PRESENTED BY TULSA, Okla. -- Oklahoma overcame windy conditions in the first round of the 24-team NCAA championships and leads the event with three rounds remaining. The four-day event is being played at the 6,194-yard, par-70 Tulsa Country Club. The Sooners, who led by nine shots at the turn, carded an 18-hole 8-over-par 288, three strokes better than second-place UCLA. No. 1 USC, No. 3 Duke and No. 6 Arizona State are tied for third place at 293 (+13), five shots behind OU. Alexandra Kaui fired a 2-under 68 to lead the Sooners, and is in fourth place in the 126-player field. Kaui, who recorded a team-high five birdies, was in first place at 4 under par through 14 holes but fell after recording a double bogey on the sixth hole (her 15th hole of the day). 2014 DI WOMEN'S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP Final Round: Maloof: Maloof: Round 3: Maloof: Maloof: Round 2: Maloof: Maloof: Round 1: Maloof: Maloof: Maloof: Maloof: How they got here: “A lot of my birdies were just based on placing myself in the correct spot on the course,” Kaui said. “The longest birdie I made was probably a 15-footer. Everything else was 15 feet and in.” OU senior Anne-Catherine Tanguay followed Kaui, tying for eighth place at 70 (E). Tanguay played 16 par-or-better holes on the round. Sooner Chirapat Jao-Javanil, the 2012 NCAA champion, logged a 72 (+2). The senior is tied for 13th place. Seniors Emily Collins and Kaitlyn Rohrback finished the day tied for 79th place. The duo each shot a 78 (+8). Big 12 Coach of the Year Veronique Drouin-Luttrell said her squad played well but can’t be satisfied with the day-one results. “We are used to the wind a little bit,” Drouin-Luttrell said. “For us it was a usual day. The last four holes were very tough on the front side. You want to play as well as you can, but some bogeys were going to be made. You have to move on because we have three more days to play.”
