PRESENTED BY Welcome back, sports fans, to Throwback Thursday, a time to look upon our past with equal parts nostalgia, pride and a healthy dose of shame. For as casual style goes through awkward changes and redesigns so do football uniforms and logos. This week we take a look at the 1966 Florida Gators: The '66 edition of the Gators had an electric offense, led by QB Steve Spurrier, who won the Heisman that season. Florida averaged 24 points per game in a time of defense-dominated football. Florida went 8-2 in the regular season, suffering losses to arch-rivals Georgia and Miami, but the Gators would begin 1967 with a huge Orange Bowl win over No. 8 Georgia Tech. The 66 look involved a white helmet with a blue-outlined orange colored F on the side, a big difference from today's orange helmet with blue "Gators" script on the side. The jerseys had Indianapolis Colts-style shoulder stripes, which are harder to see in the above black-and-white picture. The Gators brought back these uniforms for a game in the 2006 season; the same season then-UF coach Urban Meyer won his first BCS National Championship. The white helmet has popped up from time to time since without the accompaning jersey, seen below modeled by another of Florida's Heisman-winners, Tim Tebow, in 2009. This season the Gators seem to be slowly grinding their way back to prominence; perhaps adding a little throwback magic could help Jim McElwain get Florida the rest of the way there.
