The many villagers of are easy to fall in love with, from their goofy dialogue to their many day-to-day activities on their island. Many players of Animal Crossing enjoy the series so much because of the relationships that can be formed with the characters, and choose to put significant effort into building these relationships. Similar to real-life, giving gifts to a friend will often benefit the friendship, and New Horizons has a fairly complex friendship mechanic that thrives on gift-giving. Figure Out Their Favorite Colors

The first step of gift-giving is almost identical to real life: finding out what the recipient likes and enjoys. Each villager in Animal Crossing has a favorite color (or two) which will influence the number of friendship points a gift adds. In the example above, a list of clothing items can be seen that would work excellently for popular villager Marina. The favorite colors of Marina are Pink and Red, meaning that items that are designated as pink or red will give more friendship points than other items.

Find Out Their Style

Not only do villagers have favorite colors, but they also have a preferred style that can often be deduced from their home decor or clothing. Such styles include Active, Cute, Simple, Elegant, Gorgeous, and Cool. An example of a Cute clothing item that Rosie would love is the Flower Sweater (note that it does not have to correspond with her favorite colors.) Unfortunately, no confirmed list of categorized clothing styles exists for New Horizons as of yet, leaving players to rely on deduction or an outside guide.

Remember Which Clothes They Can Wear And Can t Wear

When giving a clothing item to a villager, it's always a good idea to keep in mind which clothes they can actually show off. Villagers can wear shirts, sweaters, dresses, most hats, and glasses. This leaves out shoes, socks, backpacks, and pants, though they will still accept these clothing items. A great way to see which clothing villagers can wear (and how they look in it) is to go to Harv's Island, where all clothing catalogued by the player will be available for modelling on their villagers (and amiibos scanned in.)

Wrap Your Gift

It's time to put Bells aside for buying wrapping paper. Able to be purchased at Cranny, wrapping paper is extremely useful for raising friendship with villagers, so stockpiling is never a bad idea. Wrapping any gift will increase the friendship points earned by 1, a valuable addition considering only one gift can be given to a villager each day.

Consider Gift Values

As mentioned previously, all gifts will have a set amount of friendship points rewarded. Non-preferred clothing items add 1 friendship point, while preferred clothing adds 2. Items such as tools (watering can, fishing rod, etc.) will add 2 friendship points, while garbage items such as the boot, empty can, and tire will subtract 2 friendship points. Spoiled turnips will also subtract 2 friendship points, so don't pawn any garbage off on villagers!

Break Out The Big Bells

There are plenty of in Animal Crossing, meaning that players can lavish their villagers with the most valuable items, and so they should! The more expensive an item of furniture is, the more friendship points will be rewarded. The value of the gift given will also prompt a villager to gift an item in return, depending on the item's resell value. Gifting an item that would get 2500+ bells at Nook's Cranny will make the villager give an item of furniture in return. Furthermore, receiving an item will reward bonus friendship points, the amount depending on the current level of friendship.

Give Them Their Favorite Song

huge repertoire of music is one of the many reasons Animal Crossing fans keep coming back for more. Songs are slightly more obtainable in New Horizons thanks to Nook Shopping, though the tried and true method is attending a K.K. Slider show. All villagers have a favorite K.K. song, which is the one that plays in their house if they own a music player. Gifting a villager's favorite song will reward 2 friendship points (3 if it is wrapped), so it's worth it to keep an eye out for their fave tune.

Don t Re-gift

Whether accidentally or on purpose, regifting an item to the villager who originally gifted it is not a stellar move. Villagers can actually remember what items they have given to the player and will display unique dialogue when the item is given back to them. Though it's not clear whether this lowers friendship points, the awkward situation is reason enough to avoid regifting.

Use Nook Plaza

One of the most useful fan-made tools for New Horizons has been , a website that includes generators for island ratings, style-specific outfits, and villager gift-giving. By simply typing in one's villager, the website will find all clothing in that villager's favorite style AND color. Fan-favorite 's favorite colors are black and grey, making the generator recommend a Gray Tam-o'-shanter.

Give Often

It's difficult to commit to a video game every day when life becomes busy and other responsibilities pile up, but the easiest and fastest way to earn a villager's coveted photo is to interact with them as much as possible, which ideally is every day. Realistically, any gift players can spare (that won't lead to hurt feelings) is recommended to speedrun a friendship with any islanders. Gifts usually raise points by 1-3, meaning it's the quantity and not the quality that will matter in the long run. Just spending ten minutes logging on to greet and shower villagers with gifts will pay off!

Consider Food Items

Want to give lots of gifts but don't want to overrun villagers with mismatched furniture or clashing clothes? Food items are usually a safe way to go, as food is never displayed in houses. The most common kind is fruit, but thanks to the October update, pumpkins work great, too. Wrapping food items help boost points, but the most important part about this trick is that it won't upset the status quo if a villager has a pristine wardrobe or their original furniture on display.

Consider How They Decorate

Analyzing and understanding the AI of a game is no easy task, but it's safe to say that villagers have elements of randomness/preferences that help them feel unique and less like simple programs. Villagers not only choose random activities to partake in during the day such as exercising or snacking, but they can rotate the furniture they've been gifted in and out of their home. Players may visit one day to find that certain items are on display while others aren't. Luckily, this doesn't mean that the furniture is gone, otherwise furniture would be obliterated whenever a villager decided to craft a DIY. Keep in mind what furniture your tends to rotate in and out.

Be Aware Of Events Or Holidays

If there's a special calendar event going on in the Animal Crossing world, this may interfere with gift-giving, albeit usually temporarily. When a competition such as a Fishing Tourney is occurring, gifts cannot be given to villagers until after the conclusion of the tourney at 6 PM. For events centered around item-giving such as , the player must dress up as Jack to be able to give candy to villagers on the island. For villagers inside their houses, however, the player must dress up in a scary before the villager will give them any candy, making normal gift-giving impossible during special events.

Be Mindful of Gift Size

When it comes to furniture and decorations, a villager doesn't have nearly the amount of space that the player can achieve with their house upgrades. This means that large furniture is less likely to be displayed than smaller items that can fit onto a villager's existing table(s). Furthermore, villagers are usually more likely to replace the furniture that they already own rather than add new pieces. If a villager owns a 1x2 item such as the dresser seen above, receiving another 1x2 furniture item will most likely be used to replace the dresser instead of taking up more space in the house.

Don t Forget Their Birthday

A birthday gift is always more special than a normal, everyday gift, and the increased range of friendship points prove it! Giving a villager an expensive gift on their birthday (such as fossils/bugs/fish worth 2000+ bells) can reward 5 friendship points, and wrapping paper increases this to a total of 8. Conversely, giving garbage on their birthday can lead to a whopping loss of 5 friendship points, helpful if the player wants to torment their villager.
