouldn't cross paths with the Pokemon anime in any way. So watchers of the show like myself wouldn't generally expect to see articles about it here - let alone spoiled instantly in the article title without even having to click on it. That's why it's a bigger problem and frankly inexcusable to have it spoiled so inconsiderately in a place like this. The entire point is to get you to click and engage. The same way they "warn" about broken streetdates and roms being out for new games. It's counter productive for us who want to consume good content, but farms easy engagement. Also, didn't Ash win in the Orange Isles arc? That was the last one I watched. It might be an unpopular opinion, but maybe it might be time to end the Pokémon anime, now that he has achieved his dream of becoming the very best. Or at least, end Ash's story in favor of a new protagonist. If they go the latter route, the new protagonist, who could be from Paldea, could very well be inspired by Ash, and go on an adventure of their own. Later, after suffering a major defeat, they fall into a deep depression, and consider giving up. At that point, they run into an adult Ash, who gives them some sage advice to never give up, even when the going gets tough. I just think that the current formula of the anime got stale really quickly, especially since Team Rocket (as in, Jessie, James, and Meowth) was usually the villain for almost every episode. I could understand it with Kanto and Johto, but by the time they got to Hoenn and Sinnoh, it started getting old. So I think the anime either needs a major revamp, with a new story and protagonist, or it needs to end altogether, since Ash has now achieved his dream and became the very best. Well, they still haven't announced any series to continue with Gen 9 yet. Normally we get the news of a new series months ahead of time. So this really sounds to be the case. Also, the final episode title is called "Pokemon: I'm glad to have met you", giving some... implications. This wasn't just another league. This was a world championship where even previous and current Gym Leaders and League Champions were contenders. (Not spoilers here, by the way. Iris was a contender after having been crowned as Unova's Champion in the anime and her qualifier match with Ash was already aired worldwide.)
Well, I hope the clicks were worth it for them, only to lose multiple viewers... And yes, he did win the Orange Islands challenge in season 2, way back in 2000. He also won the Battle Frontier challenge in season 9. Though both of those challenges weren't league competition formats - just Ash working his way up to a singular challenge against one person, which I believe he could even retry again if he lost. It wasn't until season 22 in the Alola league that he won a true league competition (which couldn't simply be retried if he lost).
Well, I counted at least 25 of us here in the comments who were disappointed and/or frustrated that this massive spoiler was revealed right in the headline on the main page - 6 to 9 months before the episode can even be viewed in English. Along with at least two others who said as much in the comments, I will no longer be visiting this site going forward, even though I have been for as longer as I can remember. I've already asked my brother to just let me know about any Nintendo news that might interest me in the future. My only regret is that I didn't make this decision a couple of years ago, when Ash's first League win in Alola was also spoiled for me. I guess I didn't think anything as big as that could be spoiled again, at least not so soon. I've learned my lesson - too late, unfortunately. This was very, very disappointing and frustrating. I got that. I was just referring to how he went twenty years between Orange and Alola without a win, then managed to go from regional to world champ in like three. I guess it's not like the show actually has continuity, though. 25 years really "You know what guys? Screw you for this headline. Some people here actually watch the show and want to avoid spoilers for an upcoming episode...
What's next, you guys are gonna post the leaked final evolutions of Scarlet and Violet starters?" (suggestion: no insulting (or any form of rudeness)) I don't see how I insulted anyone.
And it isn't even that rude. It could be worded much worse after all. Leave A Comment Hold on there, you need to to post a comment...
