What Needs to Happen in Netflix s Rumored Overwatch Series

Overwatch is a series with a LOT of characters; there's a few things a Netflix show would need to do to make sure the story doesn't fall apart. Recent Blizzard leaks have lent some credence to the rumors that . It makes sense; Overwatch was and still is a popular franchise that has plenty of characters with their own fan followings. However, it's also a series with a lot of characters, and it could be hard to focus on all of them equally. Any Netflix series is going to have to do a few things if they want to be successful.

Get Past Recall

Via: Blizzard The very first Overwatch short “Recall” ended with the tantalizing premise of a defunct Overwatch being restarted to bring hope to the world. Nearly every animated short, comic, and story that came after that gave backstory or “where are they now” updates on the different characters, of which there are, again, a lot. The only content that seemed to advance the recall plot was the short “Reunions,” where Jesse McCree activates a sexy iMac named Echo, which has something to do with Recall that we are never made aware of. THEGAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY The Overwatch Netflix series has to get past Recall, and fast. The show should either start post-Recall or have Recall happen at the end of the first episode. The Overwatch shorts are extremely accessible - even to casual viewers - so the show should do as little retreading of the same backstories as possible.

Give Sombra The Spotlight

Via: Blizzard Sombra has never been the most popular Overwatch character, but she is certainly the most dynamic. She is a member of the evil group Talon, but has other motivations beyond the organization and doesn’t seem to be fully bad, fighting against corrupt corporations in her free time. Both the short Infiltration and the comic Searching feature her in non-backstory plots. Technically, she’s the closest thing to a protagonist that the game has, even if she is a morally grey one. Also, she would be a great way to tie in characters that aren’t connected to the Overwatch Recall plot. She’s a member of Talon, so she is co-workers with central characters like Reaper and Widowmaker, but she also has ties to otherwise unrelated characters like Zarya. There are even hints that she is working to bring down the Vishkar Corporation, which ties her to Symmetra and Lúcio.

Sideline The Old Soldiers

Via: Blizzard Many characters in Overwatch are the leaders of the old organization. Characters like Soldier 76, Reaper, Ana, Torbjorn, and Reinhardt were some of the first generation of Overwatch members. They went their separate ways when Overwatch fell: into retirement, into vigilantism, or even into the evil organization Talon. As part of the Overwatch series moving forward from Recall, these characters should make way for a new generation. They shouldn’t be erased or forgotten, but their role should be in relation to the new members that make up the reformed Overwatch. Characters like Ana, Torbjorn, and Reinhardt can act as complex mentors to characters like Pharah, Bastion, and Brigitte. Other relationships can also be explored, like McCree’s relationship with his former commander turned Talon terrorist Reaper. This will let the next generation of Overwatch members grow and come into the roles that their predecessors filled.

Give The Junkers Comedic Shorts

Via: Blasting News Junkrat and Roadhog are a couple of great, funny characters with a lot of comedic potential. They also have no connection whatsoever to anything resembling a main plot or any other important characters. It would take a lot of maneuvering to get them into the story of an Overwatch Netflix series. To avoid wasting these characters, there should be a Junker short in each episode. It can either be at the beginning or middle of the episode. This would bring some wacky hijinks to each episode while not wasting the characters or having to awkwardly force them into the main plot. It might be hard to make a Netflix series out of , but it can be done. Hopefully Netflix does Overwatch justice.
