BEST — Portal 2

Valve has consistently delivered excellent sci-fi experiences, with Half-Life 2 arguably being the most important video game ever released. However, it terms of being a true sci-fi experience, Portal 2 takes the cake. It certainly helps that a charismatic antagonist like Wheatley serves as the beating heart of the game, contributing to a light-hearted tone that somehow doesn't feel out of place in this wildly entertaining title. Adding GLaDOS to the mix also doesn't hurt.

WORST — Aliens Colonial Marines

A game marketed using a pre-release trailer that was anything but truthful, the broken Aliens: Colonial Marines is an absolute travesty of a video game. The AI is perhaps the worst offender in this regard, featuring some of the dumbest enemies ever in gaming history. According to insider reports, the reason why the AI was so buggy was due to . This one typo broke the entire enemy AI, leading to some unintentionally hilarious moments in the game.

BEST — Deus Ex

When one talks about some of the most monumental games of all time, it goes without saying that Deus Ex would be a part of the conversation. This game and System Shock 2 helped propel the rise of immersive sims — a genre that has led to some great games. The sprawling plot of Deus Ex, coupled with unbelievably innovative gameplay — especially for its time — has helped this title etch its name as one of the greatest roleplaying experiences of all time.

WORST — Duke Nukem Forever

For all the time fans had to wait for another Duke Nukem game, the end result was an absolute mess. in gaming history, and that's not a statement made lightly. Muddy graphics, humor that should have remained in the '90s, and uninspired gameplay are just a few of the many problems in this title. Somehow, Duke Nukem Forever was stuck in development for fifteen years but had virtually nothing to show for it.

BEST — BioShock Infinite

It was hard to choose from one of , but the mention ended up going to BioShock Infinite at the end of the day. The modernized gameplay, intriguing cast of characters, and one of the greatest video game stories ever all contributed to the legendary status of BioShock Infinite. The Burial at Sea expansion is just the icing on the cake.

WORST — Bomberman Act Zero

Bomberman is supposed to be a cute little hellion that chucks bombs around to break bricks and clear levels. So, when Bomberman: Act Zero decided to completely wreck this established image of the titular character in favor of a bad boy persona, long-time fans were bound to raise their pitchforks. There was no reason for Bomberman to be set in a dystopian future with a more realistic look, especially when the gameplay was largely the same. If anything, the constant recycling of textures and poor collision detection turned the game into an absolute disaster.

BEST — Star Wars Knights Of The Old Republic

With the sheer number of entertainment avenues that has infiltrated, it should not be that surprising that one of the license's gaming titles would make this list. While the esteemed franchise has a slew of great video games under its belt, the best has to be Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic. KOTOR's story, along with a memorable cast of characters, was one of the major reasons why this game performed so well. One might argue that this RPG is one of the main reasons why BioWare's reputation completely shot through the roof.

WORST — Anthem

Fast-forward to 2020 and no one has any faith in BioWare when it comes to making good games anymore. The disaster that was Mass Effect: Andromeda is certainly worth a mention, but it pales in comparison to the ridiculousness of Anthem. The fact of the matter is that BioWare (and EA) essentially released an unfinished game, with little to nothing going for it. The icing on this tasteless cake came when BioWare decided to abandon its for Anthem, leading to thousands of gamers getting stuck with this lackluster purchase.

BEST — Mass Effect 2

To truly experience BioWare at the peak of its powers, then boot up Mass Effect 2 and play through one of the greatest sci-fi role-playing experiences of all time. Everything clicked when it came to Mass Effect 2. The story, characters, combat, and settings — nearly everything in the second game came together splendidly, as the sequel expertly expanded upon the foundations laid down by its predecessor.

WORST — E T The Extra-Terrestrial

There was no way a list of the worst sci-fi games of all time can avoid mentioning the title that was responsible for the infamous video game industry crash of 1983, almost killing off the entire industry before Nintendo revitalized the market with its brilliance. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial might not technically be the worst game on Atari's system, but its legacy cannot be dismissed. It is also a pretty bad game even removed from any context.
