Under The Sea 20 Cartoon Characters Reimagined As Mermaids

Mermaids have always held much fascination, so why not take a look at some of our favorite characters with fins... Mermaids have always been a fascination of mine and I know I’m not alone. How can I be alone when we are in an age when we just replace the lesser half of anything with a fish tail and call it a mermaid? There’s nothing wrong with that. I have a pug mermaid pin on my bag, and I love it and everyone I show it to starts crying with envy. I also have a clan of Mermacorns on my desk, beautiful Mermacorns. Maybe we love mermaids so much because we grew up with Disney’s hit movie, The Little Mermaid. Then we grew up and looked up the original fairytale and found out the original story was very dark and that connected to our edgy teenage/young adult selves as well. Despite various incarnations of mermaids showing up in hit series like Pirates of the Caribbean and Harry Potter, I have yet to see a mermaid series I’m satisfied with. Either we got pretty princess mermaids who want to fall in love or mermaids that eat flesh. I just want something in the middle with tons of mermaid world building and complex characters and stunning character designs. Like why do all mermaids have to be just half fish? Why not half seal, shark, or jellyfish? So to get close to what I want, I have to look up alternate universes. Mermaids are nostalgic because of The Little Mermaid. So why not cartoon alternate universes where these characters are mermaids? THEGAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY

Merida Under The Sea

via: deviantart.com (FERNL) I love how the glowing will o’ the wisps are now glowing jellyfish! Merida’s hair would be even more of a mess under the sea wouldn’t it? I bet little shrimp and fish creatures would live in it like a nest, like those fish that attach themselves to shark fins for safety, nutrients, and a free ride. In this alternate universe, would everything bear-related be replaced with a great white shark? She turns her mermaid mom into a great white shark. That’s scarier than a bear honestly. I’d be terrified of my mom-shark. She and Ariel have stubbornness in common. Also don't Ariel’s actions get her father turned into an eel for a little bit? That’s just like what Merida did, except that’s the plot in Merida’s movie. This art piece was made by .

Watery Fionna And Cake

Via: deviantart.com (JuliaLucky) With Fionna and Cake literally being fanfiction written by the Ice King in Adventure Time, them as mermaids in one of his drafts is definitely possible. The Fionna and Cake episodes are some of the most popular in the Adventure Time series too. This is because they explore an alternate universe where all genders are switched. It was a creative way to leak in alternate ideas while still sticking to the canon characters and plot. It’s not just opposite gender, but alternate ideas like Cake is a cat instead of Jake the dog and Fionna’s hat resembles a rabbit rather than a bear. In a world of giants, shapeshifters, and elementals...mermaids are definitely a real thing in Adventure Time. There is the mermaid queen, Gary, and they appear in episodes such as The Witches Garden and The Great Bird Man. Art is done by .

Sailor Moon On The Rocks

via deviantart.com (Kalisama) Sailor Moon, next to Pokémon, was my first introduction to anime. Not quite in the same manner as Pokémon, but Sailor Moon is still super popular for cosplay, reboots, and fanart. I can’t blame anyone too; Sailor Moon is a beautiful character to work with. Those iconic pigtails are made for art! Her as a mermaid is a cool idea too, because of the moon being a force that influences the ocean so much. Apparently there was a Mermaid Warrior in the Sailor Moon manga from a planet only mentioned that was called "Mermaid". We never get to see the Sailor Mermaid or her planet because they get devastated by an attack. Too bad, I’d love to meet Sailor Mermaid. Though if she wasn’t a mermaid, that would be disappointing. Art was done by .

Lapis Lazuli In Lapis Waves

Via: deviantart.com (veeleon) If anyone in Steven Universe would be a mermaid, it would be Lapis. No, not just because she’s blue. She has tons of water-based powers. She manipulates liquid, can generate water from her gem, forming water into constructs, can walk on water, can make water clones, can turn water to ice, and is able to form water bubbles to contain objects. If that’s not enough water for you, she even inspired Greg’s album cover for Water Witch! Her gem is even a teardrop shape, a water shape! She also flies around using wings made out of water. Lapis is a fan favorite too. It’s nice to see art of her being happy, since she’s usually grumpy, traumatized, or sad. I hope she gets some joy and peace by the end of the show. Art was done by .

Sea-benders

via: tumblr.com (IAHFY) Makes sense, Korra began her Avatar powers with very skilled waterbending. She was born and raised in the Water Tribe as well. She can make large walls of ice, water whips, water waves, and even launch herself high up and maintain herself on a waterspout. She joined the Fire Ferrets, referring to herself as a “top-notch waterbender.” Cool fact: waterbending motions in the Avatar series is based off of Tai Chi. This makes sense due to its fluid movements that are meant to move an attack away from you like water. Korra however makes waterbending way more aggressive due to her passionate and fire-like personality. She probably has enough knowledge and skill to bloodbend, though she has never used the outlawed skill. She would make a fantastic mermaid. made this Korra.

Do You Want To Build A Water-Man

via: deviantart.com (Vynndetta) You know...Elsa’s powers being under water would actually make the movie way more interesting. Freezing water would be an extreme danger to mermaid lives. The entire ocean’s eco-system would get wrecked by the dramatic change of temperature. Also her cape flowing in the water would be lovely animation. Half the fun of mermaids is how flowy their hair and tails are. Will Disney ever make more mermaid movies? Not like another sequel to The Little Mermaid, but animation has come so far since that movie, we should get more mermaid princesses. They missed their chance to have a mermaid with ice powers that would threaten the whole ocean and mermaid kingdom. But I’ve been ignoring Anna, she’d make a cute mermaid. Though what the heck would we do with Olaf? Art done by .

Misty Mermaids

via: deviantart.com (GigaMessy) Iconic water Pokémon Gym Leader, Misty has actually been a mermaid before. Not like a real mermaid but she has dressed as one for an underwater ballet. The episode was literally called The Misty Mermaid, a direct reference to The Little Mermaid. It’s the episode where Misty’s Seel evolves into dewgong. It was also the episode with that dumb joke, “a Starmie is born,” instead of “a star is born.” Though it was early in the series back when I was a child, mermaid Misty has stuck in our hearts and has produced tons of fanart such as this piece. It’s the closest we will get to a mermaid on the show, other than having a mermaid Pokémon like Primarina. I wish we'd get Team Rocket, the king and queen of cosplay, dressed as mermaids in this episode. This Misty was drawn by .

Dragon Mermaids

via: deviantart.com ( miss-lollyx-33) I am in love with the creative koi fish design. It pays homage to the Asian roots of Mulan. Also koi have a lot of Asian mythos connected to them such as The legend is about a Dragon Gate at the top of a waterfall on Yellow River. Koi swam up the river and would try to leap up the waterfall. Many would fail, but the ones that succeeded to jump up the waterfall would become a dragon. That koi legend suits Mulan, since it means that anyone able to overcome great challenges can become something great in the process. It would be cool to combine that legend with a mermaid koi. Mermaid dragons? That is something I want to see. Mermaid Mulan was made by

Face To Face With Greatness

via: deviantart.com (briannacherrygarcia) Perfect mermaid since she’s been staring at the water for as long as she can remember. Twist: they weren’t voyagers, they were mermaids. Then the water got too dangerous and filled with monsters so they had to become human and they never told their children that their ancestors were mermaids. Moana is perfection, but I want that mermaid story too. It actually makes a lot of sense to think that since Moana is breaking out from her land family to the sea and Ariel is breaking out from her sea family to the land. Both films were directed by the same guys too, Ron Clements and John Musker. Their villains are opposites too, with Moana’s turning out to be a friend and Ursula pretending to be a friend before she reveals that she’s evil. Art was done by .

Atlantean Water Goddess

via: deviantart.com (relsgrotto) This concept is a no-brainer since Kida is the princess of Atlantis. So many films and stories about Atlantis have mermaids, but not Disney’s. I mean, as a story-teller, you can easily have mermaids in Atlantis as a way for Atlanteans to adapt to their underwater home. I like how they’ve paid homage to the fact that she’s a warrior princess too with the spear. She also as a good mermaid personality: to be aggressive but also have respect for all creatures. I also like that her anklets have transferred to her mermaid tail. It’s still pretty crazy that she is definitely a princess but has yet to be included in the princess franchise that Disney has. It’s disappointing since I think she has one of the prettiest character designs out of the Disney princesses. Art was done by .

Black Spots

via: deviantart.com (Hogekys) Full disclosure, I have not watched more than one episode of Miraculous Ladybug. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t love the fanart. The fandom has come up with very beautiful visions that makes me wish I can get more into the show than I have. The fandom is so dedicated; there is actually a ton of mermaid alternate universe fanfiction out there. Are there any fish with black spots? No such fish came up in my research. I’d say the closest is a jewel cichlid but that’s more of orange with silver-bluish spots. Marinette has luck-based powers, that seems like something a mermaid would have that perhaps fisherman would hunt after. Isn’t her love interest a cat man? Don’t cats eat fish? We got something cooking here. Art is by .

Twilight Sparkle MerPony

via: deviantart.com (0Bluse) My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is a monster fandom and I mean that with respect. The fandom has everything. We got so many alternate universes that take any story and base it in Equestria. I’ve seen a popular Walking Dead web comic were Applejack is the main character. Basically what I’m saying is that this fandom has no breaks or limits. You want Twilight Sparkle as a human? Easy. Mermaid? Mermacorn? All of that is there for you. I personally prefer the mermacorns of the Tokidoki brand myself. Twilight Sparkle not only has many fandom forms, but a lot of canon forms. We got her as an allicorn, human, filly, and whatnot. You know what they need? Underwater Equestria world building with adorable seahorses. Art was done by .

Fish Possible

via: deviantart.com (FitzOblong) There is a lot of fanart of Kim with this specific kind of mermaid tail. Is she a dolphin or orca? In my option, those are the biggest jerks of the sea so I don’t know why they associated them with Kim. Dolphins attack and bully each other and orcas eat seals with automatically make them my enemy since all seals are my family. Why is Kim giving Ariel bedroom eyes? I’m very sure Kim is curious, so the look can make sense. Can we mermaidify the mole rat? He’d probably look like an ugly alien worm. Shego however would make a hot mermaid or sea witch. I’m still not over the orca or dolphin tail. Orcas are huge, so she’d be like a baby-orca mermaid? Mermaid Kim was made by .

Tangled Seaweed

via: deviantart.com (FERNL) Rapunzel may be one of my favorite Disney princesses to be a mermaid. Why? Her hair! It’s so long and will be so cool looking in the water. It would be everywhere! In reality, it would probably cause her a ton of problems. Fish would get caught in her hair; it’ll tangle in seaweed, and constantly be floating into her face. Oh god, what if her hair got caught is a boat engine?! In this alternate universe, Flynn Rider would definitely be a pirate. This is the first time I’ve seen a mermaid with a tattoo. Tattoos on mermaids are a neat idea. Though I think this tattoo is a little cliché and boring. I’d prefer her little chameleon friend as a tattoo or something that more refers to her mermaid life. Art was by .

Hinata By The Water

via: deviantart.com (vannavixen) Mermaids are shy and rare to see, so I think Hinata’s personality makes for a perfect classical mermaid. The kanji used to write her name translates to “place in the sun,” which is also super cute for a mermaid. Also I love those fin ear designs! Despite these qualities, she’s probably not suited for mermaid life since her least favorite foods are crabs and shrimp. She also has a hobby of pressing flowers, which could be translated into plants that grow on the seafloor? Maybe she can do something with coral. What is she holding anyway? Narurto is spying on her behind those rocks. It’s usually Hinata doing the chasing and spying. Being a mermaid would probably make spying and watching over him difficult without water. This art was made by .

Sailor Mercury Mermaid

via: deviantart.com (seiyachan) Like Korra, Mercury's attacks are mostly water and ice based, so her mermaid form feels pretty natural. I mean, her attacks have titles like “Shine Aqua Illusion.” Also some of her titles include "Soldier of Water and Intelligence" and "Soldier of Knowledge" under the guardianship of the "Planet of Water." Also just in case you are colorblind, she’s blue. Water is blue. Mermaids live in water. It’s like destiny or something. So what does the planet Mercury have to do with water? It’s all in how the kanji for the planet is written in Japanese. The word is “suisei.” The first kanji, “sui,” is the sign for water. The second, “sei,” uses the symbol for star. Kind of funny since Mercury is the planet closest to the sun, and thus is probably the driest. I think more of her powers connect to the Roman God of Mercury. Art was done by .

We re All Mad Underwater

via: deviantart.com (briannacherrygarcia) Child mermaids are so cute and they are what I am here for. This would be such a cute alternate universe. Instead of falling down a rabbit hole, mermaid Alice could have chased a lobster or crab into a hole in a coral reef. Well known characters like the Cheshire cat can be a seal. The Mad Hatter would be a crazy merman and the March Hare can be a narwhal (there has to be a narwhal somewhere!). Since the whole story plays on logic, the underwater world could have a whole new take on playing with logic. We can play with the elemental facts of vapor, ice, and bubbles. Oh my god, there would be so many bubbles. I also have to point out this Alice’s little starfish-like hair band is adorable. Mermaid Alice was made by .

Chibiusa

via: deviantart.com (0XsarachanX0) Speaking of cute kid mermaids! I’m joking; this child is really like 900 years old because Sailor Moon lore is epic like that. She looks five, but these Sailor Scouts are basically immortal time travelers. Mermaids can be seen as trickster characters, and Chibiusa is somewhat of a prankster. In my opinion, she’s also super girly and since mermaids and water are more of a girl’s symbol, she also fits the mermaid nature in that regard. Her dream is to grow up to be a pretty lady with a prince and be friends with everyone. That’s so freakin cute and innocent, it makes my head explode. Can she ever really achieve that dream if she’s immortal and looks like a five year old? I’m making it obvious that I haven’t watched all of Sailor Moon aren’t I? made this art.

Totally Mermaids

Via: tsug.net (Katira Moon) Totally Spies! is a blast from the past, all the way back to 2001! We got Sam, Alex, and Clover, three girls who work as undercover super agents. This fanart is specifically of Alex. This show has my respect because it was known as “risky” at the time for targeting a girl audience with content that most media entrepreneurs that was more suited for boys. Well, they were wrong! What made this show a risk was what made it successful as I know both girls and boys watched the show when I was a child. They even got video games and comic spin-offs. I remember the whole spy career got these girls to dress up a lot. It’s a wonder why dress up toys of them never became big. I am super sure that the show could’ve found an excuse for them to dress up as mermaids for an episode. Art is done by

Jessica Rabbit

via: deviantart.com (FERNL) Jessica is renowned as one of the most well-known symbols in cartoons. She also has that awesome quote, “I’m not bad. I’m just drawn that way.” Well today it’s, “I’m not a mermaid. I’m just drawn that way.” What I love about this character is that she’s married to Roger Rabbit. How does a woman like her end up with a loser goofball like Roger Rabbit? Her simple answer is, “He makes me laugh.” I love that despite her overly intense drawn self, she seeks a relationship built on humor more than shallow aspects like attractiveness. There has even been a head-canon that her character is less crazy due to her quotes about just being drawn a certain way and loving someone just for his humor. I love that head-canon! made mermaid Jessica Rabbit.
