Evangelion Is Hitting English Blu-ray For The First Time Ever

Hideaki Anno's genre-defying (and genre-defining) opus is finally coming to Blu-ray in English-speaking territories. That said, there's a catch. It took a while, but here we are. Neon Genesis Evangelion, Hideaki Anno's genre-defying (and genre-defining) opus is finally coming to Blu-ray in English-speaking territories. That said, there's a catch. It's only available in the UK. Yes, in a move that surprises anyone who hasn't been following the fraught history of localizing Evangelion, this new release won't be coming from a US distributor. It makes sense, considering the turmoil the series tends to find itself in over here. ADV and Gainax had a notoriously complicated relationship . Meanwhile, Anno's Khara has been stringent in any translation of their work, following of Evangelion 3.33 in Baltimore. Evangelion and American localization don't mix, historically - at least on the corporate side - and it's a miracle that the Netflix launch went as well as it did. THEGAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY Well, outside of that horrid translation, but that's neither here nor there. We've heard less tell of complications with UK releases, however, which is likely why Anime Limited has been given the greenlight to put the series out next year. There aren't many details on what their release will entail, but considering the monumental nature of the IP, one would imagine that they'll spare no expense at putting out the definitive edition of the set. The set will include all 26 episodes, Death & Rebirth, and End of Evangelion. While, yeah, it's a bit of a bummer that this isn't coming to America, it's a good sign. Blu-ray masters of the show have only been available inside Japan, and those were untranslated. Now, this set will mark the first time they're in English. No word if the Netflix dub (or the superior ADV dub, for that matter,) will be included with this release. Importing this set is sure to cost a pretty penny, and you'll have to have a Region-Free BD player to actually watch the thing. Still, this is pretty great news, and hopefully it leads to an eventual American release at some point.
