Tanzo is shinobi who belongs to the Village Hidden in the Leaves. He was introduced in the series as a genin of the Hidden Leaf Village participating in the chunin exams as a member of Team Shibire.

Very little is known about his childhood and the information regarding Tanzo’s past, his heritage is still shrouded in mystery. Tanzo is a graduate of the Hidden Leaf Ninja Academy. He participated in the chunin exams along with Minoji and Shibire as Team Shibire.
He and the rest of his team successfully completed the first round of the Chunin Exams. Shibire and Minoji decided to check their scroll in the second phase of the exam while Tanzo was out hunting, and the contents (later revealed to be a high-ranking shinobi) knocked them out. Tanzo came back to discover them in this situation and they failed the test as a result of attempting to discover the scroll's contents.
In the anime, Tanzo along with his comrades appeared in InNaruto’s Footsteps: The Friends’ Paths. They once again participated in the Chunin Exams held by the Village Hidden in the Sand. In the first phase of the exam, they were supposed to pass where ShikamaruNara served as a proctor.
The squad was divided and seated in different rooms. They managed to qualify for the next phase by leaving the bonus question blank asking which teammate they would leave as a decoy. The bonus question was actually a trick question as all team members were required to qualify for the next phase.
Due to an unusually high number of young shinobi qualifying for the second phase, a preliminary round was arranged. In this phase, participants were tasked to race to the Hidden Sand and only the first 30 teams to arrive would have qualified for the second phase.
Unfortunately, Tanzo and his team failed to reach the finishing line in time and were disqualified from the chunin exams. Thus, Tanzo and his comrades once again failed to get promoted and become chunin.
After this incident, Tanzo has not appeared since and thus due to his lack of appearance, it has not been confirmed whether he is dead or alive. As of now, Tanzo is presumed to be alive and well until any information comes to light suggesting otherwise.
Due to the lack of appearance in the series and related information, almost nothing is known about Tanzo’s personality. From his status, it can be deduced that Tanzo is a quite responsible and reliable shinobi as he was handed the important task to hunt for food all on his own. He also seemed to be kind-hearted as he worried about the well-being of his comrades and rushed to their side as soon as he sensed something might have gone wrong.
Tanzo wears his Hidden Leaf forehead protector with blue straps around his neck that covers his chin, and has short black hair. Along with a pair of grey pants, he also sports a high-collared shirt that is split evenly between black and grey.
Using white bandages, he fastens his shuriken holster to his right leg. Additionally, he was seen sporting common black sandals.
Although Tanzo is a full-fledged Hidden Leaf genin, close to no information is available about the skills and abilities he possessed. As he had limited appearances in the series, he is never seen performing any of his techniques or abilities.
Despite this, it can be assumed that he possesses some useful skills as he graduated from the Ninja Academy and was qualified to participate in the chunin exams twice.
