Sephiroth is not just an iconic villain in the Final Fantasy series; he's also one of the most well-known villains in video game history. In any story, the villain often determines the quality. The better the villain, the better the story will turn out. is no exception to this rule, and many claim that the story which this game presents is in the franchise, if not all of video game history. Sephiroth makes a great villain because he has depth. He has conviction. Players witness his destructive path and the toll that it has on the world and the characters of the Final Fantasy 7 campaign. Sephiroth is one of the greatest examples of evil in the entire franchise, and here are the worst things he ever did. Most importantly, it received almost universal approval from fans. With more games in the remake franchise coming down the pipeline and numerous other Final Fantasy 7 properties on the horizon, we thought it a great time to revisit Sephiroth's worst actions. The mysterious ghostly figures revive him because he is not meant to be dead yet. The scene of his death somewhat mirrors . Even after beating Final Fantasy 7 Remake it is unclear exactly what is going on throughout the story. Is Sephiroth the architect of the changes happening during the title? If so, this could go down as one of the most sinister things he has ever done, which is saying a lot considering he tries to destroy the planet. Turning back time, changing history, and potentially even merging different dimensions is on par with playing God, which we all know never turns out good. Fights In The Wutai War
Crisis core sephiroth and zak showcases the end of the much talked about war with Wutai. As a member of SOLDIER,. In the original Final Fantasy 7 he is evil because of his intentions to use Meteor. In his past Sephiroth had no goals and no purpose; he simply did what Shinra asked of him. It is good to have something to fight for, but Sephiroth should have just made it a morally just cause. During the events of Final Fantasy 7, Sephiroth is unquestionably evil, but what about the events prior? Throughout the course of the main title and its spinoffs, many insights are given into Sephiroth’s career with SOLDIER prior to the game. If you didn’t know, SOLDIER is the elite military group which belongs to the Shinra Electric Power Company. and it becomes clear that their foot soldiers carry out some questionable acts in their name. and toward the top, players are eventually captured and imprisoned by the group. After a pause, the player party is released from captivity to find the building in shambles and almost every other person inside the building dead. Who else would have done this but Sephiroth? Apparently, he was none too fond of the experiments which had been done on him at the behest of the president, and he seeks to liberate the remains of his “mother” Jenova. In order to do this, he simply murders everyone in his path. Makes sense. Nibelheim
Speaking of the experiments, who could forget the massacre caused by Sephiroth when he learned the truth about his past? During a trip to Nibelheim to check on strange occurrences around a nearby Mako Reactor, Sephiroth begins researching a collection of books in the basement of the Shinra Manor. These books detail Professors Gast and Hojo’s experiments with the Jenova Project. Eventually, Sephiroth learns the truth of his magnificent abilities and descends into madness. Sephiroth’s first act as the villain we know in the game is to destroy Nibelheim and its residents. This event is known as the Nibelheim Incident, and it marks the transformation of Sephiroth from hero to villain in the eyes of many. Murdering Tifa s Father
This could be considered part of the Nibelheim Incident, but it’s truly a standalone event given some other factors which warrant independent consideration. When Sephiroth arrived in Nibelheim, . What she didn’t realize at the time was that her payment would be in the loss of the man who had raised her and was the closest person that she had in her life. While Nibelheim burns, Tifa is seen looking for her father, ultimately finding him dying outside the Mako Reactor at the hands of Sephiroth. This causes Tifa to declare her hatred for all the things Shinra has brought about. Sephiroth then tried to kill her as well for good measure. Cloud s Mental Breakdown
Speaking of the events at Nibelheim, when we first hear the they don’t match what we learn later on through the game. Why? Because the role Cloud recounts playing in these events was actually While Tifa should have arguably broken the news to Cloud sooner, she didn’t. Because of this, Sephiroth is able to reveal the news in a more manipulative manner later on in the game. When Cloud finally discovers that he possesses Sephiroth’s cells in his body, his mind destabilizes and the game takes a very unexpected series of turns. Killing Aerith
In Final Fantasy 7, Aerith is essentially the embodiment of good. She is portrayed in a sweet and pure way, leading players to build a strong connection to the character early on. That makes it much worse when she is murdered by Sephiroth. In truth, this act might be the worst Sephiroth committed. This isn’t only because of the victim; Sephiroth attempts to manipulate Cloud into doing it first. Given that Cloud is considered a Sephiroth clone, Sephiroth tries to make Cloud perform the act himself. When Cloud shows resistance, Sephiroth uses his super long Masamune to do what super long swords do – impale her. Meteor
Killing Aerith was horrible for obvious reasons, but it might not be the most evil act committed by Sephiroth. What could be worse? Killing everyone. In his first act of control over Cloud, Sephiroth forces Cloud to give him the Black Materia which can be used to summon Meteor – a giant meteor which will crash into the planet and destroy it. While Sephiroth successfully summons Meteor, the player party is able to , releasing the spell Holy which ultimately defeats Meteor and saves the planet. Sounds like a happy ending, right? Geostigma
Wrong. Turns out, death wasn’t enough to overcome Sephiroth. While he was completely defeated and thrown into the Lifestream during the finale of Final Fantasy 7, that wasn’t the end of the line. Fueled by hatred, Sephiroth refused to be completely dissolved into the Lifestream and used it as a vehicle to spread his essence. The resulting effect of this process is known as Geostigma. In the film Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children, we see Geostigma affecting the masses by means of skin sores and fatigue, with the dispersed Jenova cells ultimately killing many of its victims. Sephiroth’s goal had been to flood the Lifestream through this method in order to gain control of it. Haunting Cloud
As mentioned earlier, Cloud’s mind was shown in the main title to be especially susceptible to Sephiroth’s influence. While Cloud overcomes this at the end of the game in order to finally defeat Sephiroth, this isn’t the last time Cloud is forced to defend himself against the antagonist. Children and bystanders aren’t the only characters affected by Geostigma in Advent Children. It is revealed that Cloud also has the disease. Through his suffering, he isn’t quite as afflicted as many who are seen, but he still experiences visions of Sephiroth which encourage his reclusion in the film. Manipulating Kadaj
With the disappearance of Sephiroth, the main antagonists through most of Advent Children are the three brothers Kadaj, Loz, and Yazoo. In a similar fashion to Sephiroth in the main title, the three are depicted searching for Jenova cells, fanatically seeking to be reunited with their “mother.” Unbeknownst to them, they are being manipulated by Sephiroth from the Lifestream. This comes full circle when Sephiroth emerges from Kadaj’s body, taking over the vessel and transforming it into his own original form. Upon being defeated by Cloud, Sephiroth disappears, leaving Kadaj behind to die in his stead. This scene reveals that Kadaj was ultimately a tool used by Sephiroth, misled into seeking for more.
