Enough Already 25 Console Games Sequels Coming Soon That No One Asked For
These console video game sequels don't look great — so why are they making them at all. Gaming has always been an expensive medium, but additional zeroes continue to be scribbled at the end of price tags as developers try to one-up themselves. As a whole, the industry is growing at an rate, but the profit margin is not equally distributed between the different studios. Over the course of a year, a couple of titles monopolize an overpowering majority of the cash, so publishers tend to push brands that have proven capable of shifting units. A quick look at 2018's best selling games confirms that the vast majority are sequels or based on a pre-existing . Focusing exclusively on consoles, VGChartz estimates that is 2018's best selling new IP, but Quantic Dream's interactive movie fails to even make the top 15 highest grossing releases of the year. If the parameters were extended to the top 50 best sellers, only eight newcomers would manage to make the grade and one of those titles is Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. Taking into the higher cost of production and the absurd number of games released on a monthly basis, we can understand a publisher's yearning to push out yearly sequels to established franchises. Why go through the trouble of impressing a new audience when there are millions ready to buy the tenth iteration of a first-person shooter? Just to be crystal clear, franchises are perfectly fine when they show any desire to innovate, but too many titles are rushed out and feel like quick rehashes of an already tired formula. While Red Dead Redemption 2 and The Last of Us II could not arrive quick enough, here are 25 console games sequels coming soon that no one asked for! THEGAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY Rage 2
Via engadget.com Release Date: 2011's Rage came and went without much fanfare, so Bethesda's announcement of a sequel appeared out of nowhere and was greeted with a fair amount of head-scratching. As an FPS, id Software's original offered just enough mindless entertainment to be worth a playthrough, but Borderlands 2 overshadowed Rage in nearly every way. If the trailers are anything to go by, seems to have embraced its postapocalyptic insanity and gone for broke. Even though Rage was nothing special, Bethesda has done enough to justify giving this unsolicited sequel a gander. Team Sonic Racing
Via YouTube.com (Sonic the Hedgehog) Release Date: With the exception of Sonic Mania, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed remains the pinnacle of Sega's attempts to modernize the blue mascot. The fact that a racing spin-off serves as one of the franchise's only bright spots speaks volumes on Sonic's track record. Sega cannot resist the urge to mess around with a good thing, so Team Sonic Racing eliminates the transforming component from the previous games and prioritizes cooperative play. To be fair, the trailer looks pretty , but we have been stung too often by the hedgehog to approach any upcoming release without skepticism. Payday 3
Via gamersgreed.com Release Date: As reported by , Starbreeze's financial report implies that Payday 3 is expected to still be a handful of years away from publication. On a side note, should be out by 2020! A highly popular co-operative shooter that launched during the seventh generation, 's engaging gameplay gradually become overshadowed by a myriad of anti-consumer practices that left a substantial stain on the license. Besides demonstrating that it has more to offer than just a couple of new maps, Payday 3 needs to amend the relationship between the IP and its core fanbase. Tom Clancy s The Division 2
Via windowscentral.com Release Date: Please, do not be another Destiny 2. Similarly to Bungie's 2015 release, Tom Clancy's The Division got off to a lackluster start, but Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment withstood the initial storm and implement enough quality-of-life improvements to turn the third-person shooter into something worth playing. Considering Destiny 2 forgot nearly all of its lessons and Ubisoft opted to promote the upcoming sequel with another , it is hard to shake the feeling that Tom Clancy s The Division 2 will be another letdown. Ubisoft's shooter has the perfect opportunity to overtake Activision's alternative, but optimism is for the inexperienced. The Culling 2
Via polygon.com Release Date: Speaking of sequels that nobody asked for and should have never been released, was pulled from Steam within a couple of weeks. Desperately and pathetically grasping for a slice of that Fornite Battle Royale pie, Xaviant dropped any hints of creativity once possed by the IP and opted for a straight-up carbon copy of the genre's most popular iterations. Greeted with a widespread shrug by gamers and a wall of negative scores on Steam, Xaviant was left with little choice but to return to its roots. Jump Force
Via gamesradar.com Release Date: On paper, Jump Force sounds like a dream come through for anime devotees. Who does not want to witness a fight between Dragon Ball Z's Goku and One Piece's Luffy? J-Stars Victory VS promised to scratch the same itch, but the fighting game suffered from clunky gameplay and a terrible storyline that wasted its fantastic roster. Bandai Namco has yet to show anything that suggests Jump Force will be anything more than a limited fighter with a robust roster of beloved heroes and villains. The latter may be enough for some, but these characters deserve better. Fallout 76
Via windowscentral.com Release Date: Anything announced by Bethesda is bound to be greeted with a chorus of approval, especially when dealing with the company's flagship IPs. Expected to be the series' answer to The Elder Scrolls Online, Fallout 76 is a somewhat weird beast to discuss, as the spin-off may help reinvigorate the brand's momentum after Fallout 4's unevenness. Despite promising to include a sandbox that dwarfs its predecessor, 's detractors instantly hit the forums when Bethesda first announced the project. Has the series overstayed its welcome? Or, are certain fans just afraid of change? Crackdown 3
Via wccftech.com Release Date: Seriously, does anyone still care about Crackdown 3? Suffering multiple delays and subjected to mostly mediocre trailers, Microsft has managed to suck any hype that once surrounded Sumo Digital's sandbox action-adventure sequel. While Crackdown 2 had a couple of issues, the original title was a blast to play and stood out as a landmark release during the Xbox 360's initial days; nevertheless, the franchise was never really a system seller. Due to the Xbox One's poultry exclusive lineup, Crackdown 3 has been forced to shoulder way more responsibility than it is equipped to handle. Xbox's is truly a godsend. Ride 3
Via bigredbarrel.com Release Date: Racing is a niche genre, and that goes double for bike-centric titles. showed a vast improvement over its predecessor, but was still marred by technical difficulties and garnered nothing more than a decent critical reception. Following two mediocre games, Milestone has yet to prove that this is a franchise worth noticing. Fans of motorsports should probably give this a try, but Ride 3 must show that it has more to offer than just being with bikes. As games like DriveClub add motorcycles to their extensive collection, Ride 3's main selling point risks becoming redundant. EA Sports Cricket 2019
Via thetechinfohouse.blogspot.com Release Date: Admittedly, details remain somewhat sketchy when it comes to , but the sports series could be in line for a revival. With the last entry dating back to 2006, EA has been out of the game for quite a while, but the was largely well received at the time. The much-criticized publisher depends on their annual sports titles to facilitate a steady stream of profit, so EA may be considering stretching out its reach to reintegrate cricket alongside FIFA, NBA, Madden, and the NHL. At the end of the day, EA Sports Cricket grants another valid excuse to skip EA's E3 conference. Two Worlds 3
Via gamereactor.eu Release Date: Has nostalgia finally caught up with present time? hit the scene back in 2011, but there has been little talk about the possibilities of another sequel. Leaps and bounds better than its predecessor, Reality Pump's RPG struggled to compare favorably with the likes of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and felt instantly outdated. On the one hand, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice showed there is a market for ambitious mid-tier titles that make up for a smaller budget with a fiery passion, but Two Worlds is a name that fails to garner much enthusiasm. Call Of Duty Black Ops 4
Via trueachievements.com Release Date: There is no point in asking Santa for a new Call of Duty, as Activision refuses to allow the franchise to take a breather. If the publisher skipped a year, gamers may suddenly realize they are perfectly fine without the first-person shooter in their lives, so Black Ops 4 was promptly announced. Putting aside titles like Advanced Warfare, 2018's sequel is comfortably the least sought after release in the franchise's rich history. Lacking a and chasing after the Battle Royale craze, Black Ops 4 suggests that Call of Duty is truly out of ideas. NBA 2K19
Via nintendoenthusiast.com Release Date: When it comes to the visuals, 2K Sports' basketball series is second to none. As tends to be the case with these annual projects, the gameplay only shows marginal improvements with each new iteration, but NBA 2K19 has a solid foundation to build on. Even if the series has amassed a reputation for excellence, 's overreliance on microtransactions grew tiresome rather instantly. The single-player MyCareer mode appeared specifically designed to frustrate customers and force them to reach into their wallets. If NBA 2K19 continues down this trajectory, then 2K Sports can take their ball and go home. ELEX 2
Via gameplaying.info Release Date: Published towards the end of 2017, Piranha Bytes' ELEX is the living embodiment of a mixed bag. That is not to say the developer failed to do anything right, but the RPG gets off to a shockingly weak start and only transforms into something worth playing around the 15-hour mark. An action-heavy adventure with multiple combat styles, ELEX sits among the developer's most ambitious projects to date, but talk of a sequel commenced way too soon. Piranha Bytes' releases tend to suffer from bugs and janky gameplay, so they should really take their time before jumping into another story. Nickelodeon Kart Racers
Via polygon.com Release Date: Nickelodeon shows make for some pretty underwhelming games, although their kart racers tend to fare slightly better than the norm. Prior to Nickelodeon Kart Racers, the network's beloved characters have come together for three other copycats, although the upcoming title does seem to benefit from a bit more polish. We like Spongebob and Crash Team Racing as much as the next person, but that hardly means that the two should be combined! Even if this release just screams bargain basement, the kart racing genre could always use a couple of brand-new additions. Hopefully, this will fill the void for those who lack a Nintendo console. Battlefield V
Via worldabcnews.com Release Date: Battlefield 1 garnered a positive reception upon release, but EA's FPS lost a lot of steam surprisingly quickly. Even if the campaign contributed a fun, albeit short, experience, the multiplayer lacked the staying power of a Battlefield 4. Set in World War II, Battlefield V may be the series' first numbered entry that risks customer exhaustion. After more than a decade of Activision and EA oversaturating the market, we have finally reached a point where it is hard to build any excitement around a new Battlefield. At this point, what is there left to experience? Also, why is yet to be announced? God Eater 3
Via pushsquare.com Release Date: Serving as a high-octane alternative to Monster Hunter, God Eater began life as an action-RPG on the PlayStation Portable. Ports of both handheld games were published on the PlayStation 4, but there was no shaking the limitations imposed by the PSP's hardware. Expected to be available on the PS4 and PC, God Eater 3 marks the franchise's proper debut as a current-generation option and needs to improve over its predecessor in every single way. While the previous entry's gameplay and character models were fine, the environments were incredibly bland and repetitive. Monster Hunter: World set an incredibly high standard, one that God Eater 3 must try and match. MechWarrior 5 Mercenaries
Via imperium.news Release Date: Another inclusion that earned a mention due to being a rather unexpected sequel; however, MechWarrior 5 Mercenaries may be one of 2019's best releases. A first-person mecha simulator that places players in a suit's cockpit, MechWarrior 4: Vengeance was published in 2001, so the sequel has been a long time in the making. Considering the last two entries were not ported to consoles, the fact that Mercenaries should be heading to the PlayStation 4 is another welcome surprise. Initially slated for a 2018 release, Piranha Games opted to push the sequel back to the following year. The Walking Dead Final Season
Via polygon.com Release Date: For better or worse, Telltale Games found a formula that works and prefer to not stray too far off the beaten track. Among the first episodic games to show the genre's potential, The Walking Dead overstayed its welcome. With barely any improvements to the engine and the storyline lacking the emotional investment of the earlier seasons, A New Frontier showed that Telltale Games was starting to spread itself too thin. Predicted to conclude Clementine's storyline, The Walking Dead: The Final Season should put the IP out of its misery. Senran Kagura Reflexions
Via nintendowire.com Release Date: Besides remaking in the vein of the later titles, XSEED published a Nintendo Switch exclusive called Senran Kagura Reflexions. Available in Japan and set to be localized sometime this , Reflexions is a stark departure from the series' usual hack and slash combat. While the developer has never hesitated to market Senran Kagura's rather obvious assets, this spin-off drops any subtlety and centers the entire experience around fan-service. Asuka is the only shinobi to feature in the base game, and the goal is to get into a relationship with her. Expect a lot of massages and blushing cheeks.
