CHAMPS

PRESENTED BY After an impressive takedown of it shouldn’t come as a surprise that at No. 16. Not only did the Aggies knock around the Sun Devils in a 38-17 thrashing on Saturday, Texas A&M knocked ASU out of the Top 25 and into the land of “others receiving votes.” It also strengthened the case for the SEC West as the best division in college football. Much has been said about the Pac 12 South being stronger than the SEC West, which is home to Alabama, Auburn and LSU. That talk may die down after one of the West’s unranked teams took down one of the South’s ranked teams by three scores in the only Pac 12 South/SEC West matchup of the regular season. ASSOCIATED PRESS POLL • The Aggies don't have Johnny Football any more, but they’ve got quality talent, Kevin Sumlin’s mind and one of the only returning star quarterbacks in the SEC in Kyle Allen. Despite being switched in and out with freshman Kyler Murray from the second quarter on, Allen threw for 198 yards and two touchdowns and ran in a third score. Senior running back Tra Carson rushed for 96 yards and a touchdown and caught one of Allen’s scoring throws. Seven of eight teams in the Aggies' division are ranked in the Top 25, so they may be in and out of the poll throughout the year. The middle of the schedule includes games against No. 18 Arkansas, No. 25 Mississippi State, No. 2 Alabama and No. 17 Ole Miss. If they’re able to power through with one or two losses -- plus the ever-important SEC Championship -- they’ll punch their ticket to the playoff.
