One Developer Says CPU Will Be The Real Next-Gen Game Changer

SSDs are great, but you know what's better? Raw processing power, according to the developer for Scorn. via Microsoft XBX CPU The developer for Scorn doesn’t think that solid-state hard drives are all that big of a deal, and the real game-changer for next-gen consoles is the CPU. Solid-state hard drives have been around for a while on PC providing nearly instantaneous load times for many games. Consoles haven’t benefited from this technology as solid-state drives were too expensive when the current generation of consoles was introduced, so they stuck with older magnetic disc models. , promising those same instant load times. And while we’re excited for that to happen, Scorn director Ljubomir Peklar is even more excited for the . THEGAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY Speaking to , Peklar played down the importance of SSDs and expressed his excitement for the many teraflops of computational power set to arrive later this winter. "Everyone is touting the SSD as the next big thing, and yes SSDs will help a lot with loading and moving assets, but the biggest culprit that is creating problems in the current generation is the CPU. That's where the biggest difference compared to current generation will come from." Scorn is an atmospheric horror game that takes inspiration from the art of H.R Giger. Peklar said that the 's power will allow his game to run at specs that were previously reserved for PC users. "We didn't [want to bring Scorn to current-gen consoles] because we want our game to be played at 60FPS. That would be close to impossible without big sacrifices. Next-gen is about responsiveness, smoothness, and a lot less time-wasting. The problem with these features is that they are not easy to sell in videos or screenshots."
