With 22 games in the franchise (9 main series, 13 spin-offs), Metal Gear is a name that has become synonymous with stealth action, enormously complicated stories, political intrigue, and bosses that . But for those Metal Gear fans of a certain age, nothing quite compares to the original game that came out on the NES. Or, if you’re a REAL Metal Gear fan, the MSX2 gaming computer in Japan. North America never really saw the MSX2 console. Instead, we had the NES, the Atari, and later the Sega Master System. Although extremely popular in Japan even before the arrival of the Famicom (or Nintendo Entertainment System), the MSX2 was actually made by an American company: Microsoft. Metal Gear originally released for the MSX2 back in 1987 almost a year before it would arrive on the NES in North America. There are also quite a few differences between the NES and MSX2 versions of the game. While the NES quickly became far more popular worldwide than the MSX2, hardware limitations meant that the game’s soundtracks couldn’t be ported easily between the two systems, so they actually have different music. And now you can get both of them on vinyl. How cool is that? We can thank Mondo for the new vinyl pressings which sell for $20 each. The MSX2 version of Metal Gear is pressed to camouflage-colored vinyl, while the NES version gets a two-color split vinyl.
