Sonic The Hedgehog 10 Games To Play For The Story Ranked

Sonic the Hedgehog might not be primarily known for its stories, but some of the Blue Blur's games are worth checking out for their narratives. ’s movie debut was recently released on Blu-Ray and DVD. Video games always go through a significant transition when translated to any medium, as the former allows for various ways to tell a story with very different pacing. Conversely, movies usually stick to a more linear method of storytelling. For those coming in fresh from Sonic's theatrical debut, what's next? Well, why not see how storytelling takes hold in the world the blue blur originated in? Those venturing into the world of the Hedgehog for the first time need not worry, as Sonic’s sport very little backstory, to begin with. The stories in the games are self-contained with very little connection between them, although that won’t get in the way of what makes them entertaining. From quotable moments to cool set pieces, here are the Sonic stories worth checking out. THEGAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY

Sonic Lost World

Sonic and Tails venture to the Lost Hex, home of a race of demon-like creatures known as the Zeti. Dr. Eggman puts six of them, referred to as the Deadly Six, under his control as an asset for world domination. This includes harnessing enough energy from Earth to power his army. Eggman loses control of the Zeti after an event caused by Sonic. This forms an unreliable alliance between Sonic, Tails, and Eggman. Things quickly spiral out of control, testing Sonic and Tails’ friendship. Eggman grows frustrated after he is left with next to nothing to work with. Meanwhile, the Zeti start utilizing Eggman’s tools to destroy Earth.

Sonic Forces

While Sonic’s most recent adventure is difficult to recommend, it is a chance to see Sonic’s cast working together in an unusual setting. Sonic’s friends band together to fight for survival in roles they're not ready for. This also includes a self-created character that joins the resistance against Eggman. Meanwhile, Eggman joins forces with a new nemesis called Infinite. Never mind the part where Sonic's imprisoned for months and shows no adverse effects from it. Or that Tails is a coward. Or that classic Sonic is there for no reason. Or that Knuckles is a war criminal. Or that the new enemy Infinite disappears towards the end. Admittedly, Sonic Forces' story has some issues.

Sonic Colors

One of the more lighthearted Sonic stories, Eggman stations an Amusement Park in space to make up for the misdeeds he’s caused over the years. It doesn’t take long for Sonic and Tails to discover the amusement park's true secret. Within it is a front for harnessing energy from surrounding planets. Sonic and Tails meet up with alien lifeforms known as Wisps who are trying to warn the duo about their dangers. Eggman's hidden generators and factories also double as enslavement camps for the alien creatures.

Sonic Battle

The 4 player beat-em-up on Advance features a story mode broken into episodes. Each one centers around a different character that expands upon Emerl, with the Gizoid obtaining abilities as the game progresses. Dr. Eggman tries to unearth the Gizoid for world domination purposes, as his great-grandfather discovered Emerl and his potential. With this newfound knowledge, Eggman tries to force Emerl to obey him; however, he finds the Gizoid to be unresponsive, even after absorbing a Chaos Emerald. Eggman abandons Emerl at the beach, although it is shortly discovered by Sonic. The robot continues to “Link” with other characters while growing a stronger conscience. Some characters look for ways to exploit his power, while others look for ways to destroy him as they recognize his potential as a weapon of destruction.

LEGO Dimensions

This is probably as close to a Sonic the Hedgehog movie as fans are ever likely to get. When used with LEGO Dimensions, the figure features a unique story set in the world of Sonic. The story ties into the story of LEGO Dimensions but works well enough on its own. Developer Travelers Tales is no stranger when it comes to Sonic, as two of their previous titles include Sonic 3D Blast and the infamous racer Sonic R. There’s nothing here that’s canon, but there’s plenty of humor and references packed throughout. Even those not familiar with Sonic will get something out of the short plot.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles

Out of the entire classic series, Sonic 3's unique storytelling stands out among the rest. This game marks the first introduction to Knuckles the Echidna. Sonic and Tails venture through Angel Island to uncover Dr. Robotnik’s scheme. Many games during this era relied on players to read the manual to understand the story of what’s going on. With no dialogue and the players always in control, the character interactions have to show how Knuckles develops as a character. The three eventually form a new friendship after Eggman double-crosses Knuckles. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles form a new alliance to work together to defeat Eggman in the end.

Sonic & the Black Knight

The Sonic Storybook spinoffs put Sonic in a world with familiar-looking characters. Sonic faces off against a Black Knight that has taken over King Arthur’s kingdom of Camelot. The Black Knight holds Excalibur’s Scabbard, granting him immortality. Sonic must fight against the Knights of the Round Table and defeat the Black Knight to get it back. Even after doing that, does Sonic truly play the role of "the good guy?" Of the two storybook games, The Black Knight makes great use of the characters. The story also ends on a darker note than the usual fare of Sonic stories and genuinely tests Sonic's carefree attitude.

Sonic Adventure 2

The sequel to Sonic Adventure featured two linear story paths and was the first mainline game where you also got to play as the bad guys. Either save the world or conquer it. Eggman teams up with the then-new character Shadow the Hedgehog. Together they plot to take over the Earth with a mysterious superweapon in the space colony ARK. Sonic struggles to clear his identity as Shadow wreaks havoc through non-San Francisco; on the other side, Shadow struggles to discover his true purpose. Meanwhile, Dr. Eggman learns the true secret of his great grandfather's legacy.

Sonic Unleashed

The world of Sonic returns to a lighter tone with a solo adventure for Sonic. Eggman's latest experiment harnesses the power of the Chaos Emeralds ripped away from Sonic. The world has split into pieces and awakens a being from within. Sonic also falls prey to a side effect of Eggman’s plan that transforms him into a Werehog that strips him of his characteristic traits. He also makes a new friend, Chip, who lost his memories. Sonic must explore the world to help piece it back together and find out Chip's identity. HUB worlds return with new denizens to meet and greet with their own stories to tell.

Sonic Adventure

After the SEGA ' lifespan ended, it was a long wait for the next big Sonic title. When the game finally arrived, it was the Hedgehog’s first proper outing in 3D. This story-focused adventure is a hybrid between an action platformer and RPG. HUB worlds with citizens to talk to separate the levels, with non-playable characters also having their own stories that unfold as the story progresses. Dr. Eggman has unearthed the ancient god Chaos and is looking to transform Station Square into his own personal city, Robotnikland. Each character is given their own path, with the six playable characters each presenting their own part of the tale. Eventually, all characters meet up at the climax of the story for a grand finale.
