CHAMPS

PRESENTED BY Briana Day’s swat and scoop with just seconds left set in motion the go-ahead play for Syracuse as they defeated Boston College, 62-61, Wednesday, Jan. 27. On the following offensive possession, Syracuse senior Cornelia Fondren corralled an offensive board and drained a free throw with 1.9 seconds on the clock to break the tie seal a much needed ACC win for the Orange. "I'm just really happy for our kids," head coach Quentin Hillsman said. "Even though we had two tough games, losing at Notre Dame and losing to Louisville at home, and came back on one day's rest, it was just tremendous by our players. What can I say? We just turned around, came out, and played really hard tonight." CuseTV.com play-by-play voice Brian Higgins had the call: by Boston College (13-7, 1-6 ACC) took an 18-5 lead with 4:01 remaining in the opening quarter. Syracuse (15-6, 5-3) used a 10-0 run in the second to take its first lead of the game. The Orange would hold onto that lead until the Eagles' late charge in the fourth quarter.
Back-to-back lay-ups from Fasoula gave the Eagles a 59-58 edge with 3:31 remaining in regulation. On the very next possession, Syracuse redshirt junior guard Brittney Sykes made an old-fashioned 3-point play to put the Orange back ahead, 61-59. Fasoula converted another lay-up to tie it with 1:49 remaining to set the scene for the wild finish. Senior guard Brianna Butler finished with a team-high 22 points on the night, matching her season-best scoring effort. Sykes tallied 13 points, becoming the 25th player in program history to score 1,000 career points. Syracuse next plays at No. 17 Miami on Monday, Feb. 1.
