Rumor Overwatch 2 Is Currently Being Developed By Blizzard

Blizzard is rumored to be working on Overwatch 2. Via: Portugal-tech.pt is rumored to be working on , according to a by Kotaku. Nothing has been officially confirmed by Blizzard on the matter, as the news comes from an anonymous source that states that the game is both in development and expected to be formally announced at BlizzCon 2019 this November. The sources informed Kotaku that the game would feature a PvE mode that could be likened to the series. This would not be a surprising form of gameplay to focus on considering the popularity of Overwatch's seasonal events. Long-time fans of the franchise may also recall that Overwatch began its life as a completely different game. Originally, it was an MMO until Blizzard cancelled the project and recycled the assets to become the game we know today. THEGAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY Via: Inverse.com If the rumor turns out to be true, it will require some pivoting for the recently established Overwatch League and the competitive scene in general. On the one hand, competitive shooters like in order to maintain all of the competitive players in one game. On the other hand, Blizzard has two competitive fields for both and Starcraft II, and fighting games also change frequently with sequels. Still, it does feel like it would be too soon after the installment of the league to be viable. Perhaps instead, the answer lies in a mix between the two ideas of keeping the core gameplay relatively untouched for competitive mode, but updating the framework on which the game is built to facilitate the creation of a PvE story mode. Jeff Kaplan was clear in stating that since Overwatch was built from scratch, implementing PvE events has often been challenging and slower than anticipated. In this way, the project would not be a direct sequel, but either a paid upgrade or perhaps a free one, though costs would need to be recouped from somewhere. Above all, an upgrade would do one thing that a sequel could not, but is of significant importance: players would keep their cosmetic items. Players have purchased or earned countless loot boxes over the years, and the idea of starting over in a sequel may be extremely frustrating. Such a move would likely freeze loot box sales for the current game entirely, since players can see the next game approaching, which would result in a loss of revenue for Blizzard. Upgrading Overwatch would instead make everyone happy by combining the best of both worlds. For now, this is all speculation, but if there is any truth to the rumor, we are sure to begin hearing more whispers as BlizzCon 2019 approaches in November.
