Harry Potter 20 Things Draco Malfoy Did After Deathly Hallows

Draco Malfoy was one of the biggest bullies in the Harry Potter series. But, what happened to him after Deathly Hallows? When we think of the typical school bully, but magical, we think of Draco Malfoy. Like many 90s kids, we grew up with this character. Now...bizarrely, we are all adults aren’t we? What is adult Draco up to? He came from an entire family line of Slytherins who were elitist. They clung to their belief that Pure-Blood wizards were the best, and were taught to be so from a young age. In that light, Draco of course turned out to be the brat we grew up with in the books. J.K. Rowling gives much to think about in terms of his character too. She writes a lot about him on Pottermore. She wrote that everyone has known someone like Draco in their lifetime. We know we have. We all have known bullies, at school, at work, or even at home. It’s someone who believes they are superior and will kick you down. But he does have another side to him: “I pity Draco, just as I feel sorry for Dudley,” “Being raised by either the Malfoys or the Dursleys would be a very damaging experience, and Draco undergoes dreadful trials as a direct result of his family’s misguided principles.” By the end of his education at Hogwarts, Malfoy did go through a lot of character development. As you’ll learn from this list, he isn’t utterly transformed but he does try to make some good out of himself. Here's 20 Things Draco Malfoy Did After Deathly Hallows . THEGAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY

Avoided Azkaban

via: aminoapps.com Draco managed to avoid time in Azkaban, despite his family’s involvement as Death Eaters serving Lord Voldemort. I guess avoided is a misguiding term. They were actually forgiven due to switching sides at the last minute. I’d say the moment they switched sides was when Draco’s mother, Narcissa, lied to Voldemort about whether Harry was gone or alive in the Forbidden Forest during the Battle of Hogwarts in the seventh book. It was sort of sweet, because she lied so she could save Draco and know he would be alright. With love being the strongest magic in the series, I suppose it is also sweet to say the Malfoy’s love of family is what saved them from Azkaban or worse. Narcissa didn’t only lie to Voldemort, but she made an Unbreakable Vow with Snape to ensure Draco’s safety (a powerful spell if which you perish if you don’t keep your promise). In fact, couldn’t we say a mother’s love saved Harry Potter a second time? Once with his own mother and then with Draco’s? Of course, Narcissa did not do this to avoid Azkaban (she probably didn’t even consider that far ahead). In fact, the family has had relatives in the wizard prison before. Draco’s dad, Lucius, was in Azkaban for a while with other Death Eaters until Voldemort helped them escape after a year.

Got Married

via: aminoapps.com Draco married a pure-blooded witch, Astoria Greengrass, and we see her briefly in the epilogue of the movies and books, though she wasn’t named till later. She actually attended Hogwarts two years after Draco, which explains a lot of why we knew little about her at first. Unfortunately Astoria passed away in 2019, but we will get more into that later. Like Draco, Astoria was raised to believe in pure-blood elitism. However, also like him, she grew up to strive to be a little more open-minded as an adult. Astoria is the sister of Daphne Greengrass. Some avid Potter fans may remember Daphne as a part of a gang of Slytherin girls from the books and subtly in the movies who was attending the same year as the main characters. It’s actually unknown as to which Hogwarts house Astoria was in, though I’ll assume it was Slytherin. I mean, her name is Greengrass! That’s like the color of Slytherin and snakes hide in the grass, don’t they? Many fans expected Draco to end up with another Slytherin bully, Pansy Parkinson, but in an interview it was revealed that Rowling actually disliked Pansy. , “I don't love Draco but I really dislike her. She's every girl who ever teased me at school. She's the Anti-Hermione. I loathe her.”

Had a Son

via: denofgeek.com Draco and Astoria had a single son, Scorpius. This brought on many health complications for Astoria and created some foul rumors that made the son’s life a certain degree of miserable. However, Draco and Astoria had a very strong and loving relationship with him (as we learned in the seventh book, family is very important to the Malfoys). Scorpius, like Draco, also got into Slytherin when he attended Hogwarts. He is far more likable than Draco, as he is actually accepting of others and becomes best friends with Harry’s son, Albus. Not only is he best friends with Harry’s son, but he has a huge crush of Hermione and Ron’s daughter, Rose. The whole thing appears one-sided though, as Rose has rejected his advances far more than just once. We do get to see Scorpius a little in the books and movie’s epilogue. Ron does make a funny comment, telling Rose that she needs to be sure to get better grades than him (showing he’s still bitter about Draco’s elitism). Scorpius became friends with Albus the same way Harry did with Ron and Hermione. They sat together on the train to Hogwarts and ate candy. I guess Rowling finds train rides and candy ideal friendship-making material.

No Job

via: telegraph.co.uk Draco is from a rich family! He never needs to work a day in his life! That’s not a joke, he actually doesn’t work. , “Independently wealthy, without any need to work, Draco inhabits Malfoy Manor with his wife and son.” He lives off of inheritance money!, so the lucky man can dedicate his life to hobbies without the stress of making money. As we will see later, he does have some hobbies. How are the Malfoy’s so rich anyway? We learned in the Chamber of Secrets movie that Lucius has a job at the Ministry, although that was not mentioned in the books. I think their wealth fits into the term “old money.” Straight from Pottermore, , “With no need to work for a living, they have generally preferred the role of power behind the throne, happy for others to do the donkey work and to take the responsibility for failure.” She also wrote in Pottermore that the Malfoy family may have “dabbled” in Muggle currency and assets. That over hundreds of years, they’ve been adding to their lands by annexing Muggles. Wow, what jerks. With that whole history, it’s no wonder Draco decided he was better than anyone else. He was a spoiled brat from a rich family that taught him to see people for their class as well as blood.

Lives in Malfoy Manor

via: harrypotter.wikia.com We have also learned from The Cursed Child, as well as Pottermore, that adult Draco and his family live in Malfoy Manor. What is there to say about Malfoy Manor? It is in Wiltshire, England and we’ve managed to see a decent amount of the manor since it was a major base of operations for Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters. In the movies and books, we can see that the Malfoys were rather uncomfortable with that turn of events. Not really a place with warm memories is it? Voldemort’s most loyal girl, Bellatrix (Lucius’s sister-in-law), thought it was an honor though. There’s nothing worse than an intimidating house guest, is there? According to Pottermore, the cellar is escape-proof, so it can be used to hold prisoners. Such prisoners included Mr. Ollivander, Luna Lovegood, Griphook, and Dean Thomas. Besides prisoners, the people who have lived in its halls include a long line of Malfoys and I suppose Dobby as well for a time. How the family got the manor goes far back to Armand Malfoy. He was lucky enough to arrive in Britain with William the Conqueror. Due to his subtle and magical services to the king, he got the land in Wiltshire and thus Malfoy Manor was born.

Collects Dark Artifacts

via: geekynews.com The Malfoy family seems to have passed this hobby down through the generations. According to Pottermore, Draco keeps up this family tradition and with the manor, he has probably inherited most of the collection already. So what even is a dark artifact? Well, this is going to sound bad, but Lord Voldemort’s Horcruxes are an example (the journal, snake, and locket). There are other examples though, like Umbridge’s black quill (the black quill that she used to punish Harry by writing with the ink being his own blood). Other examples include the Hand of Glory, a shriveled hand that gifts light to its holder (and we know Draco actually owns this piece after he purchased it from Borgin and Burkes!). Snape has had ownership of another dark artifact known as a Dark Curio, which is an object that evokes curiosity (oh no, the horror?). There is also the Crushing Cabinet from Borgin and Burkes. As the name suggests, it is a torture device that crushes those who enter the cabinet. There are artifacts that have only appeared in the books like the Spider Tweezers owned by the Black family in The Order of the Phoenix. It was a pair of tweezers that had eight legs and acted like a spider, because of course we’d want something like that to exist!

Studies Alchemical Manuscripts

via: wattpad.com Luckily, Draco has a hobby besides collecting creepy dark artifacts, studying alchemical manuscripts! It is rare for studying to be a hobby isn’t it? However we have to remember that Draco has no work to do, as he’s wealthy and bored. With that in mind, this hobby makes a lot of sense to keep his mind active. Basically, this means Draco has interest in potion making, transformation, and chemistry. He takes a little after Snape in this way? God, we would suck at those classes. Do you ever just think about what classes you would excel in and what classes you would fail in at Hogwarts? Draco not working actually seems like a waste of Hogwarts-raised intellect. At that rate, why wasn’t he home-schooled? If you read up on class subjects in Pottermore, you’ll learn that alchemy is an elective class at Hogwarts, thus it isn’t required for graduation. We suppose the staff also see it as higher level learning, as it’s only taught to sixth and seventh year students. We do not get details as to what Draco does with his study of alchemical manuscripts, but Rowling does hint that it could be because he wants to be a better man and desires something more than just wealth.

Never Friends with Harry Potter

voa popsugar.co.uk According to Rowling, Draco was never destined to be friends with Harry. On Pottermore, : “Draco has all the dark glamour of the anti-hero; girls are very apt to romanticize such people. All of this left me in the unenviable position of pouring cold common sense on ardent readers’ daydreams as I told them, rather severely, that Draco was not concealing a heart of gold under all that sneering and prejudice and that no, he and Harry were not destined to end up best friends.” Too much has happened in the books to be healed so easily. In the epilogue, we do get a nod from Draco to Harry to show that he recognizes him, but that’s the most we’re going to get. And who can blame them? If we were Harry, we wouldn’t ever want to be friends with Draco. On Draco’s terms, the whole thing is embarrassing. He was cruel to Harry and then Harry saved his life. That’s probably wounded his pride and is something he’d like to forget.

Tense Family Gatherings

via: cinemablend.com Due to Draco undergoing some extreme changes because of the extreme situations that happened in the books, Rowling mentioned on Pottermore that family reunions are very tense times. We suppose his parents did not learn, as much as he did, that their values are outdated and well...wrong. For Scorpius, it’s like inviting your racist grandma over for Christmas dinner. We think a ton of people know what it feels like when the family is politically and/or religiously split and you have to deal with gatherings like you’re stepping across a lake of ice. Draco did not meet all of this family’s expectations from his choice of wife and the way he raises Scorpius (which we will go into more later). This may be part of what Rowling meant by kids like Draco and Dudley being pitiable. Though we do know far less about how adult Dudley is doing. This hasn’t been mentioned, but we wonder if Draco’s parents feel any guilt about what they put him through, but refuse to dwell on it with him? Their choice to be Death Eaters kind of ruined his life. What’s really sad is they all are now kind of outcasts and yet they can’t find that much comfort in each other anymore. We see that Harry didn’t want Albus to be friends with Draco’s son in The Cursed Child, so that may also say something about how they feel about each other as adults.

Raises his Son Different

via: harrypotter.wikia.com Draco and his wife both decided to raise Scorpius differently than how they were raised. So no more telling children, “pure-bloods are number one” and “muggles are rat-people.” That’s a good start to parenting. We have to give Draco points for this. While he hasn’t exactly revolutionized himself, he does change the family line’s karma with Scorpius, who is accepting of others and isn’t an elitist bully. However, the parents did shelter him a crazy amount, as he never really hung out with kids his age until going to Hogwarts. Having no friends before then, he read many books. This makes him more of an outcast than he already was due to the nasty rumors about his family. This is partly why the family gatherings are tense as well, as Scorpius’s grandparents are still stuck in their traditional pure-blood ways despite everything that happened in the seventh book. I’m sure they still love him in their own way though. It’s mentioned that Draco and Astoria raised Scorpius with love and affection that they never received when they were growing up. I think even a lot of fans could argue that Draco was a better father to Scorpius than Harry was to Albus.

Astoria had a Complicated Pregnancy

via: pinterest Draco’s wife had a cursed bloodline and the curse was gained by an ancestor. Very little is known about the curse, like who gave it, why, and whether it was deserved. What we do know is that is caused Astoria to be very frail and it’s called “blood malediction.” The Harry Potter wikia has theorized the curse may be like a magical form of leukaemia. Astoria partly wanted a child because she knew she would not make it to old age and didn’t want Draco to be left all alone. Draco told her he was fine with the family line ending with him, as he was concerned that her pregnancy would just worsen her health. However, they managed to have Scorpius. As Draco predicted, her health worsened and that made them more secluded. This produced a lot of awful rumors about their son. The rumors were that Draco and Astoria used a time-turner to impregnate Astoria with Voldemort’s son. This is a major factor as to why Scorpius never met other kids until Hogwarts and why he is a loner. The rumors probably are part of why the family secluded themselves. The curse is what ended Astoria’s life during Scorpius’s third year at Hogwarts. Art was made by .

Draco s parents disapproved of his wife

via: wizardsandwhatnot.com In The Cursed Child, we learn from Scorpius that his grandparents did not approve of Draco and Astoria’s marriage. Astoria told Scorpius about the whole thing. She said that Draco rebelled against his parents and chose to marry her despite their complaints. She told Scorpius it "was one of the most courageous things she’d ever seen." Draco must have really loved her. We’d love to know more about what he loved about her and how they met since they attended Hogwarts two years apart. Lucius and Narcissa wanted a wife for Draco that would be a good influence and keep the family in the Sacred Twenty-Eight, which is a publication about how being pure-blood makes you the best. Voldemort loved the book’s philosophy. The book listed the pure-blood families that the unknown author deemed “sacred” due to their pure-bloodedness. While Astoria’s family (the Greengrasses) were listed, I think Lucius and Narcissa had an issue with her beliefs on raising Scorpius differently (so he’ll likely marry into a family who may not be pure-blooded). A list of the other Sacred Twenty-Eight can be viewed on Pottermore. Families in it include the Abbots, Lestranges, Longbottoms, Ollivanders, Parkinsons, Burkes, Weasleys, Crouches, and Blacks.

Son looks just like him

via: redbubble.com The Malfoys must have strong genes, since Scorpius looks identical to Draco. The Malfoy’s sort of work like the Weasley’s I guess? The Malfoys all have to have blonde hair, get in Slytherin and are rich, while the Weasleys have to all have red hair, get in Griffindor and are poor. Blood sort of carries a destiny when it comes to hair and Hogwarts houses doesn’t it? I know Albus gets into Slytherin, BUT Harry would have gotten there anyway if he didn’t beg the hat for another option (and let’s admit that was because of Draco bullying him and getting into Slytherin). Albus is also noted to look like his father, Harry Potter. Wizard blood has some strong genes! The name Scorpius is also a resemblance to his father. The Malfoys at a certain point began to name their children based on constellations. We heard a lot of fans were not happy with Scorpius’ name. We’ll admit, it probably could have been better. I’m sure Rowling could’ve used Scorpion in another language or butchered it to be less like the constellation. Art by .

Has a Dual Nature

via: bustle.com Rowling mentioned Malfoy having a dual nature in Pottermore , “I see in his hobbies further confirmation of his dual nature.” Firstly, what does Rowling mean to have a dual nature? Having two characters in one or having dual purposes? She also said “further confirmation,” so what else confirms that Draco is dual natured? We suppose as an adult he only half changed. There is still that little spoiled brat, while there is also an adult in him that has learned some from his behavior at Hogwarts. We see this in how he marries a pure-blood and stays in the manor (like we’d expect from kid Malfoy), but he also teaches his son to be better and disobeys his parents. A dual nature is what Rowling gave us rather than a completely transformed character, which is more realistic. I think Draco’s wand may also tie into this dual nature that Rowling mentions. His wand is made of unicorn hair and hawthorn. If you are a wand-nerd, then you probably already know that unicorn hair is more geared toward kindly and good wizards and is the most difficult wand for performing dark arts. On the other end, hawthorn is a kind of wand that Ollivander has found to often choose wizards who are going through an inner struggle.

Is a modified version of his father

via: lorandesore.deviantart.com This was another statement made by Rowling on Pottermore. To know what she truly means though, we need to know more about Draco’s father, Lucius. Like adult Draco, his father had no need to work due to independent family wealth. As we already know, Lucius became one of Voldemort’s Death Eaters and helped the Dark Lord with the war. He committed a lot of evil acts, such as torturing muggles. He was even caught, but avoided imprisonment, for a while, because he lied about his innocence. In the time between wizard wars, Lucius collected dark artifacts and worked to keep up his powerful influence in the wizarding world. He wanted Draco to go to a more private wizarding school where only pure-bloods were allowed called the Durmstrang Institute. He probably preferred Durmstrang because Dumbledore wasn’t the headmaster there. We know Dumbledore had opposing views with the Malfoys when it came to pure-bloods and muggles. However, Draco went to Hogwarts anyway since his doting mother didn’t want him so far away. We also learn in The Tales of Beedle and Bard, that Lucius was one of those annoying overbearing parents that constantly tried to control the school’s curriculum. For example, he tried to get one of the books, The Fountain of Fair Fortune, banned because it depicted love between a witch and muggle. Art by .

Desires something more than wealth

via: pinterest Draco’s adult hobbies hint that he desires for something other than wealth. I mean, aren’t Slytherin’s known for their ambition? It must be torture for someone with ambition to already have wealth and have nothing to do. However, Rowling hasn’t yet released any information as to if Draco has accomplished anything other than wealth. He collects dark artifacts and studies alchemical manuscripts, what can you do with that? With knowledge of potions, you could really make claim to fame with a possible cure to magical threats such as curses. In fact, that would be perfect since Astoria perished from a curse! We think doing something good with a dark artifact would make it not a dark artifact anymore. From my earlier summary of the dark artifacts we’ve seen, they are not really friendly devices. However, Draco could possibly use the collection to test alchemical formulas! I don’t know how but I’m sure it could be done. We should also think about what Draco doesn’t have. His family has probably nearly lost all influence after the conclusion of the war, so he could strive for that. There is honor and fame, which is something most ambitious people strive for other than money. Art by .

Embarrassed that Harry saved him

via: tricialevenseller.com Rowling was asked if Draco owes Harry a debt for saving his life. She said, “I think the very worst burden Harry could have put Malfoy under was this one, that Malfoy has to feel any kind of gratitude. So I tried to show that slightly in the epilogue when they look slightly at each other and there's a, 'Hi. It's so embarrassing, you saved my life. No one will ever let me forget it.' I think, does he owe him a debt, probably not. I think Malfoy would go back to being an improved version of what he was but we shouldn't expect him to be a really great guy any time soon.” I think this examination of Draco’s nature feels realistic to what anyone else would feel. Think of the person you despise and then imagine them saving your life. It is embarrassing! It would be an awful feeling because now you owe them. Imagining that now, seeing each other when they dropped their children off for Hogwarts was probably very awkward. Draco was probably screaming on the inside. This was probably one of the larger reasons on the long list as to why they never become friends.

Rumors about his son

via: zimbio.com Let’s get more into the rumor that Draco’s son, Scorpius, is Voldemort’s son. Time-turners play a huge role in The Cursed Child. The story is a big time-travel adventure. The existence of the time traveling magic is what makes the rumor get rooted among Hogwarts students. Scorpius himself says, “The rumor is that my parents couldn't have children. That my father and my grandfather were so desperate for a powerful heir, to prevent the end of the Malfoy line, that they... that they used a Time-Turner to send my mother back [so that Voldemort could impregnate her].” What’s really sad is that it turned out Draco did not care about the family line when it compromised Astoria’s health. Hardcore fans would, also, wonder if even the more traditional Malfoys would even consider that plan as a good one since Voldemort wasn’t pure-blooded. We think there is enough evidence to show that the Malfoys were more into the philosophy of Voldemort, rather than the man himself. Draco does attempt to end these rumors too. He begs others to deny there is truth to them and even asks Harry to help. He tries to get the Ministry of Magic to make a statement that all time-turners were destroyed at the Department of Mysteries so that it wouldn’t even be possible to use one.

Very close to his son

via: pinterest We see in The Cursed Child that Draco and Astoria are very good parents to Scorpius. How Scorpius made friends with Albus on the train to Hogwarts was through candy. It was Astoria who gave Scorpius the candy and told him that candy was a great way to make friends. Unlike Harry, Draco approved of Scorpius’s and Albus’s friendship. For once, I think the audience agreed with Draco when he told Harry, “My son is in tears and I am his father and so I am here to ask why you would keep apart two good friends.” He even says sweet affectionate things to his son like, “We can hug too if you like.” This is definitely out of Draco’s normal comfort zone, which makes it all the more meaningful. Draco makes sure that he and Scorpius never have a relationship like he had with his father, Lucius. We saw this when he said something pretty profound, “I think you have to make a choice — at a certain point — of the man you want to be. And I tell you that at that time you need a parent or a friend. And if you’ve learned to hate your parent by then and you have no friends … then you’re all alone. And being alone — that’s so hard. I was alone. And it sent me to a truly dark place. For a long time." Art was made by .

Doesn t use Dark Artifacts

via: geekynews.com Draco collects dark artifacts like his family has for generations, but doesn’t actually use any of them. He just keeps the items in glass cases, like a dark artifact museum. We’d pay good money to visit a dark artifact museum. Each artifact probably has a wild story involved that would make the place great for tours. His dark artifacts collection has wound up like our Pokémon cards and Beanie-Babies, we just keep them around for viewing and nothing else. The dark artifacts could work as extra security if the family ever runs low on money. I imagine the artifacts are very pricey. Poor Scorpius though, imagine having a two-year-old running around with all these dark artifacts around the house. We bet he gave Draco and Astoria some heart attacks. Actually, one way to think about this collection is that it’s a good deed. Draco collects them and does nothing with them so no one else can have them. No psychopaths can get their hands on some kind of shoes that make people dance until they die or a soul-sucking doll. Draco probably doesn’t have that in mind, but does make me realize this collection is for the best of everyone.
