Doom Slayers Collection Feels Like A Missed Opportunity
Bethesda has announced the Doom Slayer Collection for PS4 and Xbox One. A compilation of Doom 1, 2, 3, and 2016, it's got some weird omissions. Update: A few hours after posting this, Bethesda held a live stream that confirmed both Final Doom and John Romero's SIGIL would be coming to these Doom ports soon. You can is one of the greatest and most important first-person shooter franchises of all time. With a legacy spanning nearly 30 years, it's a game that everyone with even the faintest of interests in shooters needs to play. Sadly, the recently announced Doom Slayers Collection isn't the end-all-be-all compilation that many may have liked to see. Bethesda recently announced it would be bringing an almost (but not quite) complete collection of all the previous Doom titles to PS4 and Xbox One ahead of Doom Eternal's release next year. Containing Doom, Doom 2, Doom 3, and Doom (2016), it's a pretty solid deal at $30. You even get a coupon to save $10 on Eternal and a poster for the reboot. THEGAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY Where the deal starts to falter is with the contents of the physical edition. Should you opt to grab this at your favorite retailer, you'll only get Doom (2016) on the disc. The other three games will come as download codes for your console of choice. That's exceptionally lame, especially since the classic titles haven't seen a physical release since last-generation. This would have made more sense on previous consoles where game installations weren't mandatory. Doom (2016) is gigantic on PS4 and Xbox One -not to mention PC-, but you aren't freed from that install by going physical. With it accounting for roughly 75 GB, what's the point of even grabbing this? You're going to have to download everything anyway and it's not like you'll even have the classics in an easily accessible manner. It's also curious to note that a Switch port isn't being offered. That would have been a no-brainer for some since the Switch's unique portability makes for an excellent way to play Doom on the go. It's easily the best portable version of Doom, even if that GBA port is incredibly impressive. Furthermore, what about including Final Doom or Master Levels for Doom 2? Not even Doom 64? This really is just a placeholder release because Eternal happened to be delayed. I can't fault anyone grabbing this if they haven't previously experienced Doom (in any of its forms), but a lot more could have been done here. Source: ,
