Fallout 4 10 Things You Didn t Know About The Yangtze Submarine

Fallout 4 has plenty of diverse and interesting locations to explore, including the Yangtze submarine. This is what players might not know about it! The wasteland of Commonwealth is filled to the brim with well-designed, interesting locations that provide more lore and overall background to what went down before and after the nuclear bomb dropped. All it takes is for the Sole Survivor to resist the urge to fast travel and walk around, scavenging and exploring, to come across some of these hidden gems. The Yangtze Submarine, located off the coast of Boston, is one of such locations. It's unlikely the player will come across it by chance, since it's located deep in the waters and is hard to get to by foot. However, a quick chat with Donny Kowalski, a child looking out to the sea, will pinpoint the location of where the Yangtze is lodged. Here's what players should know about this ancient sub stuck in the depths of Boston's harbor. THEGAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY

Perfectly Hidden Location

As already mentioned, finding the Yangtze by chance is highly unlikely unless the Sole Survivor decides to go for a swim in the radiation filled coastal waters. Instead, the best way to get to it is to use the jet packs of a suit after talking to Donny Kowalski located by the Shamrock Taphouse. Even with console commands that reveal all locations on the map, the Yangtze's location isn't actually revealed. However, just getting to the Shamrock by the harbor brings the player within visual range of the vessel.

The Ghoul Whale

The Yangtze is absolutely ancient, and its presence isn't exactly well-known to the people of the Commonwealth. Due to this, most people who spot it from afar will try to make sense of the sight in strange ways, much like Donny who claims it to be a sea monster. Some for example will sometimes be heard gossiping about a ghoul whale swimming in the harbor of Boston. While this could be something completely unrelated, it's possible they're referencing the giant vessel by the harbor.

Peculiar Design

Many fans have done their best to showcase the design of the Yangtze using cheats and commands to turn the water completely clear. The submarine actually looks very peculiar compared to most traditional submarines, which is why it has gained some attention as a location. One of the biggest differences is the fact that it seems to be missing most of its lower stern, which is unusual. However, this could also make the Yangtze much faster as a vessel, so it might be an intentional part of its design.

American Interior

Obviously, the Yangtze is a Chinese submarine which has been stationed in the harbor of Boston for quite some time now. Having come all the way from China, one would imagine the submarine would carry a part of its native culture within. However, it becomes very evident as soon as the submarine's entered, that this isn't the case. Writing on the vessel is all in English, and similarly any of the items found inside all are American. The most glaring detail is definitely a bottle of Nuka-Cola Quantum which can be found inside the sub.

Main Antagonist Of The War

The Yangtze might not seem like anything special, but it's role in the war that took place 200 years ago might actually be more significant than most players realize. The Yangtze came equipped with a bunch of nuclear warheads, and now only one remains. This most likely means that it was in fact this very submarine that caused the explosion in the Commonwealth, seen at the beginning of the game. The sub and its crew would also be responsible for the existence of what's now known as the as well, making it the only remaining presence of a wartime enemy.

A Mysterious Skeleton

The Yangtze's crew has met a very unfortunate end onboard the vessel. Most have been driven crazy through radiation, turned into feral ghouls that will attack the player on sight. However, there's one skeleton in particular that seems peculiar. Found chained in one of the bunk beds, the skeleton is that of an American soldier, which may have been kidnapped and held hostage, as well as tortured, onboard the submarine when it first arrived to Boston.

Captain Zao s Age

The only surviving and somewhat coherent inhabitant of the Yangtze is its leading operative, . He'll first greet the Sole Survivor when they enter the submarine, and although he's well on his way to ghoulification, he's sane enough to speak to the Sole Survivor. What's cool about Zao is that he's among those few characters in the game that know what the Sole Survivor once lived through. Just like them and the representative, they were alive prior to the war and have lived for 200 years. He's perhaps one of the few who understand the pain of the Sole Survivor's loss.

The Submariner s Uniform

So, what use is it to actually enter the submarine? There's some loot and experience points to be gained, as with all , but perhaps most importantly the player can get their hands on a unique set of clothing: the submariner's uniform. The uniform doesn't have interesting stats, but it does look cool. In order to get it, however, it needs to be pickpocketed from captain Zao or looted off his dead corpse if he's killed. The hat, however, can also be looted from the first mate.

Zao s Sword

If killing captain Zao sounds like a terrible, heartless thing to do, not to worry because there are other ways to get properly rewarded by the quest that takes place inside the sub. Once Zao is helped by the Sole Survivor, they can ask for a hefty reward. With high enough charisma, the player can get their hands on Zao's sword, which is a cool, unique designed like a traditional Chinese sword. It's not the best melee item in the game, but boy does it look nice!

The Sub That Never Leaves

Although the main point of the quest involving the sub is to ensure that Zao can actually leave Boston's harbor and return back home to China, the submarine never leaves the harbor, probably due to game design limitations. That said, once the quest is completed the Sole Survivor can use the sub as a makeshift base of sorts, since storing items into it is actually possible.
