Pokémon The D&D Alignments Of Every Major Sword & Shield Character

Most people would consider the Dungeons & Dragon's moral alignment of Pokémon characters to be obvious, but Sword & Shield would have you surprised. The in are an interesting mix, but one huge question about them is still left unanswered. That question is in regards what these characters’ alignments would be if they were transferred into the Dungeons & Dragons ruleset. Since we’re talking about a Pokémon game, most of these characters will probably be good aligned, but some gamers might be surprised where characters lie along the chaotic/lawful spectrum. This list will not only take into account how these characters are portrayed in the game, but will also look at how they behave in other media sources – specifically the Pokémon anime and manga series. THEGAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY

Leon Neutral Good

Leon is the Pokémon Champion in the Galar region, and the older brother to the player’s main rival Hop. He is obviously good aligned; he cares a great deal for the people and Pokémon of the Gala region. His overly confident personality and tendency to be a little self-centered brings him close to being neutral instead of good, but with the good far outweighs the bad (or neutral). He doesn’t seem to make a lot of long-term plans – and/or stick to them. He also has a legendarily awful sense of direction; which isn’t chaotic in and of itself, but it does attract chaos.

Hop Chaotic Neutral

is the younger brother of Leon and serves as the player’s rival in Pokémon: Sword & Shield. Hop seems to have only two major motivations for everything that he does. He wants to be seen as at least as great a Pokémon trainer as Leon – if not greater. Hop also wants to become the Pokémon Champion of Galar. Striving to achieve these goals has caused Hop to be unpredictable and willing to ignore aspects of the social contract. He is not evil, but it’s a bit of a stretch to call him good as well.

Sonia Chaotic Good

is the granddaughter of Professor Magnolia, and she is also one of the leading experts on the history of the Galar region. Sonia might be the easiest of the major characters to assign a D&D alignment to. Two words commonly used to describe Sonia in the game, anime, and manga are “helpful” and “friendly.” This helpfulness and friendliness seem to be genuinely altruistic with Sonia. She does, however, have moments of quick mood changes, and tends to change her personality depending on with whom she is interacting. Sonia’s best fit for a D&D alignment would seem to be chaotic good.

Chairman Rose Chaotic Neutral

is the head of the Marco Cosmos organization; which serves as the belligerent force in Pokémon: Sword & Shield. Marco is not evil (per se); he is simply misguided by his beliefs. Chairman Rose has been described as “reckless,” and his actions in the game certainly make that an empirical description. Due to his actions, the Galar region is almost destroyed during the course of the game. This was done for a good cause (in his mind), but as the old saying goes, “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.”

Oleana Chaotic Evil

Oleana is Chairman Rose’s assistant, and one of the more villainous characters to ever appear in a Pokémon game. Using people as pawns in her schemes, and subsequently abandoning them after she gets what she wants, is a character trait of Oleana’s that cannot be labelled anything other than evil. Oleana is also prone to violent mood swings that make Sonia look even-tempered, and has a habit of presenting a vicious demeanor when provoked in even the slightest of ways. Oleana is something not seen much in a Pokémon game – a truly chaotic evil character.

Marnie True Neutral

Marnie is the sister of the game’s seventh gym leader, Piers. She is also a leading figure of Team Yell. Marnie is perhaps the most difficult major character in Pokémon: Sword & Shield to assign a D&D alignment. This difficulty stems from her stoic, emotionless demeanor. When she does show emotion it is usually anger or frustration. She helps the player during the game, but she is also associated with Team Yell – who is hardly considered good. She cares for her fans, but is also slightly troubled by her fame. Marnie’s alignment is probably true neutral, but more insight into her personality might indicate an alignment that is more neutral good than true neutral.

Bede Lawful Neutral

Bede is another rival the player will encounter in Sword & Shield. He is sponsored by Chairman Rose, and becomes an apprentice of , the fifth gym leader. Bede is not a very pleasant person. He is described as “rude,” and most players probably agree with that assessment. He doesn’t seem particularly evil; he’s just not a very nice person and is extremely driven to prove his worth as a Pokémon trainer. If one thing can be said about Bede’s personality it’s that it is constant – he treats everyone equally (bad). Bede is another difficult character to assign an alignment for, but he seems closest to lawful neutral.

Professor Magnolia Lawful Good

Professor Magnolia is the “Professor” of the Galar region. Her area of research focuses on the Dynamax forms of Pokémon. Magnolia is always shown being genuinely friendly and helpful – she makes sure the player feels welcome and helps her/him when she can. She is someone that seems to be a “stickler” for the rules, and can get stern with others when she feels they are acting inappropriately. Professor Magnolia is also shown being very even tempered and not prone to being capricious in any way. Until more evidence is given that might indicate otherwise, her D&D alignment is lawful good.

Mustard Lawful Good

Mustard is featured in the Isle of Armor DLC expansion. This old man was the Pokémon Champion of the Galar region before Leon. Now Mustard runs a dojo on the Isle of Armor, where he teaches young Pokémon trainers. Although he is said to have been hot tempered in his youth Mustard is now regarded as a kind old man who wishes to help young Pokémon trainers. Mustard is also known to be quite strict when it comes to following the rules and gets upset when someone breaks them – especially during a Pokémon match. Mustard is almost certainly lawful good.

Klara and Avery Chaotic Neutral

Klara and Avery are the player’s rival in Sword & Shield. Klara appears in Sword and Avery in Shield. Klara is quick to put up an innocent demeanor, but in battle she will do anything to ensure victory – including less than honorable actions. She seems to delight in fooling people into thinking she is sweet and nice; while in reality she is quite ruthless. Avery’s personality is much like Klara’s, but he is reported to have “mellowed” out a bit while apprenticing for Mustard. This has supposedly made him “nicer;” however, he still has a reputation for being a bit dishonorable during matches. Klara and Avery are both chaotic neutral. If Avery continues to “mellow” his alignment he might switch to chaotic good one day.
