Jackson State holds on to capture second consecutive SWAC title NCAA.com

PRESENTED BY NEW ORLEANS, La. - Jackson State won its second consecutive and 16th overall Southwestern Athletic Conference championship with a 9-8 victory against Alabama State on Sunday at MBL Youth Academy at Wesley Barrow Stadium. The Tigers and the Hornets squared off for the seventh time this season and while ASU held a 5-1 regular season edge, JSU held on to win the league crown. After five innings, the Hornets held a 6-5 advantage against the Tigers. JSU scored three runs to take an 8-6 lead and added an insurance run in the eighth to secure the victory. Desmond Russell (9-4) pitched five innings to pick up the win. He allowed six runs on 10 hits and struck out five batters. Alexander Juday got a two-inning save, giving up only one run on one hit with three strikeouts. Melvin Rodriguez and Charles Tillery each had three hits for the winners. Rodriguez scored a run and had two RBIs and Tillery scored two runs and had one RBI.
