Fallout 4 Every Permanent Companion Ranked

There are a lot of great Fallout 4 companions that permanently aid you in your journey. Here's a look at every one of them, ranked. Fallout 4 was released to mixed reception, as for every aspect the game improved, there was one it completely butchered. Even the many characters inhabiting the Commonwealth suffered from this mediocrity. While the game introduced many memorable characters, the streamlined design still took its toll on them. But as shallow as their personalities or quests may be, these recruitable allies are still an asset to the world, and so, these are the 13 base-game companions of Fallout 4, ranked. THEGAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY

Dogmeat

Our canine companion returns! Unfortunately this time around, he's also among the weakest companions. Dogmeat has no personality outside of "cute and loyal," and without a , cute just doesn't cut it. Though, unlike previous games, our canine companion can wear armor to boost his defenses -- a boost he needs badly, given his low hit points and odd stats. But his attacks are still restrained to biting, meaning he can't do much damage. So, while it's nearly impossible to miss his location in-game, players should still probably pass on this pooch.

Strong

Strong is the only recruitable Super in Fallout 4, but unlike his predecessors, Strong is an extremely weak character. Not in a physical sense -- definitely not, given his bulky stats and combat skills -- but rather in personality. We don't know who Strong was before he became a Super Mutant, and frankly, there's also not much that distinguishes him from other Mutants, being a typical shoot-first-ask-questions-never brute. A perfect fit for more evilly-inclined Sole Survivors, but less so for anyone else. So if players want a tank with anger-management issues, go rescue this big guy from Trinity Towers. Or not.

Cait

Cait can be found in the Combat Zone, a semi-willing participant in the all-out slaughter ring, and she has the sort of personality to match such brutality. She's a harsh, violent person with quite a few addictions, all to hide a rather bleak backstory. One that's an unfortunate dime-a-dozen in the apocalypse, and one that, while she's not proud of, she's also not seeking redemption from, so it's best if players not try. As for her stats, she's only average at combat, an oddity given her starting location. But she does have a special perk in lockpicking, so for more thieving Sole Survivors, she's a perfect match.

Curie

This modified Miss Nanny can be found in Vault 81, rescued, and recruited during its questline. But just because her home Vault may have an interesting background, doesn't mean she has one. She's a medical robot at her core, and so a medic she remains, even if players turn her into a synth later on. In her regular robotic form, she's a poor combatant, though as a synth we can customize armor and weapons... not that she'll fight much, being a far better healer than warrior. If Sole Survivors want a technical genius and team healer, then maybe Curie is what they're looking for. If not, there's better AI ahead.

X6-88

X6-88 is an Institute Courser, assigned to players during said faction's questline. But even with his human appearance, X6 can come across as more monotonous than many other machines throughout the Commonwealth, though he does, fortunately, have a sardonic personality underneath his cold-blooded-killer coding. And indeed, having him as an ally means players will be packing some serious firepower in a fight, given his high stats and aggressive nature. Just try not to get on the Institute's bad side, because he won't hesitate to turn his weapons on players. Though given the nature of the main story, it's best to be prepared. X6-88, as an ally or enemy, won't go down without a fight.

Codsworth

is unique among Fallout 4's companions, given that he was the Sole Survivor's personal pre-war robot. He has history with our characters to back up his charming personality, and this shared backstory of loss gives him as much motivation as it does us. An empathetic character indeed, and a decent ally to boot. His stats are average, and being a machine, he can't have his weapon or armor customized, but it also means he has higher resilience and can do as much damage as he can take. For those who want him as a companion, he'll be extremely easy to find, waiting at our old home, our eternally faithful butler.

Deacon

As reconnaissance, Deacon is a master of disguise, stealth, and deception. Makes for a rather comedic companion and adds a bit of lightheartedness to the apocalypse, but for more serious Sole Survivors, he can become rather grating. Plus, his deceptive personality puts even his extensive, tragic backstory and motivations into question. His stats are all average, meaning he's okay in combat, though again, his strengths lay mostly in stealth. A perfect ally for sneaky players who use combat as a last resort, but if a Sole Survivor's loyalty lays with the enemies of the Railroad, be prepared to out-sneak him, because he'll be as hostile as his fellow synth liberators.

Piper Wright

Piper's been a snoop ever since she was young. But she's also a simple Commonwealth survivor who just wants to protect her sister, wants to know the truth, and wants her fellow denizens to know it, too. The stereotypical, nosey reporter shtick can get a bit tiresome, especially when she frames almost every interaction with anyone as an interview. But her stats are all on the better side, especially once she's given customized weapons and armor, so she's as useful on the battlefield as she is in the papers, and plays a valuable role in many throughout the game. So, take a swing by Publick Occurrences, and don't be afraid to get to know the press.

Preston Garvey

Preston is a golden-hearted man that has spawned many a meme about Settlements. He's a loyal, senior officer of the Commonwealth Minutemen, and while he does have his own moral code, he's, fortunately, an ally that can coexist alongside the other Commonwealth factions, depending on which path the Sole Survivor takes. His stats fall on the better side of average, and again, equippable armor and weapons can easily push him from average to incredible. Just be sure to take his Laser Musket away. As much as he loves that gun, muskets - laser or not - just don't have a place in a world that's full of Fatmans and Flamers.

Robert MacCready

MacCready is a lovely callback to Fallout 3, being a former resident of Little Lamplight, turned renegade raider seeking redemption. Players can provide him that redemption if they so choose, and he, in turn, can provide players with a valuable companion. Like most human companions, his stats are relatively even, if not somewhat mediocre, but he more than makes up for it with his stealth and thieving skills. So for the more pickpocket-type players, MacCready will make a wonderful partner, be it in battle or in crime.

John Hancock

This thrill-seeking certainly makes himself unforgettable during players' first meeting with him, shiving another NPC who was threatening us. And he certainly has a rough, wild history to back up his bold and brash actions. But behind his irradiated appearance and chem addictions is a laid-back and good man who cares for the citizens of the Commonwealth. In battle, his stats make him a good fighter, though his hit points are somewhat lacking, given his ghoulification. But nothing some good armor and a few chems can't fix, right?

Paladin Danse

This loyal Paladin, like Macready before him, also grew up in the Capital Wasteland. But unlike Macready, his childhood wasn't all it seemed. It wasn't even his childhood at all, as players can find out during the Brotherhood's main questline. Not all is as it seems to Danse, and beneath his stern exterior, he's a rich character. And being a paladin, he comes with decent stats and a tanking set of power armor to boot, meaning he's an amazing asset to have on the battlefield.

Nick Valentine

A synth with the memories of Nick Valentine, he's truly come to embody the memories of the pre-war detective, transforming him from man to machine. A sleuth with a heart of gold, but willing to bend the rules to do what's right, and all while having an identity crisis? Makes for wonderful drama, and a wonderful character. His technical nature also means he has the same natural resilience as all robots, plus boosted stats and a special perk in hacking terminals, to boot. Yes, Nick Valentine is a wonderful ally, and undoubtedly among the best companions to have around the Commonwealth.
