Persona 5 10 Things That Make No Sense About Joker

The main character from Persona 5 is intriguing, but a lot of things about him and his backstory just make no sense whatsoever. has been revolutionary for the JRPG world. The Persona games introduce us to the real world, providing a of the games, and a fantasy realm with turn-based combat called the Metaverse. The clashing elements provide a ton of different gameplay styles all in the same game which mean that there's something for everything — and the protagonist is interesting too. Although you can choose his name, he generally has to be referred to as Joker since that's his alias in the Metaverse and the only constant name we have. Sure, he's intriguing, but there are a lot of things about this transfer student that simply don't make any sense and have us scratching our heads years after the game's release. Where Are His Parents This Whole Time

Joker starts off the game by being transferred to Shujin Academy, falsely accused of assault for intervening on an attack by a corrupt and powerful man. It's briefly mentioned that his parents agreed to the transfer to , but they're never mentioned against throughout the game. Don't they want to check on their son, see how he's doing? Even if they're strict parents who are disappointed in him, a text once in a while to check on his grades might be worth shooting off.

Why Did Sojiro Take Him In

It's mentioned that Sojiro knows his parents, vaguely, but they don't seem to be close — and yet, he was willing to take in this delinquent. The game makes some excuses for this, such as Sojiro relating to him, but he still seems an odd person to reach out to and ask if he can take in a criminal highschool student. Especially as Sojiro doesn't know that Joker is actually inncoent.

He Can t Break Up With Girls

Persona 5 has a ton of romance options, each of them with different personalities and advantages — and some with questionable morality. But if you decide to romance someone early in the game and then change your mind, you can't break up with them. Instead, Joker will be forced to stick with them or date someone else on the side. Or multiple other people. Essentially, he can cheat, but he can't do the honourable thing and dump someone.

He Has A Cat Sleeping In His Desk

The guy who sits behind Joker as he builds bombs in class and checks his phone every lesson really does him a solid by not telling the teacher — but perhaps the most curious thing is that he never brings up the cat snoozing very obviously in Joker's desk. Of course, we as the player know this cat is Morgana, a creature from the Metaverse convinced they were once human. But the guy behind has no idea, and doesn't seem to think there's anything fishy at all.

He Never Speaks

Persona is famous for its silent protagonists. You pick the dialogue whenever they speak (except for the occasional battle cry in combat), but otherwise, they are completely silent. Joker communicates mostly through gestures and comes across as extremely quiet. Although this is a quirk of the game series, it can often be distracting and make us less endeared to the main character. After all, other games who offer dialogue options still manage to give the main character a voice in cutscenes and such.

He Barely Replies In The Group Chat

Speaking of silent — the fact you have to pick the dialogue options means that he barely replies to the Phantom Thieves group chat. Or any texts, for that matter, making him a pretty bad friend. No one ever calls him out on this, though. Apparently it's just a quirk of Joker's to never actually bother answering his friends unless he's specifically going to go hang out with them. They never seem deterred by it, at least — the invites just keep coming.

Why Does Morgana Have Such Faith In Him

Morgana meets him in the Metaverse when he's with Ryuji (otherwise known as Skull) and while they instantly take a dislike to his friend, it seems that Morgana actually loves Joker. They offer words of encouragement throughout the game and seem to almost fawn over him whenever he does something impressive in battle. Since Morgana's crush seems to be on Ann, it's not attraction that gives them such faith — so what is it? Just a hunch?

He Really Does Not Seem To Question The Metaverse

Every character is a little shocked upon being told there is a parallel universe in which awful people have their own palaces. Everyone except Joker. Joker doesn't seem to have an issue with finding a strange app on his phone that teleports him to an unknown world. In fact, he settles into the idea quite quickly, as if he's always lived this life. A little more disbelief might have been realistic.

Why Is His Alias Joker

Some argue that the alias comes from the early Persona games as a bit of an Easter Egg, and some argue it's to do with the fool. But Joker just doesn't seem to suit such a serious guy, even if he is known as the Trickster in the Velvet Room. Sure, he has a bit of an audacious smirk whenever he does something rebellious, but otherwise he's actually pretty quiet and intense.

Why Are People Drawn To Him

Although the students of Shujin Academy start out wary of him due to him being on probation and being a problematic transfer, anyone who speaks to Joker seems to love him in the real world. His teacher comes around to him, the investigator starts to believe him, a journalist takes a liking to him, all of the Phantom Thieves respect him as leader — the list goes on and on. How is someone who never speaks and never answers any text messages giving off such a magnetic vibe? Impressive, Joker.
