Henry Cejudo criticizes Alexander Volkanovski s decision to serve as backup for UFC 280 lightweight title bout

Since announcing his retirement back in 2020, Cejudo has been quite vocal about returning to the octagon and pursuing a potential clash with UFC featherweight champion . 'Triple C' recently offered some advice to 'The Great,' who is expected to serve as a backup fighter for the upcoming vacant lightweight title fight between Islam Makhchaev and Charles Oliveira at UFC 280. According to Cejudo, Volkanovski should wait out for his shot instead of being an alternate fighter: "Alexander Volkanovski, No. 1, you’re going to get that second title shot. The UFC confirmed to you that you’re the next person in line to fight for the lightweight title. Why don’t you just wait?" Cejudo suspects that Charles Oliveira could be the one to pull out of this fight if anyone were to withdraw, meaning that it would lead to Makhachaev vs. Volkanovski. 'Triple C', however, believes that the Dagestani will be a bad matchup for the Australian: "Let’s say hypothetically, if you were to fight a guy like Islam Makhachev, that’s the worst matchup that you could have picked because Islam Makhachev, if you want to call him a 'one trick pony,' but that one trick pony of what he does, where you’ve never been while a guy with the power and the strength and the weight he’s going to have on top of you, it’s not a smart idea, Alexander." Henry Cejudo further explained that he would never offer to serve as a backup opponent for a fight because he takes his credentials and legacy "too serious." Cejudo also added that losing the No.1 pound-for-pound status is a huge risk for the Australian and that he should definitely take time to prepare for a move up to lightweight.
