CHAMPS

PRESENTED BY The women's soccer season kicked off over the weekend, but Texas Longhorns goalkeeper Abby Smith may have already produced the goal of the year. That's right--a goalkeeper has already scored one of the most impressive goals people will see all season. In the 61st minute, Smith punted the ball near the full length of the field from her own 18-yard line. The punt sailed through the air and took a bounce over the head of Miami's keeper, who was caught out of position. Goalkeepers tallying a goal is rare in the sport but this wasn't Smith's first career goal. It was her third goal at Texas, the second coming during her junior season from 45 yards out against Arizona State and the first during her sophomore season in Austin. However, the circumstances behind this goal made it more special. It was Smith's first game-winning goal as the Longhorns defeated the Hurricanes 1-0 in their season opener Sunday afternoon.
