Powerful 15 Facts That Make Azula From Avatar The Last Airbender A Bit Much
We all know Azula is a powerful villain but she's much scarier than many realize. Here are 15 scary facts about the Avatar: The Last Airbender icon. via: imdb.com, aer-dna.tumblr.com Avatar: The Last Airbender really upped the stakes during its second season when it introduced Azula, the princess of the fire nation, and the sister of Zuko. She changed the game for everything and really gave our heroes a run for their money (and their lives). Azula is a great example of a complex and terrifying villain. She’s talented in firebending and combat, her strategies are impressive and effective, and she’s a master of manipulation. Basically, if Azula couldn’t do something herself (which was rare) she got someone else to do it and made them think it was their idea, to begin with. But there’s more to her than that. Behind her mask of control also lies a stressed, twisted, almost lonely girl, who doesn’t know how to act like a normal teenager and just wanted her mother to not look at her like a monster. She does show to have some vulnerabilities, and her defeat, in the end, is not due to someone else, but as a result of the degeneration of her mind. She’s endlessly fascinating, rather sympathetic, but also extremely unnerving. You can’t deny that Azula is a rather scary character, mostly in that a lot of the things she does are subtle. She’s all about control and doing things on her terms, but she’s also flexible and can adapt easily to the enemy tactics. She often stayed one step ahead of the main heroes throughout all of season 2 and most of season 3. You just don’t want to mess with her. But how much do you know about Azula? She still has quite a few interesting secrets up her sleeve. So, here are 15 facts that make Azula even more terrifying and intimidating. Think we missed a few? Via: kelly1412.deviantart.com Azula is definitely one scary, powerful, firebender. Her strategy and fighting prowess is also nothing to be sneezed at. Throughout the events of the show, she proves to be quite the formidable opponent to our heroes and even some of the villains. But all of this gets even scarier when you take into account just how young Azula is. I think a lot of people forget that during the events of this show, Azula is only fourteen. She’s a young teenager who, in normal circumstances, should’ve been concerned about school and making friends. Instead, she’s taking over countries, hunting down alleged traitors to the fire nation, and attempting to kill family members. When I was fourteen, my biggest worry was about how well I’d do on an upcoming math test. This girl was definitely doing bigger things. She s Not Just Cold
Via: tumblr.com, pinterest.com It’s no secret that Azula is cold and calculating, and has a rather ruthless streak. But it goes a bit further than that. There are several instances that show Azula has some sociopathic tendencies. She’s shown to not really care that much about others’ well-being, even those supposedly close to her. She often takes great pleasure in exercising control over others, and also in causing pain and death. We could argue that Azula is a victim of her incredibly dysfunctional family, and I think to a degree, that’s true. I think her father bears some responsibility for Azula’s twisted personality. But she was still showing signs of these tendencies even as a kid. Whether it’s the result of her father’s mentoring, or if Azula was just born without empathy, it’s hard to say. Her Convincing Tactics Are a Bit Excessive
Via: knowyourmeme.com (baldarek) Azula’s relationships with her friends Ty Lee and Mai are interesting, to say the least. The two seem to fear her just as much as they respect her. And this is evident when Azula is convincing Ty Lee to help her out in her latest scheme. Ty Lee first rejects Azula’s offer, saying she’s happy performing at the circus. But then during one of Ty Lee’s performances, Azula tries to turn up the heat, having it so Ty Lee is doing her routine over flames. Azula then promises that she’ll be at every performance. After that, Ty Lee conveniently has a change of heart and joins up with her. While it’s never said in words, Azula pretty much threatened to hurt Ty Lee if she didn’t join up with her. That’s subtle and incredibly messed up. Her Bending Has An Interesting Origin
Via: blue-ten.deviantart.com Do you know the story behind how Azula’s firebending abilities first manifested? Turns out it happened during a sibling squabble. And Zuko ended up bearing the brunt of Azula’s newfound abilities. It also showed just how much power and anger this little girl could hold. The story goes that Zuko took one of Azula’s dolls while they were fighting. In retaliation, Azula “accidently” set Zuko’s ponytail on fire. Apparently, Ozai was very happy to discover his daughter had such powerful abilities. But I don’t think poor Zuko appreciated being the subject of her anger. It’s kind of scary what she was willing to do to Zuko just because she was angry, even as a child. Apparently, you don’t want to tick this girl off, especially since now she can do much more than set your hair on fire. She s Definitely Crazy
Via: ennerei.tumblr.com, yagaminoue.deviantart.com Towards the end of the series, Azula’s mental health quickly declines to the point that she ends up suffering a psychotic break. Now, since the beginning of her introduction, Azula showed that she had master control over her emotions, to the point that she has been suspected of being sociopathic. She could even lie without Toph knowing. She was the epitome of control. But all of that changed when Ty Lee and Mai turned against her. What’s really crazy is that the symptoms Azula exhibits are classic symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia, including hallucinations and acute paranoia. Her friends’ betrayal was likely the trigger, and the stress of her becoming the leader of the fire nation probably didn’t help. What’s amazing is that even with her psychotic break, she’s still incredibly powerful and almost ends up killing Zuko and Katara. You Shouldn t Be Enjoying This Azula
Via: reddit.com The whole story behind Zuko’s scar is rather tragic and a bit horrifying. His own father burned his face in a duel that Zuko was forced to participate in as a result of speaking out against him. And this was done in front of a large group of people, like it was a spectacle. Even Iroh was forced to watch, though he looked away when Zuko was burned. But guess who didn’t look away? Yes, Azula was there too, and she watched the whole thing with a rather gleeful look on her face. What makes this even scarier is that Azula was likely around ten or eleven when this happened. So, she was essentially a child when she happily watched her father burn half of her brother’s face. I think that says volumes about her character. Master Of Manipulation
Via: comicvine.gamespot.com We can agree that Zuko is a teenager of many talents. He can also agree that he has more than a few weaknesses. And one of those is his sister, Azula. Azula knows all of Zuko’s insecurities and weak links, and she exploits them shamelessly. This lady may be skilled in physical fighting, but she’s also the master of the mind as well. Azula manipulates Zuko into doing what she wants all throughout the series, and even beyond. Even though Zuko knows what she’s doing, he still falls prey to her schemes, which is pretty impressive, since Zuko isn’t an idiot. This shows just how talented Azula is at reading people and manipulating them to do what she wants. You never know what she’s going to say, and that’s seriously scary. Talk About Taking Over The Throne
Via: azulera.deviantart.com How many fourteen-year-olds can you say have staged a coup d’etat and then taken over an entire kingdom? Well Azula did it, and she did it without breaking a sweat. So how did the girl pull it off? Easy, she used someone else. Azula did what she did best and helped the chief of the Dai Lee, a secret police force, take control of the Earth Kingdom. But then she turned the Dai Lee against their leader and became their leader instead. And she did this without having to fight anybody. It was all done through careful manipulation and intimidation. This is why Azula is such a threat to any high power, since she knows exactly when to strike, when to lay low, and when get someone else to do the dirty work. And she did all this as a teenager. This Sibling Rivalry Is Killing Me
Via: epicscifiart.wordpress.com Now, we know that there’s very little love lost between Azula and Zuko. The two took sibling rivalry to a whole new level. Both were jealous of each other since they were the favorites of the other parent, and that jealousy turned into bitterness. What makes this even more disturbing is that it’s turned murderous. If you think about it, Azula has actually tried to kill Zuko a few times. In the beginning when she was tracking him down to take him back to the fire nation, she didn’t seem to care whether he was dead or alive. Then during their final duel, she shoots lightning at Katara, knowing that Zuko will step in front of her and be unable to redirect it quickly. That bolt of lightning practically fried his insides and it was only thanks to Katara’s healing that he survived. This girl has tried to kill her own brother, and she’s proud of it. Cause We Got The Blue Fire
Via: infinity.deviantart.com There are quite a few unique things about Azula, even in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender. She can redirect lightning, which is a rare skill among firebenders, and her combat skills are impeccable. But what makes her stand out the most is her blue fire. While it’s definitely striking, did you know that blue flames are more dangerous than regular flames? Apparently, blue fire is the hottest type of fire, so Azula’s fire is much hotter, and much more dangerous and destructive than the average firebender’s flames. She’s the only firebender shown on the series to have blue flames. So if you were to get hit by her flames, you’d probably take a lot more damage. You know someone is dangerous when even their type of bending is considered more dangerous to other firebenders. These Two Have A Lot In Common
Via: que-hegan.deviantart.com, threshthesky.com Azula’s name is a bit unusual, though looking at her family, it’s not that out of place. When you’ve got names like Zuko, Ursa, Ozai, and Iroh, Azula feels like it would fit in alright. But Azula’s name didn’t come out of thin air. She’s actually named after her grandfather Azulon. While we don’t see him much in the series, what little we do see says quite a bit. For example, Azulon punishes Ozai for speaking against his brother, by telling him to kill his own son, Zuko. Something about how he should feel what Iroh felt, which is completely messed up. What’s worse is that Azula overheard this and acted like this was a perfectly reasonable thing. The fact that Azula seems to take after her grandfather quite a bit, not just in name but in personality as well, is a little frightening. She Stopped This Invasion In Its Tracks
Via: pinterest.com Remember the mid-season finale for season 3? Aang and his friends got together a mini army to invade the fire nation on the day of the solar eclipse. It was a good invasion that was carried out pretty well, and it should’ve worked. But there was one thing they didn’t count on: Azula. Azula got ahold of our heroes’ plans before and then prepared a counterattack. Essentially, she had Ozai leave the fire nation and drew in Aang and the others into a trap, stalling them long enough for the eclipse to pass and for the soldiers to regain their firebending. While Aang and most of the younger kids got away, many of their allies were taken prisoner. It was a pretty sound defeat for the Avatar and it was all thanks to one girl. This really showcases Azula’s talent for strategy since she was able to stop an invasion that should’ve worked. These Two Were Closer Than You Think
Via: hypercrabby.deviantart.com Azula’s and Zuko’s relationship is a strained one at best, and a murderous one at worst. Jealousy and parental favoritism pretty much tore these two apart. But did you know that when they were younger, they were actually pretty close? In fact, Azula adored Zuko when she was a little child. She would often go into his room and ask to sleep with him when she had a nightmare (Zuko grudgingly agreed). The two actually did play together a lot and did love each other. But Azula’s jealousy over the fact that their mom seemed to favor Zuko started to make her bitter. And since their father looked down on Zuko a lot, she started to do the same. It makes me wonder what would’ve happened if they kept their closeness as siblings. It probably would’ve made that final agni kai even more heartbreaking. She Didn t Have The Best Mentor
Via: jtd95.deviantart.com, dacommissioner.deviantart.com Since she was little, it was obvious that Ozai favored Azula over Zuko. Zuko even says that his father often told him that Azula was born lucky while he was lucky to have been born. Ozai likely appreciated the raw talent in Azula and praised her much more. I really do believe that a large part of Azula’s personality did come from her father’s twisted mentoring. Since he took her under his instruction, he not only taught her firebending, but his views on the world. We know that Ozai has little to no compassion and values strength and power above everything else. It would make sense that Azula would end up being the same way. He encouraged Azula’s sociopathic tendencies and raised her up to believe that everything she was doing was the correct choice and that anyone who disagreed should be destroyed. It’s pretty messed up. She Almost Destroyed Everything
Via: dementeddoorknob.blogspot.com The battle between Aang, Katara, Azula, and Zuko in the season 2 finale was a pretty intense one, and it showcased just how far all of these characters had come in their abilities, especially Aang and Katara. But the battle ended when Azula shot down Aang with lightning while he was in the Avatar State. Now, it’s never actually said, but the creators confirmed that Azula actually killed Aang at that moment. Katara managed to bring him back with the healing spirit water she had, but it was close. What’s really scary is that if Aang had stayed dead, if Katara couldn’t bring him back, then Azula would’ve broken the Avatar Cycle. If the Avatar is killed while in the Avatar State, the cycle is broken and the Avatar will be no more. For her to take down Aang while in his heightened state of power is impressive in itself. That fact that she was almost responsible for killing the Avatar forever is terrifying.
