Rocket League Leaves Lootboxes In The Dust
In early August, developer Psyonix announced that they would be removing paid loot boxes from Rocket League after being acquired by Epic Games. Via: rocketleague.com In early August, developer Psyonix announced that they would be removing paid loot boxes from after being acquired by . The developer has now what their formal plans are to replace the old system of randomized purchases, and most players should notice that the solution looks quite familiar. In December, the developers will apply an update that introduces their new system of acquiring cosmetic items, known as Blueprints. Following each match of Rocket League, there will be a chance to receive a Blueprint, which will replace Crates. Blueprints will clearly indicate what item it relates too, unlike Crates which contained a random item from a pre-determined table of offerings. These Blueprints will have the same attributes like Painted, Certified, and Special Edition. Once a Blueprint is in a player’s inventory, it will remain there and can be used at any point by paying real money to create the item. THEGAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY Via: rocketleague.com Apart from this new system to acquire items, Rocket League will also have an Item Shop added to its main menu. This looks to operate almost identically to Item Shop, shown below, where a rotating set of items will be available for purchase. These items range from new to older items, which they call Legacy Crate content. Items purchased in this way cannot be traded to other accounts and will remain bound to the purchasing player’s account. Via: forbes.com In the same way that Fortnite uses a premium currency known as V-Bucks to make purchases from the Item Shop, Rocket League will also have its own, known as Credits. These will replace the Keys currently used to open Crates. Finally, Tokens will remain separate from Credits and only obtainable from the Esports Shop. Any Keys that are unused when the patch goes live will be converted into Credits once logging into the game. The system looks to be a great addition to the game in distancing itself from the troublesome and controversial randomized loot boxes. By knowing exactly what one is purchasing and removing the element of chance, players can confidently shop in-game without resorting to the gambling-like mechanics that are constantly at the forefront of gaming and media discussion. Other companies are leaning hard in the opposite direction to attempt to normalize the inclusion of randomized loot boxes into their video games. is the most brazen and direct in this regard, firmly with a British parliamentary inquiry that has recommended that such mechanics be banned as they are targeted towards children. EA also has stated that these randomized mechanics are not gambling, but rather, “Surprise mechanics” that players love. It is not yet clear what will occur in the long run with these kinds of mechanics, but for now it is great to see some developers firmly embracing a more transparent method of monetizing their games, and moving away from randomized loot boxes.
