Marvel Movies 20 Storylines That Were Completely Abandoned
Marvel seems to have a hard time keeping all their storylines straight. These ones were completely abandoned by the movies. There have been dozens and dozens of movies based on Marvel Comics at this point. Across the numerous rights holders and film franchises, many characters and concepts have come and gone. No matter if a movie is good or bad though, there will always be plot points that are brought up and are never resolved. The chief among these would have to be of course the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With the universe coming on their tenth birthday soon enough, there has been a lot of ground covered. It has also grown larger than anybody could have imagined and because of that, many storylines and characters from the original "Phase 1" movies have been forgotten by Marvel. The controversial Iron Man 3 also has a quite a few threads hanging that I'll get into later. Next up is the X-Men movies and wow, if people think the MCU is complicated then they obviously never delved into the minutia of FOX's mutants. With multiple timelines and over 15 years of films, this tornado of a franchise has been through the ringer and left numerous storylines in its wake. I don't even think I got them all to be honest. And then there are the Spider-Man movies. With Spidey finally somewhat free from the clutches of Sony, we don't have to worry about Spidey storylines getting cut short once again. Having said that, there are quite a bit of plot threads that were left hanging on a web line from both the Sam Raimi and Marc Webb series. Now let's get into all of them. Here are 20 Marvel Movie storylines that were completely abandoned. THEGAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY Iron Man A-Ok
via polygon.com Iron Man 3 is a film with so much potential, yet so little to show for it. Every time the film looks like it has a good idea, it bungles it up and that combined with the numerous plot holes is why Iron Man 3 gets so much hate from fans. But perhaps its biggest reason is that so much of the film is ignored by the rest of the MCU. I can forgive the fact that Tony Stark lied about giving up the role of Iron Man. It's in character for him to make that "promise" only to break it. However, the film goes to great lengths to explore how Stark is dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder. However by the time that Avengers: Age of Ultron starts up, it's completely ignored, and to this date hasn't been brought up again. Hulk Forget About Betty
via marvelcinematicuniverse.wikia.com Fans were utterly blindsided by the revelation in Avengers: Age of Ultron that Black Widow and Bruce Banner were for some inexplicable reason written into a romantic storyline together. Not only was it hated because it was badly written and out of nowhere, but also because it completely ignored Banner's true love. Betty Ross. Hulk sorry Betty. Hulk had to deal with poorly handled subplot. The last time we see the two together is once Hulk defeats The Abomination in The Incredible Hulk and he says her name in Hulk form. After that Banner fled the military and we never hear or see Betty again. Pretty ridiculous, considering it's the Hulk's main love interest in the comics. But like many things in that movie, we're probably not getting any answers. Follow The Leader To Nowhere
via: complex.com, marvel.com Both solo Hulk films and Thor: Ragnarok have given Hulk other giant monsters to brawl with as his main adversaries. In reality, while this makes for great fights, it kind of keeps the Hulk locked in as a two-dimensional character. What he really needs to be put against is somebody who can match Banner's intellect and also give the Hulk a good fight. Enter Samuel Sterns, a.k.a The Leader. Clearly, this supervillain wasn't wasting brain power on his name. This villain actually exists in the MCU already. In The Incredible Hulk, the partner who helps Hulk but ultimately betrays him actually shows signs of transforming into this brainiac due to gamma poisoning. However, he hasn't been seen since, and with a solo Hulk movie likely to never happen again, The Leader will lead nothing. Red Skull s Wacky Space Adventure
via: reddit.com Captain America: The First Avenger may not have had the initial wow factor that the first Iron Man movie, it was still a contender for best Phase 1 MCU movie and a big part of that was Hugo Weaving's turn as the Red Skull. Subtlety is not his strength and that's fine because he's a man with a red face who tries to conquer the world. Hugo Weaving showed some interest in reprising the role in 2016... The ending of his movie is where the first Cap movie loses some points for me. After an underwhelming final battle, the villain is sent through space courtesy of the Tesseract. So really he didn't perish, he just teleported away. But we still haven't seen him since the 2011 film and you know the comic book rule; if we don't see a body, he's still alive. But as of now, he is still lost in space. The Bifrost Repair Service
via pinterest.com "Does your world feel isolated? Do brotherly quarrels end up with a rainbow bridge of yours shattered because of a magical hammer? Well then don't hesitate to call Plot Convenience Repair Systems. We can rebuild your Bifrost Bridge for you as long as you never mention it to anyone again. Yes, we are bad at advertising." Okay, that was ridiculous, but at least I offered an explanation as to how the Bifrost Bridge got repaired. At the end of the original Thor, we see the Bifrost Bridge being destroyed by the God of Thunder in what is clearly meant to be a big deal. However, in Thor: The Dark World we see the Bifrost good as new. If it was so easy to do, why was it such a big deal in the first place? Rings of lazy storytelling to me. Did He Fix That Door
via youtube.com (Clark Kent) Dear reader, may I ask that you indulge a Spider-Man fanatic in a little bit of light-hearted fun? What, you won't? Well, it's my list and I'm going to do it anyway. There is a reason why this scene has been memed. WE NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO THE DOOR! In Sam Raimi's trilogy, Peter Parker moves out of Aunt May's house and into an apartment whose landlord is Mr. Ditkovich. Now, while Mr. Ditkovich is entertaining, he is a cranky man who constantly hounds Peter for rent. He pushes Peter (under influence of the symbiote) too far one day and Peter tells him "you'll get your rent when you fix this DARN DOOR!" Mr. Ditkovich backs off, but by the end of the movie, we still never know if the door is fixed. Brb, going to go hound Sam Raimi on Twitter for answers. Why So Mysterious
via youtube.com (PANSINO SMOSH) I, like many other people who have seen the movie, have blocked out the Amazing Spider-Man 2. Not only is that most misleading moniker for a film ever, but since it leaves behind so many plots that will never be resolved it ends up being one of the most unsatisfying movies ever. No plot thread is left dangling more though than the identity of "The Gentleman." Knowing this franchise, this identity reveal would probably be a tremendous letdown. At the end of both the Amazing Spider-Man and Amazing Spider-Man 2, we see a mystery man cloaked in shadows who talks to both Harry Osborn and Dr. Curt Connors. Now, technically, we found out his identity in the credits as Gustav Fiers. But that name means nothing to anyone. Where Is Uncle Ben s Reaper
via youtube.com BALLINGER Marvel) The original Spider-Man movie from Sam Raimi in 2002 had a random dude be the man who slew Uncle Ben. Then we found it was Sandman. That was dumb. The Amazing Spider-Man series has Peter Parker never managing to track him down. The film ends with him still at large, and Amazing Spider-Man 2 forgets about him. With the franchise ended for good, Peter will never get revenge on the burglar in this universe. Maybe the series would have gone with the comic books for answers. You see in Amazing Spider-Man #200 that Spider-Man confronts the burglar once again years after the initial incident and ends with the Burglar perishing from a heart attack after he thought Peter was going to end him for what he did to his uncle. Nope, knowing this series, Peter would fight him in an underground subway station or something stupid like that. Explosions Mean Nothing In X-Men 3
via gizmodo.com.au Most people like to block out what happened in X-Men: The Last Stand as the film severely botches many characters' personalities and is generally considered the weakest of the original X-Men trilogy. Everybody remembers that Xavier is blown up in that movie as a result of Jean Grey's Phoenix powers. What some people forget, however, is that he returns at the end of the movie in the body of another person. But how!? There actually is a throwaway line in the movie where Xavier discusses the ethics of a psychic transferring his mind into a brain-dead person's body. Alternatively, it's said in the DVD commentary that the person at the end of the movie that Xavier transfers his mind into is his twin brother. Not only does that make no bit of sense, but it isn't said in the movie itself. Basically, they couldn't say no to more Patrick Stewart. Understandable. Why Did Mystique Save Logan
via cbr.com X-Men: Days of Future Past deals with time travel so you're going to get a ton of questions and potential headaches. Surprisingly, however, this problem doesn't have much to do time travel shenanigans. Kitty Pryde's time powers or not, this plot point goes nowhere. Disney's purchase of the X-Men characters ensures that this question will never be answered. At the end of the movie, Wolverine is about to perish in the waters of New York but Mystique (impersonating herself as William Stryker) rescues Wolverine. Seeing as how Mystique is a hero to all mutants in this timeline, it doesn't make a lick of sense as to why Wolverine undergoes his experiments at Weapon X in X-Men: Apocalypse. How did Wolverine manage to get experimented on? Beats me, and FOX studios apparently. Where Did You Get Those Wolverine
via: youtube.com X-Men: Days of Future Past is a mixed bag of a movie, but one of its strengths is showing just how bleak their future is and how unstoppable the Sentinels are. It is in that future, however, that we see a massive continuity glitch/plot point that is never discussed. Wolverine's adamantium. The easy answer to this? Those metal claws look too good in marketing pictures. The second Wolverine solo film, The Wolverine, ends with Logan getting the adamantium claws cut from his body by the Silver Samurai. However, in the very next movie, Wolverine is seen sporting his signature metal claws once again. This may be lost on people because he spends most of the movie in the past with his bone claws, but I didn't forget. Did Spider-Man Beat Rhino
via youtube.com Filmic Box) The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the worst Spider-Man film in existence (yes, worse than 3) but it could have at least had an emotionally impactful ending if they decided to end it with the loss of Gwen Stacy. But they didn't as for some inexplicable reason the movie drags on for another 5-10 minutes and it ends with Peter shrugging off the loss of his girlfriend by fighting the Rhino. The best opening for the third movie would have been for Rhino to put Spidey on his horn. However, this ending just raises the question. Did Spider-Man win his fight against the Rhino or not? Obviously, we can say of course he does, because he's Spider-Man, but we do know at this point he'd been out of action for five months. What if he was rusty and Rhino got the better of him? We'll never know. Nick Fury s
via: slashfilm.com Don't give me that smug smile, Samuel L. Jackson. I just have one question to ask you. Where in the heck are you in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? In the early days of the MCU, Nick Fury was one of the most pivotal players in the entire franchise. He was responsible for assembling the Avengers in the first place and he made appearances in multiple solo outings for other heroes. But after Fury left S.H.I.E.L.D. in the second Cap film, he made a brief appearance in Age of Ultron and has yet to be seen from there. While he will make an appearance in Captain Marvel, that takes place in the 1990s. That gives us no answers to the question of where Fury is in the modern day. Paging Lady Sif
via digitalspy.com With Thor: Ragnarok revitalizing the Thor franchise, most people aren't going to shed a tear if many of the things from the previous two films are forgotten about. That might explain people were falling over themselves for the inclusion of an awesome warrior lady called Valkyrie when there was already one in the series; Lady Sif. We shouldn't have to scour down interviews with Kevin Feige for answers on where a character is. While Sif was a significant part of the first Thor film, her role was downplayed in the second and then she was shipped to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for their second season. Since that show doesn't really tie into the movies, Kevin Feige explained that Loki banished Sif when he was impersonating Odin. Where she went, however, is likely never to be answered. Although if Thor perishes in Infinity War... Asgard would need a new hero... The Mandarin Where Art Thou
via imgur.com Easily the most hair-pulling part of Iron Man 3 for fans was the fake out of The Mandarin. Despite being presented as a legitimate terrorist threat and one of the scariest villains in the MCU, it turns out that the Mandarin that we were seeing throughout the whole movie was nothing more than an actor. However, it was then revealed that there REALLY WAS a terrorist group headed by the Mandarin out there in the Thor: The Dark World Blu Ray extra All Hail The King. If Tony Stark perishes in the fight versus Thanos, we can definitely kiss The Mandarin goodbye. The problem is that Marvel never really did anything with him after this. The one shot smacks of Marvel rectifying fan outrage but then not following up on the potential dramatic goodness. The Mandarin will likely have to terrorize from the shadows here on out. Break Out Already Abomination
via screenrant.com While he wasn't the best villain in the MCU by a long shot, Emil Blonsky deserves more respect than he gets from fans. This ex U.K. army soldier was so bloodthirsty and eager for combat that he tried to take on the Hulk with nothing more than a knockoff super soldier serum and military weapons. Then when became the Abomination he almost defeated the Jade Giant. Since then? He's been locked away. Who doesn't want to see Abomination vs Hulk II? No explanation, just do it. Most MCU villains meet their end in the movies but Abomination survived is just sitting locked away in a S.H.I.E.L.D. prison. While there have been supplementary books that tease his return, nothing has come of it. If the living MCU villains ever team up, Abomination could be the muscle of the group... Is Ultron REALLY Destroyed
via youtube.com Yorkan) In the comics, Ultron is one of the Marvel Universe's biggest threats. Not because he is immensely powerful (which he is) but because he constantly survives what should be his final stands. This is because he manages to transfer his consciousness from one body to another like in Avengers: Age of Ultron. But all of his bodies were destroyed in that movie, right? Right? Well yes... but not really. Let me explain. In that movie, we know that Vision is able to lock out Ultron from the internet so he can't transfer his memory anymore. But come on this is Ultron, there has got to be a way where he can survive or maybe that actually wasn't the last drone that Vision wiped out. Hopefully, if Vision bites the dust (which I kind of hope not because I love him), that sets a return in motion for Ultron. Stan Lee Smash
via slashfilm.com Most of Stan Lee's cameos in the Marvel movies have him in roles which have absolutely no bearing on the plot. The lone exception to this rule was in 2008's The Incredible Hulk where he plays a man who ingested a soft drink containing a sample of Bruce Banner's blood. This allows General Ross to find Bruce Banner but it is left ambiguous as to what happened to Stan himself. The fans demand Stan "The Incredible Hulk" Lee. The only line that we get is a woman who tells Ross that an old man drank the liquid and it "had a little more kick than he expected." This is a comic book movie though, you can't be that vague and not expect us to speculate. What if that drink managed to create an elder Stan Lee with super strength? We will never know. Mary Jane Peter Parker Happily Ever After
via youtube.com Bob The Human Being) While the writing between the two in Spider-Man 3 was hair-pulling, the coupling of Mary Jane and Peter Parker was still nice to see for many a young and old Spidey fan. This is one of the greatest couples in comic book history, but their final fate is something that will never be shown. If you forgot about Spider-Man 3, allow me to remind you that Peter proposes to Mary Jane in this movie only to have Mary Jane reject his proposal because Peter is kind of a moron in this movie. By the end of the movie, it appears though that MJ and Peter have made up after all the turmoil the movie puts them through... but we don't know. The film fades to black after the two start somberly dancing, and we're left to wonder if they ever married because of Spider-Man 4's cancellation. Gotta Collect Em All
via: dailyexpress.com Remember The Collector? He was in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie in a memorable scene. Just based on his name, you can probably figure out what his thing is; collecting things. One of the things that he seems to have been interested in collecting were the Infinity Stones. This was shown in a post-credit scene for Thor: The Dark World. However, like a lot of things, it's something that seems to have been all but forgotten by the MCU. Why hasn't he tried harder to get the stones? Supposedly he was willing to do anything to get them, but he hasn't actually tried to get them that we know of. We'll see him in Infinity War, but probably just so they can take the Infinity Stone he already has. What's he been doing this whole time? Why hasn't he been seen again?
