If you're a fan of Magic The Gathering's Commander, you'll definitely benefit from using these awesome new cards from 2020. Every year, one of the most highly anticipated Magic: The Gathering product is the annual release of new pre-constructed Commander decks. These decks are frequently praised for their excellent value and their ability to be viably played upon purchase, whilst still providing space for a player to customize and upgrade the deck. This year's soon to be released Commander decks are no exception, and are chock full of powerful new cards that are likely going to see lasting play in the Commander format. So today we're going to delve into the best new cards Commander 2020 has to offer! THEGAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY

Call The Coppercoats and Curious Herd

Call the Copper Coats and Curious Herd are white and green instants respectively that each possess similar albeit useful abilities. Costing three and four mana respectively, Call the Coppercoats creates and amount of 1/1 equal to the amount of creatures under an opponents control, while Curious Herd creates a number of 3/3 tokens equal to the number of artifacts under an opponents control. Each of these cards can create an army out of thin air, possessing instant speed that allows these cards to serve the use of a combat trick.

Netherborn Altar

A core mechanic of the Commander format is the existence of "Commander Tax." As Commanders are cast from the Command Zone rather than one's hand, if a commander is removed from play, for each time it was recast, that creature's controller must pay an additional two mana. Netherborn Alter is an that allows Commander Tax to be mitigated at the expense of one's life. Tapping to put a soul counter on itself, this altar can put a commander from the command zone into its owner's hand at the cost of three life for each counter on it.

Deflecting Swat

Deflecting Swat by Izzy Some of the strongest cards in Magic's history are capable of being cast for zero mana. Each of the decks of Commander 2020 come with an instant that may be cast for free as long as its controller's commander is in play. The red representative of this cycle of cards, Deflecting Swat is a potent instant that allows its caster to change the target of target spell or ability. This is a tricky card that can interfere with opponents' plans out of nowhere, redirecting removal to player's own creatures or allowing the caster to redirect beneficial aura's onto their own creatures.

Verge Rangers

White is often noted in Commander for its lack of mana ramp, and its inability to reliably access lands. Verge Rangers is a creature that is definitely a step in the right direction for white's interaction with lands. A 3/3 with first strike for three mana, Verge Rangers allows its controller to look at the top card of their library at any time. Furthermore, as long as an opponent controls more lands than Verge Ranger's owner, that player may play lands from the top of their library, allowing more consistent land access for white.

Nesting Grounds

Nesting Grounds is an incredibly unique utility land that allows for numerous fun interactions in Commander. Capable of tapping for a colorless mana, the appeal of Nesting Grounds comes in the form of its second ability. For the cost of one mana, Nesting Grounds can be tapped to move a counter of any type from one permanent to another. This can be used in countless ways such as removing ice counters from the card, Thing in the Ice, or removing soul counters from the previously mentioned Netherborn Altar.

Dredge The Mire

Commander is a format that is rife with decks that seek to use their graveyards in a variety of ways. Dredge The Mire is a black sorcery for four mana that is capable of taking advantage of opponents graveyards. Upon being cast, each opponent chooses a creature in their graveyard. Those creatures are then put under the control of the spell's caster. This means that for four mana, this spell is capable of putting four creatures directly into play.

Flawless Maneuver

White's representative from the incredible cycle of instants that may be cast for free if their controller's commander is in play, Flawless Maneuver has a great deal in common with the spell, Teferi's Protection. Flawless Maneuver's effect is straightforward, providing each creature under it's owner's control with indestructible. This allows this spell's caster to make any board wipe completely one-sided in their favor without needing to spend any mana.

Manascape Refractor

One of the most popular types of card types to use in the commander format are artifacts. Providing numerous forms of utility such as the ability to tap for additional mana, one would be hard-pressed to find a commander deck that does not contain a "mana-rock" such as Sol Ring. Manascape Refractor is a flexible artifact that for three mana, possesses all activated abilities of all lands in play. This means that is capable of tapping for any color that lands in play can produce, as well as gaining the abilities of utility lands such as Maze of Ith.

Deadly Rollick

One of the most notable removal spells in recent history, Deadly Rollick is a spell that is sure to make a notable impact on the Commander format moving forward. A black instant that can be cast for zero mana as long as its caster controls their commander, Deadly Rollick can exile any target creature. This is by and large the most efficient means of putting a permanent end to a problematic creature in the Commander format, and one would be hard-pressed to find a deck capable of containing this spell that wouldn't want to.

Fierce Guardianship

Fierce Guardianship is similar to the previous entry on our list, and the blue representative of the previously mentioned cycle of instants that may be cast for free if one control's their commander. Upon being cast, Fierce Guardianship is capable of countering target non-creature spells. Due to its cost reduction clause, there are numerous instances in the Commander format in which this card is equivalent to the iconic and impactful Force of Will.
