There are a ton of Looter Shooters out there, some better than others. So here's a rundown of the best Looter Shooters out now. Although they come in many forms, looter shooters have always been popular. It's a genre that mixes the fast and frantic style of modern FPS games with RPG grinding for rewards and upgrades to encourage continued gameplay, and it always works. Who can argue that there's nothing better than taking down a particularly tough Skagg in or Raid Boss in Destiny 2, only to then see it drop a big pile of loot that's an exotic or legendary class? Plus, being able to mix and match weaponry, armor, and play styles across a wide variety of characters is what sells these games to a lot of people. They offer a massive amount of personalization that lets you feel like your character is your own. It's a subtle touch that really immerses you and draws you into the world. There are many different takes on the genre with the quality varying often quite drastically. It can take a lot of trial and error to find the gems amongst the hordes of trash, but most of them are cheap, so it's not a massive financial drain. The Ascent

It made quite the splash when it originally launched in 2021, but the Ascent by Neon Giant is a solid co-op shooter set in a Cyberpunk world. Mega corporations own everything and everyone, with most living inside giant towers on Veles. After a series of unfortunate events, you're tasked with ascending the tower to save your district from destruction. There's an absolute ton of customization options and weapon types to suit a number of different playstyles across some truly gorgeous and intricately detailed sci-fi dystopian levels. Available to play solo or co-op with a buddy, there's plenty of loot to grab, missions to complete, enemies to kill, and new allies to meet along the way. If you're looking for a challenging twin-stick shooter, this is worth checking out.

Lost Light

In a land that's been ravaged by an apocalypse, the desecrated ruins that remain have become a playground for all sorts of heavily armed survivors. Developed by NetEase Games, Lost Light is a free-to-play survival game that's got an absolute boatload of intricately designed weapons and lots of build variety to dig into. However, if you're cut down before you can evacuate to your bunker of safety you'll lose all your loot, so there's quite the challenge of risk versus reward for those that are daring enough. With cross-platform play available between mobile and PC players, Lost Light is quickly becoming one to watch.

The Cycle Frontier

Similar to Lost Light, but set in the far future above a strange alien planet, is a sci-fi looter shooter that had a bit of a rocky start, but has come into its own in the last few months. Set on an absolutely massive map where your goal is to scavenge what supplies and leftover equipment from past doomed expeditions have left behind. Prowling the planet are hostile creatures and other players that want what you have. There's a lot of loot to grab, plenty of grind to sink into and it's free-to-play, though there are microtransactions. But, there seems to be a bit of pushback from the Community towards some of the absurd pricing so hopefully that gets ironed out in the future. All in all, a solid shooter to lose a few hours in with some friends.

Roboquest

Though it may look like another cartoony looter shooter, Roboquest has a lot going for it. Developed by RyseUp Studios, this surprisingly fast-paced FPS keeps you on your toes as you tear around its numerous procedurally generated levels annihilating the armies of rogue machines. Upgrades for your character come at your base camp which you return to after every run and there are several different classes to choose from to cater to a range of different playstyles and approaches. With a ton of weapon variety, lots of loot to grab, a unique soundtrack banging away in the background, and the ability to bring along a partner through co-op Roboquest is an energetic Indie looter shooter that should be on more people's radars.

Revita

If twin-stick roguelite platforming games are your jam then Revita by BenStar is a game you should stick on your Steam Wishlist. This cutesy action-adventure game features what the dev calls "glass cannon gameplay" in that you can get very strong, but oh boy can you get killed fast. With an interesting story to follow, and an infinite range of combat encounters thanks to its procedurally generated levels, Revita promises an adventure that will never end. To keep things interesting there are plenty of powers to unlock, enemies to fight, and a great selection of accessibility options to tweak the game for all skill levels. The answers to what's going on lie within the ever-changing Clocktower, so start climbing.

Tiny Tina s Wonderlands

The latest in Gearboxes long-running Borderlands series, this savvy spin-off is a stand-alone follow-up to their popular Assault On Dragon Keep DLC that brings a fresh Dungeons and Dragons-inspired twist to their successful looter shooter formula. However, though there are plenty of guns and gear, there's more of a focus on spell-slinging and bizarre fantasy-based abilities that can turn you into a powerhouse of damage. With plenty of characters, a plethora of badass powers, and bad guys to plow through, it's easy to get lost in chasing down quests for hours. Plus, with a typically Gearbox approach to gameplay that has the "Zany Metre" cranked up to 11, Tiny Tina s Wonderlands is a solid stand-alone that's great either solo or with a party of friends that are looking to get loaded with loot.

Uragun

Strap yourself into a mech suit and take down hordes of hostel machines in Uragun from the team at Kool2Play. This Riftbreaker-Esque top-down shooter is a slick and futuristic little Early Access darling that's been making the rounds and garnering quite the appeal. In a world overrun by a corrupt AI, you play as a humble mech in search of its missing pilot in an increasingly challenging world. The levels are short, snappy, and well designed, the screen regularly gets filled with intense particle effects from firefights and there's a ton of unique and heavy-hitting weaponry to get your hands on. It's a simple and stylish shooter that's worth checking out if you're after some robotic apocalypse anarchy.

Last Group Out

If you're a fan of the tense thrills of Escape From Tarkov, then Last Group Out is the game for you. Developed by one man, Sean Griffiths, this cutesy pixelated indy gem is simple on the outside but surprisingly complicated and challenging once you start to break into it. Rounds don't last long and it's incredibly rewarding to burn through as you get closer and closer to a successful extraction with each new session. There is a ridiculous amount of pixelated customization on display. Everything from the stock, barrel, grip, sight, and more can be tweaked and changed to suit your style. Plus it doesn't stop at the guns as your character can get their hands on some pretty stylish and tactically efficient threads. Open for solo mode or a group of three, Last Group Out does quite a lot with very little.

Soundfall

Strap on a pair of headphones, bop to the killer beats of Soundfall, and blast apart hordes of minions and monsters as you fight to save the world of Symphonia. This musically themed dungeon crawler channels the rhythm-based action of Crypt Of The Necrodancer which rewards you for syncing your attacks with the soundtrack and the familiar view of rainbow-colored screen-clearing attacks of Diablo in a musical mix that's well designed and satisfying to play. There's an interesting story to keep you hooked and with the option for co-op both online or through split-screen, you're never short of options to keep you entertained. Plus, Soundfall has hundreds of banging tracks and the option to import your own playlist, so you can blow through ghouls to whatever beat you like.

Metal Mind

Take part in a machine revolution with a completely customizable bot in Metal Mind by Whirllaxy Studio. This perfectly pixelated mecha action game provides hard-as-nails rogue-lite gameplay and the ability to build a mechanical kill droid of your own choosing. There are tons of unique armor pieces and weapons to kit yourself out with, as well as heat, weight, and power mechanics that you'll need to balance to make the deadliest droid. There are some pretty wild builds to create, NPCs to meet, and bosses to reduce to scrap metal in seconds. It's a must-play for Mecha fans and its thumping soundtrack is guaranteed to keep you coming back.

Lost Ark

Developed by Smilegate RPG and pushed out the door by Amazon to a much more successful reception than their previous attempts, Lost Ark is a stylish RPG set in a vibrant fantasy world filled with giant monsters and impressively designed worlds. Featuring gameplay that's a cross between Diablo and the stylish set pieces of FFXIV, Lost Ark seems to be the new favorite for a lot of people. With screen-clearing sorcery, big meaty weapons that have slick Monster Hunter-esque animations, and one class that's pretty much Dante from Devil May Cry, Lost Ark has something for everyone. Although at launch the servers imploded from stress, if you can get online it's worth it, plus it's free to play.

Nightmare Reaper

If you're looking for an Early Access gem to try out then Nightmare Reaper is a classic FPS-inspired Indie worth your time. It takes the classic ultraviolence of the old games like Duke Nukem and Doom and turns it way up to 11 in a ridiculous and incredibly satisfying display of gore and solid gameplay. Developed by Blazing Bit Games, you're tasked with progressing through the cursed depth of the Nightmare Realm. An ever-shifting world filled with monsters that you can blast through with an assortment of unique and grisly weaponry. Collect coins in fun arcade minigames and use them to unlock new, more powerful upgrades and abilities. It's a meatgrinder of madness that's easy to pick up and has a solid challenge to keep you grinding away.

Gun Knight

Though not groundbreaking, if you're looking for a fun and free indie game to mess around with then Gun Knight is worth getting your eyes on. Highly reminiscent of Enter The Gungeon, this free-to-play roguelike has a surprisingly large arsonal to play around with. Though your starting pistol is pretty weak, you can quickly modify it to have a bigger kick, larger magazine, or even use homing bullets with unique upgrades found throughout the endless rooms. Available to download and play in a browser, Gun Knight is a simplified Looter Shooter () that's fun to kill time with, features solid gameplay, and has a large amount of depth for a free game.

Vault Raiders

A slick and super fast-paced shooter, Vault Raiders is a voxel-styled dungeon crawler that's top-down and features a massive sprawling labyrinth to explore. Numerous Underworld-inspired monsters backed by tough bosses block your path, but there's plenty of weaponry at your fingertips to clear out the hordes. Though only the first level is accessible () and the games running a Kickstarter, what's there is pretty interesting and a solid step in a good direction. Though whether it manages a final launch remains to be seen, Vault Raiders is a super fun and simple Indie Looter Shooter that's got a lot going for it with plenty of room left to grow.

Barbearian

If you tire of the constant cacophony of firearms, why not switch things up to a hack'n'slash style with Barbearian. Developed by Kimmo Lahtinen, Barbearian is a fast-paced, colorful isometric roguelike with an adorable art style and viscerally violent gameplay. Slice apart swarms of skeletons and marauding monsters as a buff bearskin wearing Barbarian across hundreds of randomly generated levels filled with loads of loot and experimental weaponry. Featuring huge boss monsters that can turn the screen in projectile-filled hellscapes and an army building mechanic to give you a bit of backup in a brawl, Barbearian is a beastly delight and a lovely loot-filled indie game worth trying out.

Necromunda Hired Gun

Taking a step into the fast-paced Doom-style arena is Streum On Studio with their 40k-themed FPS Necromunda Hired Gun. Set below the depths of a gigantic Hive City, you play a grizzled Bounty Hunter that's hunting down tough targets for credits and uncovering a dark conspiracy at the heart of the gangs in Necromunda's criminal underworld. The gameplay is incredibly quick and pretty brutal at times, but there's a lot of unique on display that fans of this iconic grim dark universe will love. From Bolters to Heavy Stubbers, Grav Guns, and even the classic Imperial Guardsmen Lasrifle, there's a lot of toys in this toy box with all sorts of fun stats available as drops, found in various chests or from taking down mini-bosses.

Vapormaze

Developed by Felipe Rodrigues, Vapormaze is set within a twisting and turning neon dreamscape filled with robots, spiked traps, and all sorts of diabolical machines looking to take you out. Featuring a roguelike style, each run on Vapormaze is different and can be completed in usually under an hour, so it's perfect for a quick dip-in-and-out session. There's a ton of colorful and cartoonish weapons that can be tweaked, upgraded, or replaced as you go and even if your run is cut short there are still ways to permanently enhance yourself for the next one. Another fun feature is that the bullets all have physics, so ricochet shots happen often and cause all sorts of chaos.

Endless Firepower

Swimming in the Indie seas is this simple and stylish shooter. Endless Firepower promises one thing, guns, lots of guns; and it certainly delivers. According to the developers, there are millions of procedurally generated guns in the game and they all have their own unique and bizarre models. With a style that's reminiscent of Borderlands, this fast-paced shooter keeps you on your toes as you skip around laser spewing bots and floating droids. Though it's still in early access, what's there is worth checking out if you're looking for something simple with a lot of variety to sink your time into.

Alien Shooter 2

Don't let its classic appearance fool you. Beneath its retro exterior beats the heart of a brutal isometric looter shooter from Sigma Team Inc, a group that was known for their "shooter" series back in the early 2000s. Considered their best title in the long-running series, Alien Shooter 2 is an arcade action game with strong RPG elements and an emphasis on looting your environment for better gear, weapons, and other items. Each area you can explore is absolutely massive in terms of scale and the gigantic swarming hordes of aliens you need to deal with are overwhelmingly excessive, but it's also satisfying to watch them get rendered into bloody chunks under hails of gunfire.

The Division 2

Science fiction or fantasy are common settings for most looter shooters, as it lets developers go crazy with item ideas. The Division 2 takes a different, more modern approach. Unlike other looter shooters on the market, The Division 2 uses grounded weapons from reality in a somewhat post-apocalyptic setting. It doesn't take away from the creativity of items, however. Specialist abilities allow players to use incredibly powerful weapons alongside the default skills they've selected. Items come with unique stats, set bonuses, and the game even includes PvP.
